Stage 21 Report 2013 Tour De France Final Stage Results

134k from Versailles to Paris
Weather: sunny, 33c (92f)

Versailles
The riders left Versailles for the final stage of the 100th Tour De France under sunny skies. It is shaping up to be the hottest day of the Tour.  By the time they finish, the skies will have darkened, as the race concludes with its first ever twilight finish.

Hundreds of ex-Tour riders will be on hand for the celebrations at the end. 170 riders will celebrate finishing the 2013 Tour De France after three weeks of intense competition on the roads of France.

Chris Froome will officially solidify his win when he crosses the finish line on the Champs-Élysées, and he will earn Team Sky its second consecutive Tour victory. The Kenyan-born talent who rides for Dave Brailsford’s British team asserted his will all over the race, and finishes with an indisputable five-minute win over second place Nairo Quintana of Team Movistar.

Stage 21 profile

All the jerseys have been decided. Peter Sagan coasts into Paris with the green sprinter’s jersey. The young Slovakian speedster was diligent in both the finish sprints and the intermediate sprints, which have become more significant with the changes in the points system. He also rides into Paris with a green dyed goatee.  Read on...

Stage 21 route into Paris
Nairo Quintana won both the king of the mountains and young rider’s competitions. The newest Colombian hero is drawing comparisons to Lucho Herrera, who was the first Colombian to win a stage at the Tour De France. Herrera won stage 17 of the 1984 Tour on top of Alpe d’Huez, and was just the second rider to win the king of the mountains jersey in all three Grand Tours. Quintana wears the polka dots into Paris, while second place young rider, Andrew Talansky, dons the white jersey temporarily.

Purito tries to light a celebratory cigar as he pedals through the course. The wind is preventing him from enjoying a taste of his namesake. Froome is enjoying a glass of champagne while the cameras soak up the scene.

75k to go: The peloton is cruising along the banks of the Seine. They are nearing the beginning of the ten laps on the Champs-Élysées. Each lap is 7k and will be lined with tens of thousands of spectators who have come out to see the show.

They are on the Rue de Rivoli now, passing the Tuileries and the bend around the Fontaine de Mers, the Fontaine des Fleuves, and the Obelisk of Luxor that inhabit the Place de la Concorde. The road delivers them to the Champs-Élysées for the final ten-lap circuit to the finish.

Quintana and Froome share a Purito with Purito

The riders reach the Arc De Triomphe and circle the historic monument for the first time. The first time ever, in fact, because they have usually turned around right in front of the Arc. This 100th special edition has introduced a few changes and additions to season the race with special flavor.

The sun is settling low in the sky with a bright orange glow that floods all the way down the famed finish straight.

57k to go: riders are starting to stretch their legs in the front of the peloton. The pace goes up, and some riders are now struggling to hang on to the back of the pack. Here come the first attacks.

Cavendish punctures up by the Arc de Triomphe. He chases hard to catch back on to the peloton.

The sight of the strung out peloton circling the Arc de Triomphe is a beautiful thing. It should be fun to see all the plans they have for the darkness later. I, for one, can hardly wait to see Froome’s fluorescent yellow sequins flash down the road.

Toward triumph
-47k: Juan Antonio Flecha and David Millar are off the front.
-40k: Millar and Flecha have a :15 lead.

*39k from the finish of the 21-stage race, Lieuwe Westra of Vacansoleil has been forced to abandon the race. No report on why, however. What a shame to make it all the way around France for three weeks and miss the finish by just a few easy kilometers.

5 laps to go: Millar and Flecha are still off the front.
-34.6k: Astana’s Dmitriy Muravyev jumps off the front of the pack.

*David Millar has gone away alone and dropped Flecha.
4laps to go: Millar holds a lead of :27 over the peloton.

3 laps to go: Jeremy Roy escapes the peloton. He is chasing after Millar, who holds a :20 lead.

*-19.5k: Roy blows right on past Millar.

A few others are jumping out now. They are Manuel Quinziato, Bram Tankink, and Alejandro Valverde.

*Millar is swallowed up by the peloton.
Mori punctures.
Vichot punctures.

I missed it, but Roy must have been picked up by the peloton.

-16.5k: Omega Pharma and Argos Shimano are pushing the pace at the front of the peloton. They trail the Valverde group by :15.

-15k: The sprinters’ teams are starting to organize at the front.
2 laps to go: Vichot punctures again!

*Valverde, Quinziato and Tankink have a gap of :20.

The light is fading into magic hour.

Kenyans celebrating Froome's Victory
*1 lap to go in the 2013 Tour De France!
The riders pass the bell ringing to signify the last lap. As they go over the line, the 3 leaders are reeled in. Gruppo compatto.

Greipel punctures!

Roelandts drops back to help his Lotto Belisol teammate, Greipel. The big German will absolutely want to get back into the mix for the final bunch sprint. He only has a few thousand meters left to do so.

A red convertible sports car goes by with some illustrious VIPs. Multi-Tour champions “the cannibal”, Eddie Merckx, Bernard Hinault, “the badger”, “Big Mig”, Miguel Indurain—five-time winners all—and three-time winner, “L’Americain”, Greg Lemond.

3k to go.
Cannondale, Lotto, Omega Pharma, Argos Shimano, and Saxo Tinkoff are among the teams racing to get their men into the front positions.

*Cavendish’s OPQ train takes the lead with 1.5k to go.  Sagan gets on Cav’s wheel.
They are under the red flag, 1k to go. The top sprinters will all want to be in front as they go around the final right hand bend into the finishing straight.

*Kittel revs up first, ahead of Greipel and then Cavendish.
Kittel is in full sprint, with Greipel speeding just behind, and then Cav.

Big André Greipel is out of the saddle, punishing his pedals. He is up to full speed as he comes up on Kittel’s left side.

Mark Cavendish is also punching away at the pedals, working from behind Kittel to the right. He throws everything he’s got into a final push…

Marcel Kittel has gone into overdrive.
The three sprinters are practically neck and neck as they approach the finish line, Kittel just a nose aghead..

Cav tries to get an extra pedal stroke out of a single revolution, and his rear wheel bounces into the air momentarily.

They throw their bikes at the line in unison.

Marcel Kittel has nosed out the final stage win at the 2013 Tour De France!
That is the German sprinter’s fourth stage win of the Tour. More than anyone else this year.

The Sky Team coast up to the line riding all abreast, and all smiles as they celebrate a very impressive Tour victory for their leader, Chris Froome.

Here are the full stage-21 Results. Tomorrow I will post a race review and wrap up, with assessments and commentary. Hope you enjoyed the race!
