STAGE 13 Recap and Results 2013 Giro d'Italia

Friday May 17, 2013
STAGE 13
254 kms  From Busseto to Cherasco   mostly flat, rolling last 50k
Clear at start, rain forecast, 19c; wind NNW 9 kph; Humidity 65%

The longest stage of this year’s edition starts without two pre-race favorites. Many people’s overall favorite, Bradley Wiggins of Team Sky, dropped out after losing time over several rainy stages. He seemed to fall behind on every descent on the parcours. He and defending champ, Ryder Hesjedal of Garmin-Sharp both became ill during the race. Wiggins was over five minutes off the leading pace and Hesjedal had lost over 32 minutes to race leader Vincenzo Nibali. After another grueling wet stage on Thursday both riders’ teams pulled the plug on their respective leaders. So Hesjedal’s shot at a repeat win is over, as is Wiggins’ hope for the Giro-Tour double.

Sky’s new team leader, Rigoberto Uran, is riding in 3rd place overall, trailing Nibali by 2:04 (with Robert Gesink and Michele Scarponi nipping at his heels just a few seconds back) but he would be much closer to Evans’ second place position of :41  behind the leader if he hadn’t been forced to drop back and help the struggling Wiggins earlier on. Every second is important as the riders will hit the big mountains tomorrow with two imposing climbs: the loooong haul to Sestriere and the big finish atop the category 1 Jafferau.

About 18 kms into stage 13 and the rain is starting to fall on the riders. I’m hearing that French sprinter Nacer Bouhanni has also abandoned the race (“fatigue”) after a good second place finish yesterday in Treviso.

Km 21: three men break away: Danilo Hondo (Radioshack), Giairo Ermeti (Androni Giocattoli), and Rafael Andriato (Vini Fantini). They quickly build a lead of over three minutes.

Four other riders bridge up to the breakaway.
7 leaders on the road are: Danilo Hondo (Radioshack), Giairo Ermeti (Androni Giocattoli), Rafael Andriato (Vini Fantini), Pablo Lastras (Movistar Team), Tobias Ludvigsson (Team Argos-Shimano), Nicola Boem (Bardiani), and Lars Bak (Lotto Belisol).

-211 kms: The 7 leaders have built a lead of 7:30.
-179 k: break lead is up to 12:00;
-142 k: lead holding at around 13:00;
After the feed zone at Alessandria the peloton start to chase. It doesn’t take long for them to cut the escapees’ advantage in half.
The high pace and the crosswinds have caused a split in the peloton. :30 separate the two groups;
Crash: Bobridge and Le Bon. Both up and chasing;

-90k: break lead at 3:40;
-73k: 2:40 lead;
The riders have been under sunshine for some time now.
Despite challenging the other teams to help chase at the front of the peloton, Omega Pharma are doing the lion’s share of the work again.
Gap down to 2:00
Another crash in the peloton: at least two Colombia riders down (Atapuma and Avila involved);

Lastras is one of the guys I thought about for today’s stage. I was surprised not to see him in any breaks until today. Always a man for the breakaway, the Spaniard won a stage in the 2011 Giro, and has won stages in all three Grand Tours during his lengthy career.  This stage will be a difficult one for the break to pull off since the sprinters’ teams are clearly keeping them in check in preparation for a sprint finale.

Cavendish took the points jersey yesterday. Ella Viviani (CAN) is the only sprinter with a chance of swiping it off his back today. He trails Cav by 23 points in that competition. He would need a win today and Cavendish would have to finish no higher than 20th for Viviani to claim the points lead. Good luck with that.

1st INT Sprint: 1.Andriato 2. Boem 3. Hondo 4. Lastras 5. Ermeti

-55k: Entering Alba under bright sunshine, the Colombia crash victims have rejoined the peloton.
After 200 kms of racing the escapees are holding a lead of 1:40 (despite the poor math of the broadcasters).

2nd INT Sprint: 1. Andriato 2. Boem 3. Ludvigsson 4. Ermeti 5. Hondo

-50K: Lead down to 1:14
Onto the Tre Cuni climb (cat. 3)
The escape group splits on the climb. Bak, Boem, and Lastras still lead.

Garzelli (BAR) and Rosa (AND) attack from the peloton. 4 follow: Pirazzi (BAR), Caruso and Paolini (KAT), and Proni (VIN).
The 6 new escapees catch some of the early break. Bak, Boem, and Lastras still lead.
-42.7 k: Peloton picks up that whole chase group on the climb. The pace drops some riders out the back.
Pirazzi puts in a big attack to the KOM line to pad his lead in that competition. There may be 1 point left for him after the three leaders summit.

km 217: KOM (Tre Cuni): 1. Boem 2. Bak 3. Lastras 4. Pirazzi

-35k: The OPQ-led peloton is just :25 behind the 3 leaders as they approach the descent.
Lastras leads Bak and Boem down the series of tight hairpin bends.
-25k: Leaders holding a :23 lead;
-19k: lead is :43
Proni (VIN) attacks out of the peloton possibly expecting a teammate to launch himself off his wheel, but no one follows. He sits up, a little unhappy.

They’re on t he steady incline to Barolo.
-16.4k: Bongiorno (BAR) jumps free;
-15.7k  Rabottini and Gatto (VIN) now proffer a dual attack, and Veuchelen (VCD) gets on with them;
The leaders are split on the uncategorized climb; Lastras still leading;
-15k: Other moves are coming from the peloton;
Cavendish is doing very well staying with the bunch on the climbs;

An 8-man chasing group has formed from the attacks; they join Lastras at the front with 13.5 kms to go to the finish. He has a teammate with him now: Herrada. One more uncategorized climb remains: the 2 ½ km long slope up to Narzole. The top of that last hill leaves a flat 6km run in to the finish.

*-10k: 9 leaders are: Bongiorno (BAR), Giampaolo Caruso (KAT), Azanza (EUS), Lastras and Herrada (MOV), Bak (LTB), Veuchelen (VCD), Rabottini and Gatto (VIN).
Lampre sprinter Roberto Ferrari is shed off the back;
Some of the other sprinters’ teams are trying to organize at the front of the chasing peloton;
-7k: Lead group sheds three on the climb: Rabottini, Lastras, and Bak; then Veuchelen drops back;
Coming to the top of the climb Azanza turns on the gas; then Caruso comes flying past and easily takes the KOM points;
-6.3k: Viviani and Nibali have jumped out of the pack behind the 5 leaders;
A RSL rider shoots up the road behind Nibali (Popo? Bennati?);

Caruso has built a huge gap to the 4-man chase group, who sit up as the peloton catches them;
*-4.4k Caruso leads alone, :14 ahead of a Vini Fantini rider (Gatto or Di Luca?), with a 50 or 60-man peloton chasing;
-2.5k: Caruso starting to look like dead meat on the long flat straight.
He is caught by the pack at -1.5k;

The big sprinters are on the front now, and inside -400m Viviani is the only one with a pair of teammates left to lead him out;
They start the sprint and Cavendish takes the lead, Nizzolo and Mezgec are closest to his wheel;
Brett Lancaster is up there again for Green Edge;

At this point I should not need to tell you who won.
