STAGE 16 Report and Results: 2013 Giro d'Italia

STAGE 16 Report/Recap
238 kms from Valloire to Ivrea
Weather: Partly cloudy early, becoming sunny; 15 c at the finish, warmer by late afternoon;

DNS: Wijnants (BLA)
Happy 28th birthday to Mark Cavendish who is still wearing the Red points jersey.

Stage 16 Profile

Several unsuccessful break attempts early on. Peloton still together after 30 kilometers.
Kelderman breaks off the front, but is reeled in.
He escapes again with 15 others.
-193 kms: At Km 45 the breakaway group is ahead by :46.
-184 k: The 16-man break has a 2:00 lead.

In the break are: Danny Pate (Sky), Wilco Kelderman (Blanco), Eros Capecchi (Movistar), Jose Herrada (Movistar), Grega Bole (Vacansoleil DCM), Tobias Ludvigsson (Argos), Christian Meier (Orica GreenEDGE), Stefano Pirazzi (Bardiani), Matteo Rabottini (Vini Fantini), Jackson Rodriguez (Androni), Emanuele Sella (Androni), Jose Serpa (Lampre-Merida), Rory Sutherland (Saxo-Tinkoff), Gorka Verdugo (Euskaltel), Pieter Weening (Orica GreenEDGE) and Ramunas Navardauskas (Garmin-Sharp).

On the cat. 1 climb up Mont Cenis, Di Luca (VIN), Damiano Caruso (CAN) & Atapuma and Chalapud (COL) join the break.
Zardini (BAR) and De Greef (LTB) are attempting to bridge up and are now within 20 seconds of the escape group.

km 65: Col du Mont Cenis (cat. 1):
1st KOM: 1. Rodriguez 2. Pirazzi 3. Sella or Serpa? 4. Chalapud 5. Verdugo 6. Di Luca

-170k: On top of Mont Cenis, Zardini and De Greef catch up to the leaders. The lead group is now 22 riders strong as they begin the descent.
Mont Cenis
 Damiano Caruso is the highest placed rider on GC in the break. He comes into the stage in 18th place, 9:57 off the lead. In my opinion he is the last man on GC who still has any shot of finishing in the top 10—and that would be a tall order. 3 ½ minutes behind Caruso is Kelderman, in 19th, and behind him the time splits just increase more and more.
-157 k: The riders cross the border back into Italy.
-131k: The gap is up to 4:20;
Sella, Kelderman and Navardauskas try to get away, but the other escapees bring them back;
Astana leads the peloton chase.
Saddlesores have forced American Taylor Phinney (BMC) to abandon the race.

-90k: The lead remains around four minutes;
Raindrops appear;
Sella tries another unsuccessful escape.
After about ten or fifteen minutes the break is under sunshine again, and leading by 5:04;
Astana picks up the pace at the front of the peloton. Katusha and Radioshack join in;

-65k: The lead is back to about 4:00 and dropping;
-60k: Lead is 3:13

-56k (km 183): Aglié:
1st INT: 1. Di Luca 2. Rabottini 3. Pirazzi 4. Meier 5. Zardini

-52k: Sutherland and Pate escape the break group. Meier joins them;
-50k: The break’s lead is under 2:00 now;
-47.6k: Di Luca accelerates; Caruso chases him down; the rest get on terms as well;
-46k: Rabottini jumps; Zardini, then others catch on;
-41k: Sella jumps out; Danny Pate is again eager to get on his wheel;

-40k: gap to peloton is now 1:30;
Navardauskas, Kelderman also get a gap on the rest of the escapees;
Kelderman, Sella and Pate have a :20 gap now;
-36.5k: Onto a cobbled section in Ivrea. They will do a loop and come back to Ivrea for the finish.

A 5-man chase group led by Herrada is behind the new 3-man lead group; With Herrada (MOV) are Navardauskas, Verdugo, Bole, and Pirazzi. This is now G2 on the road.
-30k: The leading 3 now have :24 to G2, and 1:30 to the peloton, who have caught the rest of the earlier escapees.

km 207-Bollengo:
2nd INT: 1. Sella 2. Pate 3. Kelderman 4. Bole 5. Pirazzi

-25k: G2 trail now by :07 as they approach the final climb to Andrate. The climb is a cat. 3; it is 6.25 kms long, maxes out at 13%, with about an 8% average gradient, and a 509-meter drop.. The descent is very technical.
-24.3k: G2 catch the 3 leaders; lead group is now 8 riders strong as they start the climb.
Pirazzi immediately jumps away. Kelderman and Verdugo try to chase him;
The peloton now trail by only :35.

Pirazzi is reeled in on the lower slope.
Herrada, Navardauskas and Verdugo take the lead;
Emanuele Sella and Fabio Duarte chasing;
Androni send another rider ahead of the peloton; Rosa?

