STAGE 21 Race Report and Final Results 2013 Giro d'Italia

Sunday May 26, 2013
197 kilometers; from Riese Pio X to Brescia; Flat
Weather: mostly sunny, 20 c (68 f)

Vincenzo Nibali won the 2013 Giro d'Italia in Brescia today

Location of the final stage into Brescia

The peloton leaves the start and begins the last 197-km stage to the first ever race finish in Brescia. Vincenzo Nibali of the Kazakh Astana squad will be celebrating his supreme accomplishment as he brandishes the Maglia Rosa all the way to the final finish line.

*No one is in a hurry to escape today. After 40 kms under partly sunny skies, it is still gruppo compatto;

After route modifications as a result of all the horrendous weather the peloton faced…

...throughout this 96th edition of the Giro d’Italia, the entire three-week race course ends up at about 3200 kms in length. That’s about 250 kms shorter than the original planned route. After all the maddening weather-affected stages, even this flat, supposedly uneventful final stage has been altered for some reason as well.

The fans were denied the thrill of the two most challenging mountain stages that would have defined this race. Instead the defining character of this year’s race would have to be the weather. The riders endured a cold, rainy and snowy tour, for the most part. Many fell ill from the efforts expended in the foul weather.  168 riders out of the 207 who started the race in Naples on May 4th, have survived to this final stage. That number is about average, so it’s actually impressive considering the conditions.

Stage 21 Profile
Several top competitors did not reach the final stage. Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky was many people’s overall favorite for the race win. He retired from the race after stage 12 in the second week. The same day, another top favorite, last year’s winner Ryder Hesjedal of Team Garmin Sharp, also abandoned the race. Both riders had been losing time and pointed to illness as the reason for their going home.

Two riders were retired from the race as a result of returning positive doping controls—perhaps the ultimate insult to this proud and historied sport. Sylvain Georges of Ag2R and Danilo Di Luca of Vini Fantini-Selle Italia both left the race in disgrace. The 37-year-old “Killer”, Di Luca, had been riding surprisingly well until the 18th stage, before the revelation of a positive test for EPO from a test conducted a week before the start of the Giro. He had been clinging to the tattered remains of what was once a promising and successful career which included the overall win at the 2007 Giro d’Italia, and eight Giro stage wins total.  He won several important races and Classics in his prime, including the 2001 Giro di Lombardia, 2005 Amstel Gold and Fleche Wallone and the 2007 Liege-Bastogne-Liege. His small number of previous doping offenses and suspected doping offenses did little to dissuade him from trying to get away with “enhancing” his performance this year.

Back to the road, Omega Pharma controls the front of the peloton for their star sprinter, Mark Cavendish, who is looking to pick up intermediate sprint points on his way to a possible stage win after a flat but technical circuit finish.

The riders may have decided to ceremoniously stay together for the bulk of the stage.
After about two hours, Steven Cummings tries a break;
After about 20 minutes out front, Cummings is reeled in by the bunch.

km 137; Sirmione:
1st Intermediate Sprint: 1. Cavendish 2. Visconti 3. Andriato 4. Wurf 5. Ventoso 6. Ligthart

There was a lot of confusion at the second intermediate sprint, as no one really knew where it was. For some reason, today’s route has been altered, too. The riders were not very happy with the confusion there. Even this flat, sunny final stage is disorganized and causing confusion. For several kilometers Cavendish stayed at the front of the peloton attempting to take the sprint, but the line never arrived. Finally after about 6 kms, it appeared where it was originally plotted. Everyone had been handed a revised route for today which showed the 2nd INT coming about 5 or 6 kms earlier on the finishing circuit.

But after expending much unnecessary energy, Cav is able to take the sprint, and with it the lead in the Red Points Jersey competition.

-17 k; Brescia:
2nd INT: 1. Cavendish 2. Visconti 3. Herrada 4. Trentin 5. Vermote 6. Golas

Astana comes to the front to take over pace-setting from Omega;

Going into the final 8k, Orica Green Edge are challenging Omega at the front of the accelerating field. The sprinters’ teams are fighting for front positions going into the final sprint.

-4k: Onto the final lap, a lot of aggressive riding as riders jockey for good positions. The pace is high;

*Inside the final kilometer Cannondale put a couple of men on the front for Viviani;
The sprinters are crowding into the front of the bunch and their speed is already very high;
Cavendish is being challenged by Viviani as they open up their sprints a little early;
Closing in on the line it’s Viviani and Cavendish…
And Mark Cavendish takes his fifth win of this year’s Giro!
Sacha Modolo beat Viviani for second.

The rest of the field cross the line, and that is the end of the 2013 Giro d’Italia.
Don’t forget to come back and read my race wrap-up and conclusions!

Here are the final results:
