TDF Stage 8 Report and Results 2014 Tour De France

Stage 8 Report:

Stage 8 on the map

Today's stage goes 161k through the Lorraine region to the Vosges, from Tomblaine to Gérardmer (La Mauselaine).
The riders will see the first cat-2 climbs of the race; and the first uphill finish.
The profile shows about 130k of flats, followed by three climbs in quick succession in the final 25k, including a short, steep kick up to the finish. Made for a puncheur.

Weather: Overcast, mid 60s f. Rain later.

DNS: Mathias Frank (BMC) retired last night after finishing stage 7 with a fractured femur.

Vincenzo Nibali enters stage 8 with a lead of 2:37 over Alberto Contador.
Kwiatkowski trails Nibali by :50; he is Nibali's closest GC threat.

Van Den Broeck trails by 1:45; Porte by 1:54; Talansky by 2:05; Valverde, Bardet, and Rui Costa all trail Nibali by 2:11; Mollema is at 2:27; then Contador at 2:37; Van Garderen by 3:14; Pinot by 3:24; and Peraud is at 3:29.

Stage 8 Profile

Peter Sagan comes into the stage with a lead of over 100 points in the points jersey competition. Will he go for it at the finish today? He has shown that he is capable of impressive results on punchy finishes as well as flat sprints.  Sagan has finished in the top 5 on every stage so far. No rider has finished the first seven stages with all top-ten finishes since 1930**.

Purito Rodriguez would normally eat up today's race profile, but he seems to still be building form. He has not raced since crashing out of the Giro d'Italia in mid-May.
This is a good finish for Valverde, but he may have to defer to the break unless the peloton chooses to chase down the break today.

To the road...

Fast and furious start;
Breaks aren't taking.

Bart De Clercq (LTB) has abandoned the race (ankle).

*~km35: Sylvain Chavanel (IAM) and Niki Terpstra (OPQ) get away.
Simon Yates, Adrien Petit, and Blel Kadri join the 2 up front to form a 5-man breakaway group.

Break (5): Chavanel (IAM), Terpstra (OPQ, Kadri (ALM), Yates (OGE), and Petit (COF).

Today's break has a good chance of succeeding. They could likely be allowed to get a healthy lead, and may not be chased down.

Sylvain Chavanel and Niki Terpstra initiated the day's break

-82k: Approaching the feed zone, the lead is up to 10:00. I don't think they will be reeled in.

*km 100 (61k to go) INT Sprint (Dinozé):
1. Terpstra  2. Petit  3. Chavanel  4. Kadri  5. Yates  6. Coquard  7. Kittel  8. Sagan  9. Greipel  10. Renshaw  11. Petacchi  12. Gene  13. Viviani  14. Sabatini  15. Grivko

In case I haven't discussed it before: The points distributed for each day's intermediate sprint, from 1st place to 15th, are: 20, 17, 15, 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1.
So, Coquard just received 10 points for being 6th across the INT line, and Sagan receives 8 pts for 8th; so Coquard gains 2 points on the points-jersey leader, Sagan. Sagan still holds a lead of over 100 points in that competition.

It may sometimes seem futile for riders to continue engaging in sprints, expending needed energy, if for instance, one rider has a stranglehold on that competition (A certain lime-green-clad Slovak wheelies into mind). At this point it is still relatively early in the race, so a handful of riders are sprinting with the idea to not just win sprint prizes, but to remain in contention for the jersey, too. It is always good to be poised well--if a rider is interested in pursuing a jersey--in case a rider ahead of you in the competition should falter or retire from the race. As the race progresses, with fewer sprint-finish stages remaining, fewer opportunities arise to gain on one's rivals. Since they raised the points available at intermediate sprints

The breakaway group

The riders could be rolling toward a stormy finish. Thunderstorms are pelting for the finish area.

-52k: Shortly after the peloton reached the INT on dry roads, the leaders rode into heavy rainfall.

The lead is over 11:00. The peloton are in the rain now, too.
Katusha move toward the front of the peloton.

-30k: The peloton have turned up the pace, and the lead is dwindling. The breakaway's advantage is down to 7:30 now.

*-26k: The leaders begin the first climb of the day.
Garmin and Saxo get organized at the front of the peloton...
*About 1k into the climb, Chavanel attacks his fellow escapees.  Kadri is first to chase him.. The other 3 are maintaining their rhythm.

Chav has built a nice gap. Several meters behind him, Kadri has also gapped the other three. Kadri is working to catch Chavanel.

Peter Sagan is dropping to the back of the peloton.
-23.3k: Kadri has caught up with Chavanel in the lead.
They lead the peloton now by about 4:40.

-22.5k: Kadri is now leaving Chav in his dust. Blel Kadri is riding up toward the King of the Mountains jersey (he came in trailing Lemoine by , and a possible stage win...

-20k: Kadri still leads on the Croix des Moinats climb. He is holding :40 over Chavanel, and 4:30 over the peloton--with a few chasers in between.

Kadri summits first, followed by Chavanel :49 later. The peloton cross over at +4:30.