*-21.5k: Scarponi jumps away suddenly. Nibali and the other GC guys chase him down; they get a gap on the rest of the peloton.
-21.2k: Herrada is pulling away at the front;
Other escapees are being picked up by the GC chase group.

Duarte and Pirazzi join the 3 leaders up front.
Sammy Sanchez starts to measure his foes; the descent should suit his abilities.
-20.2k: Pirazzi jumps out ahead of the other leaders, looking for more mountain points. They won’t let him go.
Verdugo has been dropped.

Duarte jumps, Pirazzi chases; they duel for the lead;
-19k: Pellizotti goes; Intxausti, then Scarponi and friends get on his wheel. With 1k to go to the summit they catch the leaders.

The final climb before the fast finish
-18.2k: Pirazzi jumps out in pursuit of the mt pts. The GC leaders could be content to let Pirazzi take the KOM points, but Carlos Betancur is not feeling so charitable. He
shoots out from the pack, flies past Pirazzi, takes the top points at the line, and is off by himself.

km 220: Andrato (cat. 2):
2nd KOM: 1. Betancur 2. Pirazzi 3. Scarponi 4. Majka 5. Kangert

The descent begins…on cobbles.
Sanchez gets up front for a good position.
On a sharp hairpin bend Betancur looks over his shoulder, sees Sanchez coming, and shakes his elbow beckoning the Basque to come up and work with him.
-16.2k: Sanchez passes Betancur on the twisty, cobbled decsent; Betancur gets on his wheel;
-13k: still flying downhill, Nibali catches up to Sanchez and Betancur;
Scarponi gets on board to make 4 leaders on the road;
-10.5k: Evans is chasing just behind, with 3 others;

The broadcaster here chooses some very inopportune times to go to break.

-8.7k: Niemiec and Scarponi lead the elite front group to the bottom of the descent.
-7.5k: Kangert (AST) and then Gesink accelerate off the front; Uran catches on;
But then Nibali leads the chase to bring them back.  Even with a teammate up there (Kangert), Nibali probably didn’t want to give Uran a chance to gain any time.
He has pulled Uran back, but the others still have a gap;

Attacks are coming fast and furious now.
Intxausti must have jumped away during the break and taken the lead.
Behind him are Kangert, Gesink, and Niemiec.

Santambrogio is in a group 2:01 behind! The high pace must have caught him out.

-5.7k: A couple of other moves, and then Sanchez attacks, trying to bridge up to the leading 4.
-5.5k Betancur jumps again after Sanchez!
-5.1k: Evans accelerates from behind;

The situation on the road now:
With 4.5k to go, Intxausti has a small gap up front. Right behind are Kangert, Gesink, and Niemiec. The GC group will not let Sanchez go, so the GC favorites are now chasing just behind the 4 leaders. With Sanchez are Nibali, Evans, Betancur, Scarponi, Uran, some other Astana rider, and Majka. Santambrogio is almost three minutes behind now. Now they’re saying 2:15.

-4.4k: Scarponi attacks; the rest follow on;
-3.3k Majka attacks;
-3k: Gesink, Kangert, and Niemiec are on the front now with Intxausti.

-1.8k: It’s all cobbles here. Sanchez accelerates again, and ahead of him Gesink’s chain has come off! Disaster for the Dutchman. He seems to have the worst luck in Grand Tours.

1300 meters to go: Niemiec has a tiny gap to Kangert and Intxausti;
Under the 1k banner: now the three leaders have slowed and are marking each other as the chasers are too far back to catch them; in fact, the GC favorites are marking each other as well, so they are not planning on catching the front three.
Pellizotti tries a move as the GC guys hit 1k to go;

Niemiec puts in a big kick with 400 meters to go; too much too soon I am afraid;
He’s reeled in and then Intxausti breaks!
Inside the final 200 meters Intxausti is in full sprint and leads Kangert and Niemiec over the finish line.

Navardauskas leads Cadel Evans and the rest of the GC chase group over the line 14 seconds later.
Beñat Intxausti gives Team Movistar it’s third stage win of this tour.
I have to admit, this is not the stage I would have expected him to take.
Santambrogio comes in with a group 2:24 behind the winner. He is the unfortunate big loser of the day. He drops from 4th place overall to 6th. Kiserlovski and Pozzovivo lost time, too.

No jerseys change hands.

It doesn’t look like Mattia Gavazzi made the cutoff time. In fact, he was disqualified for taking a tow on one too many cars.
--> He had been riding as the Maglia Nera, the last place rider overall, but the infractions of holding on to cars to help him up the mountains forced his disqualification.

A three-climber sprint
