Stage 11 Time Trial Report and Results 2013 Tor De France ITT

33k ITT, mostly flat
Weather: Sunny, 25c

Mont Saint-Michel hosts the stage 11 ITT finish
The course is 20.5 miles long, or 33k. The intermediate split points are at km 9.5 and km 22.
182 riders will take the start today.

Svein Tuft set an early fast time at the second intermediate checkpoint of 25:35.
Tuft finishes with the currently fastest time of 38:04.

Two-time World TT Champion, Tony Martin is on the course. He sets a new fastest time at the 2nd INT of 24:42.
Jeremy Roy finishes at 38:12, currently second.

Thomas De Gendt comes in with a very good time of 37:30, and takes the lead from Tuft.

Stage 11 Profile
*Tony Martin comes in to the finish, and he has set the new best time at 36:29. That is an average speed of 54.271 kph. That will be the standard to beat for some time. Winds are picking up a bit, and may cause trouble for the later starters.

A report is in that spectators have thrown urine at Mark Cavendish on the course. That is shameful, despicable and dangerous. I hope they catch whoever had the tiny brain to conceive that assault. I know what their punishment should be, too.

Morons aside, let’s get back to the race:

The stage 11 ITT route
Jonathan Castroviejo is a rider I singled out for a good time today. He passes the first INT at km 9.5 with a time of 10:51. That is :30 slower than Martin’s time there.
Castroviejo is fifth at the 2nd INT. He finishes 1:52 off the pace.

Edvald Boasson Hagen would be a good prospect for this course, but Team Sky have been told to save energy for Froome in the stages ahead. This is always a consideration. With the next high mountain stage not coming until Sunday, I thought Boasson Hagen would have been set loose today, but I guess not. EBH comes in almost four minutes off the pace.

The current leaders are:
1.    Tony Martin 36:29
2.    Thomas De Gendt +1:01
3.    Svein Tuft 1:35
4.    Jeremy Roy 1:43
5.    Jonathan Castroviejo 1:52

Tom Dumoulin of Argos Shimano is fifth fastest at the 2nd INT.
Tejay Van Garderen seems to have rediscovered his strength. He is second fastest at the 1st INT, just 18 seconds slower than Martin.

They did not show it on TV, but Lars Boom’s time at the 1st INT is just :04 behind Tejay’s, tied with Svein Tuft, who is currently 3rd overall.

Today's favorite, Tony Martin set an early fast time
*Tom Dumoulin knocks Castroviejo out of fifth place with a very good time of 38:14.  I had him pegged for a good performance today.

Apparently Boom blew up in the second half of the course, finishing way down.
Van Gaderen is only 14th fastest at the second time check; he is losing ground.

Richie Porte, Chris Froome’s Sky lieutenant, is giving his all to the TT, despite Dave Brailsford’s orders to the team to lay off. Porte is an excellent TT rider of course, and is usually a legitimate candidate for a top time. Maybe Porte was the only other rider to get the OK to ride today. That seems absurd to me, since he is the one who needs to save the most energy for his leader—especially considering how he faltered on stage 9. He is the only one I would NOT allow to go for it today. But I don’t run the team. Oh well.

Ryder Hesjedal is riding a very poor TT.
Peter Velits finishes currently in tenth place.

Van Garderen comes in 28th.

Sylvain Chavanel is on the road. I expect a very good time from him on this course.
Some riders have reported that the course is harder than advertised. More undulations in the road in the first half forced Philippe Gilbert into the red, and he reported needing to recover in the middle after the early effort. But he also said a tailwind helped him toward the end.

The later starters will have the advantage of the earlier riders’ experiences on the course. They should know to save energy for the second half.

French TT Champ Sylvain Chavanel
Nicholas Roche seems to have improved on the second half, finishing 12th.
Chavanel is just seven seconds slower than Martin at the first INT.

Maxime Monfort is on the course now.
Porte is 4th at the 2nd INT, :54 off Martin’s time there.
Talansky is 10th at the 1st INT.

*Richie Porte finishes 1:20 slower than Tony Martin, and moves into third place.
Chavanel is fading in the last part of the course.
Mick Rogers and Cadel Evans are on the road.

The last part of the course is hurting some of the riders’ times now. That tailwind must have turned around.

