STAGE 12 Race Recap and Results

Thursday May 16, 2013
STAGE 12
134 kms  From Longarone to Treviso   mostly flat
CONSTANT HEAVY RAIN, 18c, winds SE 25 kph

2 categorized climbs today, both are small cat. 4’s. The first climb is the Muro de Ca' del Poggio, which the peloton will hit at about km 57. In 1.15km of climbing, the road kicks up to gradients of 18% and 16%. The second climb, the Montello Santa Maria Della Vittoria at km 93, is 3.6 kms long but less steep at a 7% average, with only one early section of 14%.
The final run in is flat, but technical.  Eight turns and a roundabout mark the last 7.5 kilometers, with four of them coming between 3 and 1.5 kms to go.

Wiggins is among the riders who have come down with an illness (chest infection).

First few kms neutralized (due to broken-down bus);
They have now extended this early, neutralized section due to the awful weather.
The race officials’ car is keeping the pace slow at the beginning. There is talk about shortening the course somewhere.  They also decided to mark finish times for GC at the 3km to go banner, to avoid crashes that could come in the final run-in through the technical finale. New tarmac near the finish, too.

Km 9: 4 riders break clear of the pack: Fabio Felline (Androni Giocattoli), Maxim Belkov (Katusha), Bert De Backer (Argos-Shimano) and Maurits Lammertink (Vacansoleil).
Despite the Russian’s impressive stage 9 win in the rain the other day, Belkov’s work here is apparently not done.
Marco Marcato (Vacansoleil) now escapes, trying to bridge up to the 4 escapees.
 -120k: leaders have a gap of 1:34 to the peloton;
Marcato catches up to the other 4 escapees;

1st INT Sprint: 1. Belkov, 2. de Backer, 3. Lammertink, 4. Felline, 5. Marcato.
-103 k: Lead is now around 3:00;
*CRASH: The whole escape group went down on a wet curve except for de Backer;
3 of them get new bikes.
The peloton goes through the same slippery curve in near slow motion.

-78k: the leaders approach the first climb.
1st KOM: 1. Marcato 2. Belkov 3. Felline
Peloton summits 3:00 later;
Heavy rain continues to soak the peloton;

Daniele Bennati gets a bike change that seems to take a week to accomplish.
-67 k: lead is 2:50
Omega Pharma driving the front of the peloton;
Approaching the 2nd INT the lead has come down a little (2:20);
Belkov and de Backer seem to be doing most of the work in the break group, and Felline the least; though it could just be that the camera has not shown us the Vacansoleil guys taking their turns as much.

-55k: 2nd INT Sprint:
1. Lammertink 2. Belkov 3. Marcato 4. De Backer 5. Felline

-44k: onto the 2nd (and final) categorized climb…
Current King of the Mountains leader Stefano Pirazzi is taking it easy on the back of the peloton. Not enough mountain points available on the road today for him to bother, and his 20-point lead in that category means his blue jersey is in no threat of being swiped.
Belkov leads the break up the to the summit for the KOM pts;

2nd KOM: 1. Belkov 2. Felline 3. Marcato
The Peloton tops the hill, and under the KOM banner they trail the break by 2:39; They are 2 kms behind the leaders on the road.

The rain has not let up at all; it continues to pummel the course.
-37k: de Backer accelerates on the winding descent; after 2kms he sits up and has a snack.
-30k: The gap is holding fairly steady at 2:37 as the leaders turn right, off the main road, to ride through the town of Giavera del Montello.
The rest of the course is flat to the finish.

*Since km 9, the 5 leaders on the road are: Belkov, de Backer, Lammertink, Felline, and Marcato.
Vacansoleil have two riders out of the five in the break: Marcato and Lammertink.
The peloton pass under the 30k to go banner 2:30 behind the escapees, and almost exactly 2kms behind them on the road.

In the middle of the peloton, Taylor Phinney blows a kiss to the camera.
Almost everybody else looks miserable.
-25k BMC now working at the front of the peloton; Cannondale have been up there too.
The peloton picks up the pace suddenly and starts to string out;
Wiggins is in a group that gets caught out, he’s got several teammates with him to try and catch up to the rest. The speed is high now, so they will have to work hard. I would not say their prospects look exceptionally good.

The lead is under 2:00 now.
-20k: The 5 leaders have a gap of 1:48 to the pink jersey group and 3:01 to the Wiggins group.
 Now the pace has quickened again in the pink jersey peloton; Not so for Wiggins: the fading British hope is 3:00 back, and the pink jersey is closing in on the break, now behind by 1:24;
-12.5k: the Nibali group is within a minute of the break now. At this pace catching the break is not out of the question.

-10k: Lead is :34 to the big Nibali group. Still over 3:00 to Wiggins;
-7.4k: onto last lap, lead at :27;
navigating lots of turns;
-5k: lead is :18.
3k to go: lead down to :11

-1k :06 gap;
Speeding down the long finishing straight, the peloton barreling down on the desperate escapees; they can see the line 500 meters ahead;
The break is caught in the last 200 meters, and the sprinters dash past…

Mark Cavendish takes his 100th career win and third of this race.
Wiggins loses 3:17 and drops out of the top ten.
