Stage 7 Report and Results 2013 Tour De France

205.5 kms from Montpellier to Albi
Medium mountains, flat finish;
Hot, sunny, temps around 30 c (High 80’s f); light wind;

Stage 7 on the map
2-man break: Jens Voigt (Radioshack) and Blel Kadri (ALM);
-132k: Voigt and Kadri lead by 5:00;

I figured at least one of the mountain jersey hunters would make the break today. Kadri is that man.
-126.8k: the lead is 4:20

As Daryl Impey of Orica GreenEdge is wearing the yellow race leader’s jersey today, the broadcaster I am watching played the song that was playing on the Orica team bus this morning. “Impi”, they said, is sort of an unofficial South African anthem. They are enjoying their recent successes, including putting an African into the yellow jersey for the first time in the Tour’s history.

Stage 7 Profile

*Christian Vande Velde has been nursing some wounds for a few days now. He went down again in a crash today at km11, so he and his Garmin team have decided to take him out of the race. It’s a shame because this was to be the 37-year-old’s last Tour De France. He is the eighth retiree, and the second American to retire from the race so far.

Voigt and Kadri are in the lead together, riding up the first categorized climb;

Km 80 (-125.4k): KOM 1 Cat-3 Col des 13 Vents (6.9km at 5.6%):
1.    Kadri  2. Voigt

-121k: Gilbert bike change;
-117k: The 2 leaders are on the next climb: the cat-2 Col de la Croix de Mounis is the hardest climb today. It would be Kadri’s prime target.

An early pile-up
I can understand why fans like to run along the side of the road waving their national flags. What I don’t understand is why so many of them like to do it in their underwear.

Cannondale is pushing the pace at the front of the peloton to try and distance the sprinters. They want their man Sagan to be free of the other top sprinters when they reach the finish. Cavendish is already a minute behind the main bunch. Omega send 3 riders back to help Cav up the mountain. They are part of a rear split bunch. The peloton is stretched out and splitting up on the climb.

Over the summit, Kadri and Voigt have 2:12 on the peloton.
Behind, Rolland has jumped out of the pack to try and get the next available KOM points. Romain Bardet of Ag2R is marking him, hoping to beat Rolland to the line, and so protect his teammate, Kadri’s standing in that competition. They start their sprint for the line at the top. Rolland relents, and will be fourth at the line.

-111k: KOM 2 cat-2 Col de la Croix de Mounis (6.7k at 6.5%):
1. Kadri  2. Voigt  3. Bardet  4. Rolland

André Greipel is in a group about 1:10 behind the main peloton. Cavendish is in a group about two minutes behind the Greipel group. Cannondale lead the peloton, keeping the pace high across the plateau that followed the last summit.

I still like Cav’s chances. Their best chance may be to catch the Greipel group before Greipel catches the front group, because a larger chasing group has better chances. They have about a 50k stretch here to do it before the next climb. The last two climbs are not very difficult so I think the chasers have a good shot to catch up either before or after the climbs. Whether they still have enough energy for a finish sprint after all the chasing, remains to be seen.

Just inside 100k to go: Kadri and Voigt still lead together. The Cannondale-led peloton is closing in, now about :30 behind them. The leaders are discussing whether to sit up or keep going.

-98.5k: Voigt attacks and takes off ahead alone. The peloton are just a few hundred meters behind.

Kadri sits up and is caught. But he will be on the podium today donning the King of the Mountains jersey.
Now Voigt is done. He is picked up by the pack with about 97k (about 60 miles) still left to ride.

So, the Cannondale led peloton leads on the road now. According to race radio, the Greipel group trails them by about 1:30; Cavendish is about :45 further back.

They have just passed the high point of the stage, the 901-meter-high Col de la Jasse (uncategorized) with about half the stage still remaining.

-90k: The Cavendish group has caught up to the Greipel group. They trail the leading peloton by about 2:45 now.

Marccel Kittel of the Argos Shimano team is also in the chasing peloton. So that makes three top sprinter’s teams who will be highly motivated to chase down the front group. Seven Cannondale riders lead the front group, equally motivated to give their man, Sagan the best possible chance for a stage win.

The chasing group is not making up much time. If they can’t start catching up faster, they may have to admit defeat. They are not going to get on before the intermediate sprint point, so Sagan can increase his lead in the sprint competition by taking the INT, and leaving no points left for his rivals to grab (because his bunch will grab them all). If Sagan wins the INT his lead will be unassailable today, regardless of the finish line places.

-80k: The lead is still around 2:30.

*They are reporting that Alexander Kristoff (Katusha) has abandoned the race. That’s one less fast sprinter.