Andy Schleck leaves the start house.
*Chavanel comes in at 38:07, 1:36 off the pace, and that is good enough for 5th place right now.

Evans is looking good at the first checkpoint.

*Andrew Talansky is in at 38:37, currently ninth best, 2:08 down.

Jean-Christophe Peraud is on the road.
Rogers is 14th best at the 1st INT.
Evans crosses the 2nd INT just 17th fastest; that is 1:41 off the best time.

Rui Costa is on the road.
Nairo Quintana starts his ride.
Peraud is riding very well.

Michal Kwiatkowski is third fastest at the first check point.
Dan Martin, and Alberto Contador are also on the course now.

Tony Martin’s time looks like it could hold up. Only Froome will probably challenge it.

*Schleck is not doing well. At the second checkpoint he is 134th, already 3:27 off the pace set by Tony Martin.

Purito is on the road.
Michael Rogers comes in 13th.
Kreuziger is on the road.

*Evans comes in at 38:59, 2:29 slower than Tony Martin, currently 14th.
Laurens Ten Dam takes the start for Belkin.
His Dutch teammate, Bauke Mollema starts. I am hoping to see a good time from Mollema. He is currently third overall.

Alejandro Valverde, currently second overall in the Tour, starts his time trial.

Here are the current TT standings at the top:
1.    Martin
2.    De Gendt
3.    Porte
4.    Tuft
5.    Chavanel
6.    Roy
7.    Dumoulin
8.    Castroviejo
9.    Talansky
10. Bak

Andy Schleck finishes with a time of 3 days and 7 hours.
Actually it’s 41:13, which is 4:43 slower than Martin, and outside the top 100.

Chris Froome rolls down the start ramp to defend his lead in the Tour De France. Everyone has started now.

Froome’s all black Pinarello bike looks great with yellow markings front and back, lining the top tube, and a yellow saddle. Sharp.

*Michal Kwiatkowski comes in 4th on the day, supplanting Svein Tuft; an excellent performance.
Ten Dam finished 27th.

Quintana is 2:20 off the pace at the second INT. He could lose the white jersey to Kwiatkowski today. That should continue to be a good battle. I would give Quintana the advantage in the Alps, and that could make the difference.

Contador is 11th fastest at the second INT, 1:23 off the time set by Martin.

*Chris Froome goes through the first split point 1 second faster than Tony Martin!
Can the current race leader maintain that pace to the finish? These guys are riding into more head wind at the finish than Tony Martin had to when he finished about three hours ago.

Laurens Ten Dam is 20th at the second check point.
His Belkin teammate Bauke Mollema cruises through in 11th, 1:23 off the pace. He is riding the same pace as Contador so far.

*Quintana finishes with a time of 39:57.0. 48th and almost 3 and-a-half minutes slower than Martin. It looks like he will be handing the young rider’s jersey over to Kwiatkowski today. Quintana should do better at the stage-17 TT.

*Contador finishes at 38:44, 11th place, tied on time with Lars Bak.

Race leader Chris Froome of Team Sky on the course

Froome comes up to the second time split, and crosses the line just 2.27 seconds faster than Tony Martin. His pace is just slightly faster than the reigning World TT Champion and German National TT Champ.

Ten Dam finishes just behind Cadel Evans’ time.
Mollema comes in 2:04 off Martin’s pace, which is good enough for 10th place right now. Not a bad ride.

Valverde comes in now giving it all he’s got. 38:41 at the finish. That is currently 12th and knocks Lars Bak down another notch.

Here comes the yellow jersey of Chris Froome. His pace has dropped! He crosses the finish line at 36:41, second place, eleven seconds slower than Tony Martin.

After four hours in the “hot seat”, Tony Martin has won the first individual time trial at the 2013 Tour De France! That is his second career TDF stage win (2011 ITT).

His victory looked threatened by Chris Froome’s times at the first two checkpoints, but Froome fell off a little in the end and finishes second.

More importantly for Froome, he has gained time on all his rivals. After the TT, no one is within three minutes of the Team Sky leader in the GC.

Valverde, Mollema, Contador and Kreuziger are all within 30 seconds of each other, but they are between three and four minutes behind Chris Froome.
I was kind of hoping someone would surprise and cut into Froome’s lead, but Team Sky look well poised to dominate another Tour. Froome’s foes can only hope that he falters in the Alps.

The World Champ flew through the course
