Stage 19 Report and Results 2013 Tour De France

Stage 19 from Bourg-D’Oisans to Le Grand-Bornand
204.5k; High mountains;
Weather: cloudy, 18c (65f), rain is expected. Up in the mountains it is closer to 10c (50f).

Christophe Riblon gives France a reason to celebrate
Christophe Riblon of Ag2R did France a favor by winning the Queen Stage to Alpe d’Huez yesterday for his home country. France had been wanting for some results this Tour, and got a good one on stage 18 as Riblon paced himself perfectly, and won from an early breakaway. Can another break succeed today on stage 19 to Le Grand-Bornand? Will Riblon go after the polka dot jersey?

Chris Froome was docked 20 seconds for that illegal feed yesterday toward the end of the stage. Feeding was allowed only up until 6k from the finish line. Richie Porte took food from the team car and gave some to Froome inside 5k to go. He was also penalized. Froome, Porte, and their sports director Nicolas Portal all received fines for the infraction. Froome said he had not been able to take on food at the bottom of the final climb up Alpe d’Huez because their team car had experienced mechanical trouble.

Stage 19 on the map
Today the riders have 5 more categorized climbs to conquer before a 13k descent to the finish..
Glandon: The first mountain is really three climbs in one. The Hors Categorie Col du Glandon is 21.6k long averaging 5.1%. The first part climbs for about 6 kilometers to 1276 meters, then a short downhill section gives a little respite before the second, long section. The second part starts out very steep, climbs about 8.5k to 1790 meters, before another 1.5k downhill recovery point. The third section climbs for about 3k up to the summit at 1924 meters of elevation. Each part has some very steep sections. The 5.1% average gradient of the entire climb takes into account the downhill sections as well as the climbing, so it is deceptive. The mountain is long, steep and challenging.

Madeleine: The second categorized climb is another HC mountain. One of the Tour’s favorite climbs, the Col de la Madeleine (19.2k at 7.9%), is a long steady haul up to 2000 meters of elevation (6562 feet), averaging about 8% over 19.2k. The Madeleine requires a very steady effort, with a brief maximum gradient over 10% right in the middle. It takes the best riders about an hour to climb this beast.

Stage 19 profile

After 135k have been covered, two more climbs come in the next 30k. After 180k, the final climb of the day will show who is really going to challenge for the stage win. The final cat-1 climb of the Col de Croix Fry is 11.3k at 7%. A 13k descent to the finish follows. The final kilometer includes a short ramp up to the finish line, so we will see who still has the legs for an explosive finish after all the climbing.

Stage 19's northeasterly route
This is a good stage for a breakaway, and a perfect stage for mountain points hunters to get in a break and scoop up all those points before the peloton arrives. Assuming the break is caught on or before the final climb, the first four climbs offer a max of 65 points to anyone who can top them all first.

Chris Froome, the overall race leader, leads the mountains competition as well. He has 104 points, Nairo Quintana of Movistar is second with 97 points, and Christophe Riblon moved up to third, with 77 points, after his impressive performance yesterday.

The first 15 in the mountains classification are mostly GC contenders, including Froome, Quintana, Nieve, Joaquim Rodriguez, Alejandro Valverde, Roman Kreuziger, Jakob Fuglsang, and Alberto Contador. The double mountain points available on mountaintop finishes gives the top men an advantage, since they are usually the first up the final climbs.

Only someone who is not high up in the overall standings would be allowed to get into a break to try for the mountain points remaining. He would need to collect a lot of them because tomorrow’s stage 20 around Annecy features another HC mountaintop finish, perfect for Froome to solidify his lead in the KOM—whether intentionally or not.

The polka dot jersey is really the only jersey left that is still up for grabs. The mountains jersey is not at all on Froome’s radar, but he could easily walk away with it nonetheless. Riblon, Van Garderen, Moser and Rolland could have legitimate opportunities, but the first three were in a long, grueling break yesterday, and Rolland keeps insisting that he is not going for the polka dots. So, unseating Froome or even Quintana seems a tall order now.

The two big climbs today come early, and that could mean the peloton will not go hard until later on in the stage. That would certainly give a breakaway an advantage, but I would expect the top GC riders to be there for the finish.

TO THE ACTION:

Lars Bak and Jon Izagirre are the first to attack after the flag drops to start the stage. Other moves follow and dozens of riders are off the front. The peloton is chasing them down. Must be some dangerous positions in the break.

Christophe Riblon is one of the riders on the attack. If he can muster up the energy, after yesterday’s herculean effort, then he has a chance to vie for the polka dot jersey.

The peloton trails the escapees by over a minute now.
Ryder Hesjedal and Jerome Cousin are out front with Izagirre now.
The gap over the peloton is increasing.

I had a very strong feeling that Hesjedal would attack today. Maybe if I had blogged about it, I would look kind of smart now.