Km 135 (70k to go) INT:
1. Sagan  2. Flecha  3. Sabatini  4.  Clarke  5. Gerrans  6. Impey  7. De Marchi  8. Albasini  9. Marangoni  10. Moser  11. Koren  12. Bodnar  13. Siutsou  14. Porte  15. Kennaugh

Cannondale worked very hard on stage 7
Sagan will keep the green jersey tonight.
The chasing group hits the INT line 2:39 after the leaders. They are not gaining any time on the lead group.

*-68k: Up front, Jan Bakelants attacks the peloton. Cyril Gautier (EUC) and JJ Oroz (EUS) try to bridge up to Bakelants. Bakelants gets a :15 lead.

-65k: The 2 chasers get on with Bakelants.
*3 leaders on the road now: Bakelants (RSL), Gautier (EUC) and Oroz (EUS).

*There has been about a half-minute discrepancy between the posted time splits and the race radio announcements. Someone could be trying to inspire the chasers—or demoralize the leaders—or else someone is just wrong. So the gap is either around 2:00 or 2:30.

The lead at 38 miles left is :38.
-60k: The 3 leaders have :46 on the peloton, and 2:51 on the chasing group.

Km 149: KOM 3 Cat-3 Cote de le Quintaine (6.5k at 4%):
1.    Bakelants  2. Gautier
53 seconds later, the peloton cross the INT line.

I was thinking the Greipel/Cavendish/Kittel chasing group might assess the distance after the cat-3 Quintaine climb, to decide whether to keep chasing or not. They still trail by over 2:00, so they may give it up soon. The Cannondale boys have been pushing hard, and it’s working.

With 50k left to the finish, The 3 leaders have 1:00 on the Sagan peloton, and almost 3 minutes on the Cav group.

Sagan would surely like the stage win, but he does not need to do anything else to keep the green jersey. I’m sure his team will continue to drive hard, but they may lose a touch of impetus since they have locked the jersey. With that, and the length of time that Cannondale have been working hard, it is possible that the chasers behind them could start to gain time now.

*-40k: With about 25 miles to go, the Cavendish group has given up the chase after being unable to gain any ground for the past two hours. They trail the leaders by 4:25, and rising. So much for my optimistic prediction! The peloton trails the leaders now by 44 seconds, and closing.

 Km 171: KOM 4 cat-4 Cote de Teillet (2.6k at 5%):
1.    Bakelants

-30k: Bakelants, Oroz and Gautier lead.
The peloton is :45 behind them. The back group is now at +7:30.
The leaders have been yo-yo-ing in front, from about :30 to a 1:00 lead. Mostly between :40 and :45 lead.

-20k: the 3 leaders have :41 on the peloton, and 9:43 on the grupetto.

-10k: :24 and 11:35;
They will get caught before the finish.
Peter Sagan is going to feel obligated to take the stage win after his team has worked so hard to set him up. With most of the other top sprinters eleven minutes behind him, I think he has a very good shot.

 -6k: the lead is :10;
-5k: 5 seconds;
-4k: The Cannondale train takes a roundabout on a bad line and gets disrupted. The 3 leaders have 7 seconds.

Bakelants keeps a high pace out front.
Radioshack, Omega, Sky and BMC all move riders up toward the front where the Cannondale train is still pushing the pace.

*The peloton catches the 3 leaders with 2.6k to go.
-2k: Sagan has three teammates left in front of him for the run in to the finish.
1k to go: Argos are moving up, now Lampre. Sagan is losing his ideal position.

500 meters to the line: Sagan has one last lead-out man. John Degenkolb starts his sprint on the inside lane by the left barriers. He comes around Sagan and pushes on.
Sagan gets into his slipstream, and then comes around him on the right and sprints to the win!

The finish sprint
Degenkolb and Daniele Bennati of Saxo Bank have a photo finish for second. Degenkolb has it by a nose, Bennati is third.

Lampre’s time trial man, Adriano Malori is another non-finisher today.

I’m going to go out for a bike ride and come back when the 80-man Cavendish group comes in…

  1. How was that bike ride!? (That one made me bust out laughing!)
    I'm with you on being confused at why some people insist on being in their unds or guys in dresses, but I like it to Halloween...a chance to dress like a slut is a wasted opportunity.
    Cannondale was not messing around and it obviously paid off. Their strong lead today made me wonder if Ted king would've been able to keep up with what looked like their second day of TTT like riding.
    On to stage 8 for me....

  2. well, I didn't really go for that bike ride--but I could have lapped my block a few times I suppose!
    Cannondale impressed the s*#t out of me on Friday! It was a tremendous show of unity and strength that I won't compare to a gay pride march.
