Stage 17 Individual Time Trial Report and Results 2013 TDF

[add final kms gfx]

32k Individual Time Trial
From Embrun to Chorges
Climbing
Weather: Rain is forecast for later on; early starters have dry roads.

The stage 17 ITT route
The earlier starters could have a distinct advantage over the later starters. Rain later in the day will force the top GC contenders (who start the course last) to exercise added caution on the descents, and could potentially set somewhat slower times.

Gorka Izagirre of Team Euskaltel did not take the start today.

I have not heard word if Alberto Contador and Nairo Quintana have made peace after their “misunderstanding” yesterday before the finish in Gap. Contador crashed on the descent a few kilometers before the finish (also delaying Chris Froome), and when he and Froome caught back up with the elite group they had been riding with, el pistolero gave the young Quintana a sarcastic thumbs up.

Contador was said to have intended the sarcasm because Quintana had attacked while Contador and the yellow jersey were down. Quintana said he did not attack when Contador went down, but just continued his pace, as he was thinking about putting time into his white jersey rival, Michal Kwiatkowski of Omega Pharma-Quickstep. The difference of opinion came after Contador and Quintana--two riders from different teams--were said to be cooperating to keep Froome from riding away with the race win like Bradley Wiggins did last year.

*Jean-Christophe Peraud of Ag2R crashed on the course this morning during a recon ride. The highest placed Frenchman in the race landed hard on his shoulder, but will take the start today anyway.  They are reporting that his shoulder is fractured. Peraud is a very good climber and is excellent against the clock—particularly on hillier courses. He will do his best to defend his ninth place overall today, while riding hurt. Bad luck for Peraud, and for his team, Ag2R, and for France.

Stage 17 time trial profile

Several riders will opt for a bike change somewhere on the course today. The irregular profile will sometimes favor a TT bike, and sometimes favor a road bike. The riders will have chosen their optimal bike-change location ahead of time. It will be interesting to see who swaps where.

TO THE ACTION:

*Time trial specialist, Lieuwe Westra of Vacansoleil sets an early best time of 54:02 over the 32k hilly course. His teammate Thomas De Gendt, who finished third in the flatter stage-11 time trial, sits in second place, twelve seconds behind Westra.

*Tony Martin, who won the stage-11 TT, lost a few seconds to a slow bike change. The World Time Trial Champion finished with a time of 54:39, slower than Westra by :37.

Here are the current top five leaders on today’s stage:
1.    Westra 54:02
2.    De Gendt +:12
3.    De Marchi +:13
4.    T. Martin _:37
5.    Moser +51

Rein Taaramae of Cofidis comes in one second faster than De Gendt, and takes over second place.

The first half of the course has the riders racing along the beautiful manmade Lake Serre-Ponçon. It makes for a nice scenic ride, though the riders probably are not noticing the scenery today.

*Jon Izagirre of Euskaltel set faster times than Westra at the time checks. He comes in with a finish time of 53:58, and takes over the lead.

Tejay Van Garderen (BMC) set the third fastest time at the first time check.
TVG seems to be pacing himself very well, as he rolls through the second time check with the fastest time. He then switches his road bike for a TT bike and continues on.

The sky has been darkening as charcoal masses of rainclouds advance toward the course. A curtain of dense rainfall can be seen in the distance. The top placed riders who will start last will have to balance a competitive ride with cautious restraint as they race against the clock and try to stay upright on wet roads.

Arnold Jeannesson of FDJ sets the second fastest time at the first INT.

*As if on cue, the skies open up torrents over the middle of the race route. The road becomes dotted with dark drops, and is then quickly coated and soaked. Izagirre’s chances at holding a high spot just improved.

Dan Martin skirting Lake Serre-Ponçon
*Tejay Van Garderen crosses the finish line before the rain gets there. He takes over the lead with a new fastest time of 53:24. He has beaten Izagirre’s time by 34 seconds.

Jeannesson is riding under a heavy downpour. The first wetting has made the road slick and sketchy. Jeannesson’s rear wheel starts to slide out on the sharp turns, and he has to slow down to navigate the technical route.

Yesterday’s stage winner, Rui Costa of Movistar, sets out on the road.
Cadel Evans takes the start. It is still dry at the start.

Andy Schleck has the fifth fastest time at the first time check.
*Alejandro Valverde sets the new fastest time at the first INT.

Jean-Christophe Peraud takes the start with his injured shoulder from this morning’s crash. Apparently he is planning to decide how he is feeling after the first climb. Abandoning the race is a distinct possibility. It’s a shame because I had him as one of the favorites for today’s time trial.

Astana’s Jakob Fuglsang is now on the road.