Cousin drops off.
*Hesjedal and Izagirre now lead on the road.
About 40 riders are chasing 30 seconds behind them.
The peloton is 2:00 back.
The gaps are increasing as Hesjedal works a furious pace.

Some of the riders in the chase group:
De Marchi, Moser (CAN), Bak (LTB), De Clercq (LTB), Bakelants, Klöden, Didier (RLT), Cousin (EUC), Kadri, Riblon (ALM), Hernandez, Paulinho (TST), Rui Costa, Plaza, Rojas (MOV), Coppel (COF), Cunego, Serpa (LAM), Nordhaug (BEL), Hoogerland (VCD), Morabito (BMC), Feillu (SOJ), Nieve, Sicard (EUS), and more.

Rain starts falling on the Col du Glandon.
Hesjedal takes maximum points ahead of Izagirre, over the first summit.

Riblon, Rolland and Moser are trying to bridge the gap to the two leaders. All three are legitimate mountain jersey contenders. Riblon and Moser were in the break yesterday. And of course, Riblon won the stage.

The peloton go over the Glandon summit eight minutes after the leaders. The chasers are in between, just over three minutes behind the leaders.

Km 33.5 KOM 1 HC Col du Glandon (21.6k at 5.1%):
1. Hesjedal  2. Izagirre  3. Riblon  4. Moser  5. Rolland  6. Nieve  7. Kadri  8. T. Martin  9. Hoogerland  10. Didier

*Riblon is now just 11 points off the lead in the polka dot jersey competition.

160k to go: The riders are flying down the 1400-meter drop into Saint-Étienne-des-Cuines. Izagirre leads Hesjedal down.

The peloton riding toward the Col du Glandon on stage 19
Nieve is with the Riblon chasing group now.

A Lampre rider has bridged up to the first chasing group with Nieve, Riblon and Rolland. Looks like Serpa.

Like every time we pass through here, Paul Sherwin reminds us that this is where Hannibal led his huge war party, elephants and all, through the Alps in 218 BC.

Jack Bauer (GRS) has abandoned the race after crashing.

Flecha (VCD) has joined the Nieve chase group.

The Omega Pharma-Quickstep Team has sent Michal Kwiatkowski, Mark Cavendish and Jerome Pineau ahead of the peloton in an interesting escape attempt. I can’t imagine it is for Cavendish to get intermediate sprint points. He and Pineau are more likely there to help Kwiatkowski bridge up to the leaders.

*-145k: The current situation on the road:
Izagirre and Hesjedal lead the race through the valley toward La Chambre.
1:40 behind the leaders, Nieve, Riblon, Flecha, Rolland and Serpa?? Are chasing.
2:45 back, is the now 30-man chasing group.
7:10 back, the three OPQ riders are on the move.
The main peloton, including the yellow jersey are 8:13 behind the leaders (now they are saying the gap to the peloton is 10:00).

Svein Tuft has crashed, but is back up and riding.

The two leaders are on the second climb of the day.
Many riders are putting their warm gear back on for the weather at altitude ahead.

The early slopes are stringing the field out into long, broken lines.
Rolland is chasing the leaders alone now, as his companions have been swept up by the large chase group.

-136.5k: Hesjedal accelerates, and drops Izagirre.

*Hesjedal leads alone.

Izagirre is picked up by Pierre Rolland.

*-125k: Rolland must have dropped Izagirre because the French climber just caught up to Hesjedal in the lead, about 4k from the high summit.

Just 17 riders now in the chase group that once had 44.

At the summit of the Madeleine, Rolland accelerates ahead of Hesjedal for max points (25). After the summit Rolland gives Hesjedal a thank you gesture, suggesting the two might have had an agreement beforehand—or else it was just for not challenging Rolland for the points.

The first chasing group of about 17 or 18 riders, goes over 3:45 after the 2 leaders.
Nieve leads them over, and takes the third-most KOM points available (16).
The peloton cross over at twelve minutes back.

*Km 83.5 KOM 2 HC Col de la Madeleine ():
1.    Rolland  2. Hesjedal  3. Nieve  4. Bakelants  5. Geschke  6. Rui Costa  7. Didier  8. Sicard  9. Klöden  10. Plaza

Hesjedal and Rolland are working together on the descent of the Col de la Madeleine. (Hesjelland?)

Arthur Vichot crashes on the fast descent. Fortunately he goes down on the inside of a curve. He’s up and walking it off. Seems OK.
Saxo-Tinkoff leads the peloton down the mountain.

-95k: Jerome Cousin is picked up by the peloton.

Hesjelland, R to L
*The two leaders, Hesjedal and Rolland reach the bottom of the descent.

Marcel Sieberg (Lotto Belisol) has abandoned the race.