*km 142: 1st KOM: cat-2 Col de le Croix des Moinats (7.6k at 6%):
1. Kadri  2. Chavanel  3. Yates  4. Terpstra

Kwiatkowski is losing contact in the back of the pack.

Chavanel on the attack again, at around 25k to go

Contador and three Tinkoff-Saxo teammates are leading the chase at the front of the bunch.
Chavanel is losing time to Kadri on the descent and onto the second climb.

*-14k: Onto the cat-2 Col de Grosse Pierre listed as 3k at 7.5%, but the crucial parts are very steep.

Kadri is out of the saddle, rocking back and forth on the pedals. He cuts a mean swath through the thick crowds clogging the narrow road to the summit of the 2nd KOM. He gets several pushes on the way up, from the tifosi.

10k to go for Kadri. He is getting nearer to the top...
The peloton have cut the lead down to under four minutes, behind the lead of Mick Rogers.
Rolland and Fuglsang ride in a small group that has lost touch with the back of the peloton.

*km150: 2nd KOM; Col de Grosse Pierre (3k at 7.5%):
1. Kadri  2. Chavanel  3. Yates  4. Terpstra

The descent down to the base of the final climb is dark and wet. The riders look like they are inside a thick cloud, though the altitude here is under 900m.

-3k for Kadri.
Tanel Kangert, chasing the peloton with Fuglsang, misses a turn and skids to the side of the road, but stays upright.

Kadri embarks on the final climb to the finish. His closest chaser is 2:15 behind. They are still calling the gap to the GC peloton chasers at 3:26.

*Talansky crashes! Geraint Thomas is there, as well as Trofimov and Konig; and I think Kwiatkowski was the first one to take off from the tangle as the cameras arrived. Bad timing for those important guys.

Daniel Navarro and Frank Schleck are still chasing to save some time.

Inside the final steep kilometer, Kadri is getting congratulations from his Ag2R team car.

Alberto Contador's Team Tinkoff-Saxo lead the chase
Contador still has Rogers and Roche leading him up. Nibali has been on Contador's wheel for a very long time now.

Yates is caught and passed by the GC guys.
Peraud and Van Garderen take over for the Saxo guys, for the push to the top.

Just before the red kite, Contador accelerates and takes Nibali with him.
They are chased by Valverde, Porte, TVG, Peraud...
They pass Terpstra, and Contador keeps accelerating, out of the saddle, looking behind...
*...AC and Nibali have gapped the others...

Kadri rounds the last bend on an interminable final km. He is smiling broadly in the pouring rain as he approaches the finish line. The Frenchman for Ag2R raises his arms, blows a kiss, and crosses the line to take the win!

That is Kadri's third career win, and it's a big one. He will also take over the KOM jersey for his efforts.

[I didn't want to jinx him by saying it earlier, but I am glad I put him on my fantasy team last night!]

Contador and Nibali catch the last Escapee, Sylvain Chavanel, and leave him dejected on their way to race for second place.
Nibali is just staying on AC's wheel.
Porte is closing in behind them...

Contador pulls away from Nibali in the final 20 meters, and takes 2nd place. Nibali is third.
Porte manages 4th place, and just behind are Pinot for FDJ, and Kadri's ALM team leader, JC Peraud.

More bad luck for Andrew Talansky
The rest of the riders cross the line one by one...

Nibali has taken more time from all of his rivals, except for Contador, who took 2 seconds back.

Talansky has lost 2:17 to Nibali today, and dropped to 16th place. He has been on the ground a lot. Hopefully he can recover in time for the real mountains...

Kwiatkowski concedes 1:36 to the Shark, holding on to 4th place, but is now trailing by 2:26.

Sagan drops from 2nd to 38th place on the GC--but that is no surprise, as the road has tilted upwards. It is worth noting that today is the first stage Sagan did not finish in the top five. You can be sure however, that he is not done here.

Kadri is ecstatic as he takes the podium to receive his awards.

Stage 9 Preview:

Tomorrow’s stage 9 is another one where a break could succeed. It's a tough stage to pick a winner on. Six categorized climbs are on the course, but the last one tops out with more than 40k to go the finish. It's probably too much climbing for a bunch sprint finish, but too much flat road at the end to make for a GC battle. The GC favorites could be happy to let a break go--as long as no one high up enough on GC to be a threat gets away.

The GC contenders faced off in the end
It's also another one for King of the Mountains jersey coveters, with a possible total of 26 mountain points available to a perseverant escapee who can be first over each of the six climbs.

I am looking at some of the fast-finishing breakaway artists, like Bakelants, Albasini, Vichot or maybe Edet or Hansen might go for a shot at a stage win on Sunday. I also think it could be a stage that a strong time trialist might try his luck on. If the break is given enough rope, someone like Fabian Cancellara, Tony Martin, Jeremy Roy, Tom Dumoulin or Jan Barta could give it a go. Two weeks remain before the big ITT on stage 20, and with some summit finishes coming up, many will want to try their luck on stage 9.

France has a winner: Stage 8 victor, Blel Kadri of AG2R