Andrew Talansky passes the 1st INT with the third fastest time, 18 seconds slower than Valverde, and ten seconds faster than Izagirre.

Schleck is seventh at the second time check.
Nairo Quintana takes the start in the white jersey of the best young rider in the race.

At the second time check, Euskaltel climber Mikel Nieve is 90 seconds off the leading pace.

*Pedaling at an average speed of almost 31 kph, Alejandro Valverde sets the fastest pace at the second time check, almost a full minute faster than Van Garderen’s previously fastest time!

Now Joaquim Rodriguez beats Valverde’s time at the 1st INT by 3 seconds. Never a great chrono rider, Purito has here a fairly friendly course for his abilities.

Kreuziger and Contador have started.
Andy Schleck finishes with the new third best time, 54:00, just :35 off Van Garderen’s pace (that is being shattered right now by Alejandro Valverde).

Every rider has started. Mollema and Froome, riding second and first place overall, respectively, are the last to roll down the start ramp. The elite are all on the road right now. Who will benefit, and who will suffer at the end of this time trial?

Talansky is doing a good ride, fifth at the first check point.

Alberto Contador leaving the start house
Contador and Kreuziger, both of Saxo-Tinkoff, will be hoping to better the time of Belkin’s Bauke Mollema, and take over the second and third podium spots in the overall classification. Mollema told the press yesterday that he was confident about a good result today.

*Alejandro Valverde finishes with a smoking-fast time of 52:03. He has smashed Tejay’s time by 1:21, and takes over a commanding lead in the ITT. Valverde is immediately enveloped by reporters. The Team Movistar rider is the first to come in under 53 minutes, and he does it by a long shot. His will be the time to beat from now until the final finishers come in.

Michal Kwiatkowski of OPQ sets the 3rd best time at the 2nd INT.

Profile of the final 5k to the finish
Mollema is not exactly tearing up the course; at the first check he is 19th fastest, and over a minute slower than Contador. It looks likely that Mollema will lose his second place, and possibly end up fourth overall at the end of the day.

Roman Kreuziger has tied Valverde’s time at the first INT, but his team leader, Contador, has set the new fastest time at that check, :20 faster than Valverde and Kreuziger. The Saxo riders will both have to crack and Mollema will have to significantly improve over the second half of the course in order for him to keep a podium position today. His teammate, Laurens Ten Dam had to slow down and help pull Mollema up the last mountaintop finish on Mont Ventoux. With more big mountains ahead, Bauke Mollema may be waving goodbye to the podium once and for all today.

Many riders are swapping their bike right after a left hand bend that immediately follows the second intermediate checkpoint.

Chris Froome is the last man to pass the 1st checkpoint. At 14:42, he is just two seconds off of the fastest time set by Alberto Contador just a few minutes ago. The stage win should be a good race right till the end, but Chris Froome will not have to worry about anyone taking much time out of his overall race lead today.

Peraud is 13th at the second INT.

Here comes Andrew Talansky up to the finish line. He is gritting his teeth, leaving everything on the road here in the finale. He crosses the line at 53:14. That is 1:10 slower than the fastest time set by Valverde, but good enough for second place. Great ride from the young American star.

Jakob Fuglsang is third fastest at the second INT, exactly one minute off the pace. He swaps his bike at the popular spot on the next bend.

*Purito hits the 2nd INT with the fastest time so far! He crosses at 38:30.57. That is 17.51 seconds faster than Valverde’s blistering time. This could be Rodriguez’s best time trial of his career. The last part of the course won’t suit him as well as the first two-thirds, but he still may be able to hold on to a spectacular result. He had chosen an earlier point on the climb to swap his bike, so he flies right through the bend near the top of the second climb, where most seem to have chosen to execute the swap.

Mick Rogers comes in with the fifth fastest time at the finish.

Now Kwiatkowski comes up. The young rider from Omega Pharma-Quickstep finishes with the new second fastest time. The Polish National Road Champion would love to get a top ten finish in his first Tour De France.

Ten Dam is 11th fastest at the second INT.
The sun is starting to peek out.

Quintana is third fastest at the 2nd INT. He makes a fast bike change and is off to try and preserve, if not improve on, his fifth place overall.

Kreuziger hits the 2nd INT with the second fastest time, just 3 seconds slower than J-Rod. It is likely that the next two riders to cross that mark will set the two fastest times, and dislodge the others.

*Bad news is delivered that Peraud has crashed on the final descent, landing again on his fractured collarbone. France’s best hope for a high result is crumbling. I will be impressed if he continues on in the race.

