TDF Stage 7 Report and Results 2014 Tour De France

Stage 7 Race Report:

Stage 7 on the map

A long, mostly flat stage under cloudy skies today:
234.5k (146 miles) from Epernay to Nancy;
Just two cat-4's on the course, both inside the last 20k. The last is a short, steep climb with a fast descent, and it tops out just 5k before the finish. Looks like a tempting spot for a late attack, but I think several sprinters should make it over to contest the stage--assuming the break doesn't succeed.

Peter Sagan is a good pick today. I like Samuel Dumoulin as a dark-horse pick.

Stage 7 profile

*Today's finish town of Nancy was the sight of some race carnage on stage 6 of the Tour back in 2005, when a crash up front led to a huge pile-up of riders on a wet curve running into the finish. Then 25-year-old Fassa Bartolo rider, Lorenzo Bernucci became the unlikely benefactor of the metal, rubber and flesh apocalypse behind him, when he magically escaped the pile-up and sprinted ahead to take one of his two career race wins--and certainly the biggest of his career.

Lorenzo Bernucci was lucky in Nancy in 2005
Two years later, while riding for T-Mobile, Bernucci tested positive for a banned substance, and received a one-year ban. In 2010 he was caught with doping substances in his house, and is still now serving a five-year ban that is due to end in early 2016, when he will be 36.

To the road!...

6-man break: Elmiger (IAM), Edet (COF), Busche (TFR), Huzarski (TNE), Pichot (EUR), and Delaplace (BSE) have escaped the bunch.
Their lead was uo to 4:30 around km30.

The Cannondale team has been doing the driving at the head of the peloton, keeping the escapees from gaining too much time. Peter Sagan tweeted this morning a suggestion that he likes today's finish. "Could today be the day?"  --or something to that effect... That should not come as a surprise to anyone. The punchy incline 5k before the flat finish would look tempting to the young Slovak points jersey leader.

Stef Clement (BEL) has crashed out. He has been taken away in an ambulance.
Danny Van Poppel (TFR) has also retired from the race.

The peloton was passed by this speedy fan
-120k: the lead is 1:38.

*-86.5k: INT SPR:
1. Elmiger  2. Pichot  3. Delaplace  4. Busche  5. Edet  6. Huzarski  7. Coquard  8. Renshaw  9. Sagan  10. Viviani  11. Petacchi  12. Sabatini  13. Terpstra  14. Kittel  15. Delage

Bryan Coquard wins the sprint for 7th from the peloton, and crosses the sprint line :57 seconds behind the six leaders.

Cannondale reorganize and continue to lead the peloton chase. At least eight of their green jerseys are clear in front.
-80k: The peloton leave the six leaders on a 1:00 leash for a while.

Tinkoff-Saxo and Astana are also riding near the front of the peloton; Team Movistar move several riders up the middle in a neat line.

-50k: The lead is down to :40.

*-45.6k: With the lead down to about :34, Elmiger jumps out of the saddle suddenly, on a long straight stretch of road through flat farmland. Huzarski is the first to chase onto his wheel. Delaplace sits up, looking behind for the peloton, but manages to get back with the other 3 to chase after Elmiger and Huzarski.

Just inside 40k to go: The 4 chasers from the early break sit up and are absorbed into the peloton.
Elmiger and Huzarski continue to push on ahead, building their lead back up to 1:20 at this point.

200 kilometers of racing behind them now, the Team Cannondale-led peloton are chasing the two remaining leaders, gapped by 1:13.

Team SKY have shepherded their new leader, Richie Porte up the front ranks of the peloton.

-24k: The 2 leaders are clinging to a :23 advantage on the now undulating, twisty roads.
*Inside 20k to go: Huzarski and Elmiger approach the first climb of the day, but the peloton is nipping at their heels. They are swept up on the early slopes.

-19k: Thomas Voeckler attacks out of the peloton. He quickly grabs a small gap, and no one seems to feel like chasing him.
Belkin's Stef Clement, down for the count
Several riders have relinquished contact off the back, including sprinters Kittel and Greipel. Demare loses contact, too.

OGE are at the front of the peloton for Simon Gerrans...
-17.8k: Voeckler is reeled in by the peloton.