The intermediate sprint is coming in a few kms. Then the cat-2 Col de Tamié is the next obstacle coming up for the riders. It is 8.6k at 6.2%, and arrives with 70k to go in the stage.

The peloton scoop up more riders from the early break.

*km 129.5 INT – Albertville:
1. Hesjedal  2. Rolland  3. Rojas  4. Flecha  5. Perez  6. Sicard  7. Bakelants  8. Didier  9. Cunego  10. Coppel  11. Geschke  12. Rui Costa  13. Bardet  14. Plaza  15. Klöden

The peloton rides through the flat valley and passes the INT eleven minutes after the leaders.

Pierre Rolland has a rear puncture going through Albertville. Hesjedal waits for him, as they are about to be the first to hit the Tamié climb.

*-69k: Early on the climb, Rolland gets a gap on Hesjedal. He rides off alone. Hesjedal looks done after four hours in the break.

*Rolland leads alone.

The first chase group is about two minutes back. Several strong riders are in that group. Romain Sicard (EUS) has been doing all the work at the front of this group for some time. His teammate Nieve is still in there.

Christophe Le Mevel (COF) has abandoned.

Rolland is first over the day’s third summit. The chasers are 1:45 back. The peloton are about 10:35 back.

Km143 KOM 3 cat-2 Col de Tamié (8.6k at 6.2%):
1.    Rolland  2. Sicard  3. Serpa  4. De Clercq

Nieve, riding in 15th place overall, may or may not be interested in the mountain jersey race. It would take a lot of effort to try and stay in contention against Froome. Nieve would do better to go for a stage win today or tomorrow, or try to improve upon his 15th place on GC.

Rolland is taking some risks bombing down the descent of the Tamié. The next climb will arrive very soon.

*-47k: Rolland starts the penultimate climb up the category-1 Col de l’Epine.
He passes one of the more entertaining and creative pieces of roadside art we’ve seen in this Tour. A wooden figure on a bicycle, pedaling along side the road on a suspended wire. Very cool. That will certainly be in a lot of folks’ photos tonight.

-45k: Sicard, Nieve, Coppel and Serpa are on the front of the chasing group, 1:15 behind Rolland. The peloton trail by 10:51.

Team Saxo-Tinkoff start pushing very hard on the early slopes of the fourth climb. Matteo Tosatto is hammering away at the pedals, setting a high pace that is causing serious damage at the back of the peloton. Hesjedal is among the many riders being shed out the back now.

-40k: Rolland’s gap to the Navarro/Nieve chase group is 1:53.
Another group of 5 is chasing behind them.
The Europcar rider’s lead over the yellow jersey peloton is 9:41.
Everyone is on the penultimate climb.

-39.5k: Rolland is first over the cat-1 summit.
The peloton go over inside nine minutes down.

Km 165 KOM 4 cat-1 Col de l’Epine (6.1k at 7.3%):
1.    Rolland  2. Nieve  3. Bakelants  4. Coppel  5. T. Dumoulin  6. Navarro

Dark clouds are just up ahead. If it rains on the Croix Fry descent, it could get hairy.

*-24k: Rolland starts the final climb of the Col de la Croix Fry.

Navarro attacks the chase group.
He is quickly reeled in by Nieve, who accelerates momentarily. De Clerq, Bakelants, and Rui Costa are quick to get on his wheel.

-23.3k: Navarro puts in another attack. Nieve works to reel him in again. These moves are not dropping anyone from the group yet.
22.5k: Jerome Coppel settles into the front of the chase group as it reorganizes, and immediately rain begins to fall on them.

*-22k: A torrent of rain has opened up over the riders.

Rolland still leads up the final climb of the day.

*-20.5k: Rui Costa (MOV) attacks and tries to bridge up to the leader, Rolland.

20k to go: Rui Costa is 20 seconds behind Rolland now. The Portuguese rider is a great descender. He won stage 16 into Gap doing just that. This could be a big move.

*-19.3k: Rui Costa catches, and drops Rolland.
*Rui Costa now leads on the road, 6k from the summit.

Bakelants is riding with determination. He is in a chase group with Nieve, Navarro, De Clerq and Klöden, closing in on Rolland. They pass Rolland, and are :25 behind Rui Costa.

Rui Costa is 4k from the summit and holding on to a :25 advantage over the 5-man chase group. The peloton are 9:15 back.

Kiwi Jack Bauer was an early casualty today
*-17.5k: Nieve is dropped by the other 4 chasers.
Costa extends his lead to :30.

Rain continues to pour down on all the riders.
10 miles to go for Rui Costa. He will be difficult to catch if he goes over the summit with the 40-second advantage he has now. The Movistar rider could be on his way to a second stage win.

The descent into town continues right into the final kilometer. With about 400 meters to go, the road kicks up to the finish line. A tired rider at the finish could get caught by a determined chaser on the short slope.