Fuglsang finishes with the third fastest time. Great ride.
Not counting today’s tarmac magnet, Peraud, it seems every rider near the top of the overall standings is delivering the impressive performance I was expecting—except for Bauke Mollema. The Dutchman looks like he jinxed himself with the bold talk before the TT. He and Peraud are shaping up to be the big losers of the day.

*Third-place overall Alberto Contador sets the new fastest time at the 2nd INT. He is six seconds to the better of Purito’s time. He rolls right through “bike-swap bend” without a bike change. He must have decided that the time lost by a bike change is not worth the potential time saved with a TT bike.

*Purito comes up to the finish punching away at the pedals. Joaquim Rodriguez sets the new fastest time at 51:43! He is the first to beat the 52-minute mark. His lead is 20 seconds to Valverde right now, with six riders yet to finish. That is the best TT I have ever seen the diminutive Spaniard ride.

The current standings with six riders still on the road:
1.    J-Rod 51:43
2.    Valverde +:20
3.    Kwiatkowski +1:23
4.    Fuglsang +1:24
5.    Talansky +1:31

*Mollema is just 16th best at the 2nd INT, 1:53 off the pace.

Chris Froome out on the TT course
The yellow jersey of Chris Froome approaches the 2nd INT. Team Sky have chosen a unique spot on the incline, about 50 meters before the INT line, to execute Froome’s bike swap. His split time will not reflect his actual pace, since he took time out for the bike change before the time check. So his split time is 4th fastest, but he probably actually has a very slight lead over the fastest time set by Contador.

Laurens Ten Dam comes up to the finish 2:18 off the pace. A pretty good ride for The Dutch Belkin rider, currently 11th.

Light raindrops are falling again.
Nairo Quintana, the best young rider at the Tour, finishes his time trial with a time of 52:44. That is 1:00 slower than J-Rod, but currently third fastest. The young Colombian from Boyacá in the Eastern Andes pushes Kwiatkowski down to fourth, and pads his lead in the white jersey competition by 19 seconds.

Roman Kreuziger comes home for Saxo. He’s got the second fastest time at the finish, just 12 seconds behind Purito.

With Mollema struggling, it is just down to Contador and Froome now.
The Spaniard and the adopted Brit are in a tight race.

*Alberto Contador races up to the finish line and just barely sets the new fastest time on the course. Call it one second faster than Rodriguez. Chris Froome knows what he has to beat now.

Chris Froome has ridden right into a new storm shower. That could make a difference in a game of fractions of a second, and it causes new slickness on the technical descent as well.
Froome seems to be taking care on the hairpin bends now. 3k left to ride for the yellow jersey wearer.

*Bauke Mollema crashes into the barrier on the same tight bend where Peraud crashed. He came into the corner very fast.
Mollema finishes the TT in 10th place, 2:00 off the current best time. Not an absolute catastrophe, but the Belkin rider will lose his podium position.

*Chris Froome, the last man on the course, is cruising up to the finish line, both pistons firing in fast rhythm. The Team Sky leader crosses the line at 51:33.
Big Chris “Vroom” wins the stage 18 time trial! He beats Alberto Contador by nine seconds. Joaquim Rodriguez will be third at +:10.

That is Froome’s third stage win of this Tour. He increases his lead over all his rivals once again. He has won the first two mountaintop finishes, and another is on the menu tomorrow.

Can anyone compete with this man’s abilities? Only a serious bonk in the mountains can prevent Froome from winning the 2013 Tour De France now. He claims he was surprised to have won the stage today. He might be the only one who was.

Jean-Christophe Peraud of Ag2R, who was riding in ninth place overall coming into today’s time trial, has abandoned the Tour De France after crashing twice and fracturing his right clavicle.

The next three stages will be extremely challenging, and could shake up the standings more before the race reaches Paris on Sunday. It will be interesting to see if the teams who have two riders high up in the standings will be able to preserve both riders’ positions.

Team Saxo-Tinkoff has Contador in second place, and Kreuziger in third overall. Belkin has Mollema in fourth place, and Ten Dam in seventh. Garmin-Sharp has Dan Martin in tenth place right now, and Talansky in thirteenth. Several riders have a reasonable shot to vie for a top ten finish in Paris, so Garmin will want to try and preserve—or improve--both riders’ positions as long as possible.

Unless someone severely cracks in the mountains, it is looking to me like the top ten in Paris are going to come from the current top 15. Andy Schleck, in 16th place now, trails his teammate, 15th place Maxime Monfort, by 6:30, and 14th place Daniel Navarro of Cofidis by almost seven minutes. Monfort, in 15th trails Chris Froome’s lead by over seventeen minutes, so it is not looking promising for anyone outside of the top 15 to come close to a top ten finish on GC.
