STAGE 11 Recap and Results

Wednesday May 15, 2013
182k from Tarvisio to Vajont
I am going to call this one a hilltop finish
Weather: partly cloudy, 18 c, wind S 15kph, Humidity 61%
Sun forecasted but some rain reported early. Wet roads on the mountains from snowmelt;

Stage 11 Profile

A long category 2 climb makes up the middle of the stage. The 30-km long Sella Ciampigotto summits 55km to the base of the final climb at Codissago. It is a mostly descending ride to the final climb which covers about 7 kms averaging only about 5%, with a max of 9% briefly, before a short descent to the finish line. A large group may contest the finish if a breakaway does not succeed. Half the teams still have their full contingent of riders in the race.

The stage commemorates the 1963 Vajont Dam tragedy where more than 2000 people died after a landslide forced massive amounts of water over the dam. This is the 50th anniversary of  the catastrophe.

DNS: Sylvain Georges (positive control for Heptaminol—the same illegal substance that Dmitriy Fofonov tested positive for in the 2008 Tour de France).
You may recall Georges was the leader on the road for about 7kms toward the end of stage 4 before being overtaken by Di Luca and Chalapud.

*After 60 kms of riding no escape group has formed!

*-100km: a group of about 20 have broken clear of the pack; they are: Egoi Martínez (Euskaltel), Leonardo Duque (Colombia), Juan Jose Cobo (Movistar),  Ramunas  Navardauskas (Garmin-Sharp), Guillaume Bonnafond (AG2R), Jackson Rodríguez (Androni Giacattoli), Stafano Pirazzi (Bardiani Valvole), Paul Martens (Blanco), Daniel Oss (BMC), Cayetano Sarmiento (Cannondale), Johan Le Bon (FdJ), Vladimir Gusev (Katusha), Serge Pauwels (OPQS), Jens Keukeleire (Orica-GreenEdge), Yaroslav Popovych (RadioShack-Leopard), Salvatore Puccio (Sky) Patrick Gretsch (Argos-Shimano), Evgeni Petrov (Saxo-Tinkoff), Frederik Veuchelen (Vacansoleil) and Danilo Di Luca (Vini Fantini).

*They’re on the first climb.
Petrov is the highest on GC, over 13 minutes off the lead;
Astana, Lampre, and Lotto are the only teams without a rider in the break;
-90k: lead group has 5:00 advantage;
Sunny and clear now;
-70k: midway up the climb the gap is 5:45 to the peloton;

Astana leads the chase with Sky just behind;
Pirazzi jumps out of the escape group looking for the KOM points at he summit; Sarmiento follows;
Temperature cooling as they climb; snow on the roadside;
Jackson Rodriguez beats Pirazzi to the line for the mountain points;
The peloton behind by 5:28 as they summit with 61 km to go;
1st KOM: 1. Rodriguez 2. Pirazzi 3. Bonnafond 4. Sarmiento 5. Pauwels

*Gretsch attacks out of the break on the descent, followed by Popo;
The time trial specialist, Gretsch was part of the escape on stage four as well;
-50k: peloton down 5:18;
Absolutely gorgeous views on the twisting descent;
At the bottom of the descent Gretsch has a 1:00 lead over the break and 5:27 to the peoton, and he keeps gaining time;

-42k: 1st INT Sprint: Lozzo di Cadore- 1. Gretsch 2. Veuchelen 3. Navardauskas 4. Petrov 5. Lebon
-35k: leader on the road, Gretsch has 1:29 to the 1st chase grp; 5:49 to the peloton (which puts them about 3 ½ kms behind the leader on the road);
Astana is organized at the head of the peloton. They are not chasing very hard right now.

-34k: 2nd INT: Pieve di Cadore- 1. Gretsch 2. Cobo 3. Popovych 4. Puccio 5. Di Luca
-25k: Gretsch has increased his lead on the peloton to 6 minutes; still 1:20 to the chasers in G2;
The contenders will be perfectly happy to let Gretsch go and take the stage, as he is no threat to the overall classification. The 18 or 19 men still chasing him might have other ideas…

-24k: Di Luca big acceleration out of G2, marked by Pauwels; they’re reeled back in;
Bonnafond tries a dig now; Navardauskas and Oss get on his wheel, and then zip away right past him; They’ve got a gap over the rest of the chase group now;

-20k: Gretsch still leads with +1:01 to G2, and 6:03 to the peloton;
5 chasers form a second chase group, but are reeled back in by the main chase group;
-17.5k: Navardauskas and Oss catch up to Gretsch; Gretsch may not have seen them coming, he takes a minute to catch up to their pace;
*3 leaders on the road now: Patrick Gretsch (ARG), Ramunas Navardauskas (GRS), and Daniel Oss (BMC).

Gretsch struggles to stay with Nav and Oss, and is finally dropped at about 11.5k to go.
*2 leaders on the road now: Navardauskas and Oss;
The rest of the original breakaway group have let up their chase of the leaders;
With 10 km to go to the finish Navardauskas and Oss have over 2:00 on the chase group and 6:15 on the peloton;
Puccio jumps out of the chase group;

Onto the final climb…
~-6.5k: Duque launches a big attack from the chase group;
Under the 10k to go banner Blanco are pushing it at the front of the peloton;
-5k for the leaders who have 2:44 on 1st chaser Duque and 6:23 on the pel;
*Navardauskas pulls away from Oss under the -5k banner;
Bonnafond is out trying to catch up to Duque;

I doubt anyone will catch Navardauskas, but the other places are open;
In no-man’s land Gretsch looks like he’s pedaling backwards now;

Mountain classification leader Pirazzi passes Duque, Bonnafond, and passes under the 3k to go banner possibly 3rd on the road;
Oss is losing power as the incline kicks up a little;
A few kms behind, De Greef attacks out of the peloton with an AND rider;

The Lithuanian winner Navardauskas raises his arms as he caps the climb and rolls down to the finish for his second career GDT stage win.
Oss rolls in over a minute down, and Pirazzi manages a strong 3rd place almost 3 minutes down to collect some more KOM pts.
The remnants of the escape group trickle in one or two at a time.
The GC favorites finish in a big group almost 6 minutes behind Navardauskas.

A day for the Lithuanian