*km 217.5: 1st KOM; Cat-4 Cote de Maron; 3.2k at 5%:
1. Yates

-16.4k: A crash in the peloton... Rojas (MOV) and Van Garderen (BMC) go down. Instantly, there's a tangle of bikes in the middle of the road. TVG grabs a bike from teammate Peter Velits, and then Peter Stetina leads him in chase of the quickly departing peloton.

It looked like TVG's rear wheel was grazed by Rojas' front wheel.  Tejay had to adjust his position and slow a little when his two teammates in front swerved slightly to the right, and Tejay got blocked out by his teammate's wheel on the left, and a Belkin rider on his right.

Alex Howes (GRS) was down, an IAM rider and a NetApp (Schillinger?) rider are also down. Gregory Rast is also playing catch-up.

Moinard and Schär are helping Stetina pace TVG back up to the peloton. There's no way they can catch up now, with the high pace up front.
Report that Darwin Atapuma, the Colombian BMC climber, has had to drop out. This is not Van Garderen's day.

BMC leader Tejay Van Garderen on the pavement, & Reichenbach

-7k: The peloton go through about a 130-degree turn. The Van Garderen chase group has grown to 11 riders, and trails by :49.

-6.4k: Cyril Gautier (EUR) Jumps out of the front of the bunch. Nico Roche quickly reels him in.

-5.7k: Sagan moves to the front. Valverde is behind him.

*Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) moves up with Sagan, and suddenly the two of them have a five second gap!

*km229: 2nd KOM; Cote de Boufflers, 1.3k at 7.9%:
1. Van Avermaet

-4k: The TVG chase group is over 1:00 back now.
This run-in is technical. Lots of turns.

Inside 2k to go: Sagan keeps looking over his shoulder. He shakes out his legs. He looks like he doesn't believe the two of them can make it, so he wants to save energy to contest the bunch sprint. GVA wants to keep going.

No sprint trains are organized in the bunch. It's every man for himself...

*-1k: The riders make the right turn that was the site of the big 2005 pile-up. Just around the turn...
...and there's a crash! An Astana rider is down...they say it's Kangert.
Van Den Broecke is down, too.

*A few hundred meters later and there's another crash!
Andrew Talansky has taken a hard tumble on the run-in to the finish. Ouch.

The front riders go into their sprint...
...Mateo Trentin takes the lead.
Sagan is moving up fast on his right...
...and Trentin takes the win ahead of Sagan at the line!
The photo-finish shows Trentin holding on to win by a nose.
That's Trentin's second career stage win here.

Tony Gallopin took third for Lotto-Belisol.

The finish sprint was a close one
The replay shows Simon Gerrans coming around Talansky and causing the American to crash. The Australian just cut across Talansky's line from the left, and jumped over into Sagan's slipstream on the American's right. That was a severe lane change in my opinion.

Talansky had turned his head to glance to the right at the absolute worst moment, just before Gerrans' move.  Just as Talansky turned his head back frontward, Gerrans moved across his line. But the bottom line as I see it, is that Gerrans should not have made such a dramatic lane change inside the last 100 meters in a bunch sprint. And Talansky was facing forward when Gerrans cut him off.

Andrew Talansky went down inside the final 100 meters
Gerrans should be relegated for that. They should definitely discipline him for that reckless move. He should at least lose his 5th place finish and be relegated to the back.
I'm curious to see how they handle this. Liggett and Sherwin don't seem to be making anything of it during the live broadcast. Bob Rolle seems to think it's Talansky's own fault. I would generally defer to Bobke, but I really didn't like Gerrans' move.
Christian Vandevelde (who used to ride for Garmin, too) placed the blame at 60/40, leaning just slightly in Talansky's favor.

Sep Vanmarcke had to swerve to his left to avoid hitting the falling Talansky. Vanmarcke and Kevin Reza, next to him, were fortunate to stay up, and finished 9th and 11th.

On the way to his team bus, Talansky voiced his anger at Gerrans. Gerrans denied any wrong-doing.
Talansky did not seem to incur much an injury from the crash, so that is good.
And of course, no one who was held up by the crashes inside the final 3k will lose any time.

Tejay Van Garderen lost a chunk of time as a result of his crash.

Martin Elmiger is voted the most aggressive rider today.

DNF: Atapuma (BMC-broke his leg)