-15.1k for Rui Costa: Valverde attacks out of the yellow jersey peloton.
John Gadret (ALM) jumps out after Valverde.

Valverde is currently 11th overall on the General Classification, but he is within 30 seconds of 8th place. That would be a nice bonus for him if he can keep a gap to Ten Dam, Kwiatkowski and Rogers all the way to the finish. He is another terrific descender, and can finish with a punch, so he has a good chance.

Gadret is currently 26th overall, 44:24 off the lead. I’m not sure what he is hoping to accomplish today, going on this attack with Valverde. A stage win is out of the question. Too many riders are still up the road. He could be testing his legs for a planned attack tomorrow. A mountaintop finish is certainly a stage he would think about escaping on. The only other thing I can think of is if he is hoping to pull himself into a top-20 position between today and tomorrow. Richie Porte is currently 20th, almost seven minutes ahead of Gadret on GC.

13k to go: Rui Costa goes over the final summit of the day, in the lead.
Costa is pulling no punches on the fast, wet descent.

10k to go for Costa. His closest chaser, Andreas Klöden of Radioshack, is 1:00 behind.

15k to go for the yellow jersey group.

Valverde and Gadret catch up with JJ Rojas, from the break. Now Valverde has a teammate with him. While their other teammate, Rui Costa is nine minutes up the road, riding away toward a possible second stage win of the Tour.

-8k for Costa: Andreas Klöden is 1:00 behind the leader.
1:30 behind Rui Costa, are Nieve, Bakelants, De Clercq, and Navarro.

6.1k to go for Costa.
*Nine minutes behind the leader, Purito comes up to the front of the yellow jersey group, and puts in a big acceleration. Quintana and Contador are quick to chase. Froome digs in and pulls up behind Quintana.
Fuglsang is at the front of the riders who have been gapped by the move.

Rodriguez, Contador, Quintana and Froome catch Gadret and Valverde.
Dan Moreno is shed out the back with Jeannesson and Izagirre.

5k to go for Costa.

Valverde is driving a very fast pace back with the GC group.
They near the summit of the Croix Fry.

Fuglsang and others are chasing the Froome group;
Porte yo-yos off the back, as the yellow jersey group crosses over the final summit;

Quintana sprints first among them, over the line. He looks back, and waits for Contador, Valverde, Froome, Gadret and J-Rod. He shares a quick word with J-Rod and Contador.

Valverde and Gadret attack the other four in the yellow jersey group again, this time right at the start of the descent.

Rui Costa has 3k to go and takes a sharp right turn toward the finish. The rain falls on him again.

Costa reaches some dry road. Klöden hits the dry next, still 1:00 back, but the Yellow jersey group is still back in the rain.

1k to go for Rui Costa.
Klöden trails him by :58.

Costa gets a high five from his team car. He knows he has another stage win in his pocket.

It is dry at the finish.

Rui Costa rounds the last left hand bend, climbs the short incline to the finish line, and celebrates the win.

Klöden comes in second, 48 seconds later.
Third place goes to Jan Bakelants, 1:44 down.
The other remains of the break trickle in over the next eight minutes. 17 of them finish before the yellow jersey group comes in, 8:40 behind Rui Costa.

Valverde and Gadret held off the Froome group all the way up until right at the line, so no advantage gained from their move.

Two-time 2013 TDF stage winner Rui Costa
So Rui Costa gets his second stage win of the Tour. Team Movistar can celebrate again. Alejandro Valverde put in some attacks today, but was ultimately unable to gain any time on Chris Froome. He was however, able to jump into the top ten, from 11th up to 9th, as Michal Kwiatkowski, Laurens Ten Dam, and Michael Rogers all lost time.

The top 5 on GC remain the same today.

Daniel Navarro of Cofidis is a big winner today. He jumps from 13th to 8th overall by making the break of the day, and gaining almost seven minutes.

Mikel Nieve of Euskaltel inches up closer to the top ten.

Michael Rogers of TST drops from 8th to 14th overall, after losing four and a half minutes to the yellow jersey group. But his leader, Alberto Contador still holds second overall. Unless they have come to some sort of truce, Nairo Quintana and Joaquim Rodriguez will probably do everything they can on the last mountain stage tomorrow in Annecy to unseat Contador, and grab the two podium spots behind Chris Froome.

170 riders finished today.
We now have a good, close battle for the king of the mountains jersey. Eleven points separate the top five in that competition.

Let’s wish Daisy Depoorter a swift and healthy recovery after her collision on the road yesterday. The 20-year-old Belgian pro was out training before the third stage of the Thüringen-Rundfahrt when she was hit by a truck. She sustained extensive injuries and is in intensive care now in Germany.

Stay tuned for my stage 20 preview…
