STAGE 17 Race Recap; 2013 Giro d'Italia

Wednesday May 21, 2013

214k from Caravaggio to Vicenza; mostly flat;
Partly cloudy, 21 c (70 f)
Happy 37th birthday to Garmin’s Christian Vande Velde.

Two days ahead of the second anniversary of the tragic off-road death of Xavier Tondo, his friend and teammate, Beñat Intxausti remembered Team Movistar’s talented climber, by crossing his fingers in an “X” as he crossed the finish line for the win in yesterday’s stage 16. Intxausti had been with Tondo when he lost his life in a freak, tragic accident. Tondo had just recently won the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon before his death.

Snow on the Stelvio Pass
The news came today that a cold front is moving over northern Italy...

bringing more snow, rain, and cold temperatures to the region. Giro d’Italia race organizers, Michele Acquarone and RCS Sport are scrambling to plan alternate routes for the upcoming two stages in the Dolomites after Thursday’s climbing time trial stage to Polsa.

Stages 19 and 20 were supposed to be the resplendent powerhouse climbing stages, with eight big categorized climbs between them, including the 2618-meter high Passo Gavia, the 2758-meter high Stelvio Pass (the cima coppi of the race), and the 2059-meter Val Martello finish on Friday, and the Passos Costalunga (1745 m), San Pellegrino (1918 m), Giau (2236 m), Tre Croci (1805 m), and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo finish on Saturday at 2304 meters. Everything above 1500 meters is expected to get snow, so unfortunately it is unlikely that we will see many of those high peaks. They are monitoring the weather and updates are expected.

You can read my preview of today’s stage to Vicenza on the home page, or by clicking on the menu to the right.

Team Blanco appealed the finish time recorded for their leader, Robert Gesink yesterday after a mechanical issue (broken chain) inside the last 2 kms ruined his chances. They have correctly given him the same finish time as the group he was riding with since his mechanical occurred inside the final 3k. He has reclaimed 20 seconds, which puts him back in the top 10 ahead of Pozzovivo and Kangert.

Hayden Roulston (Radioshack) was unable to start today. Another victim of a respiratory infection resulting from the cold and rainy weather the peloton has endured so far in this year’s Giro.

Today’s 214-kilometer stage 17 is under way. A small group is trying to escape right off the bat:
Maxim Belkov (Katusha), Miguel Rubiano (Androni), Gert Dockx (Lotto Beilsol), and Luke Durbridge (OGE) have a :20 gap after 14 kms. None of these guys are any threat to the overall General Classification, so they may be allowed to go.  Remember Belkov won stage 9.

Stage 17 Profile
Rubiano was my pick for this stage. Let’s see what he can do for his team today. Androni Giocattoli riders have been in several breaks so far, initiating aggressive attacks, but the wildcard Italian team has yet to pull off a stage win. Team Colombia is the other wildcard who have not won a stage yet.

-190k: In the last 10 kms the 4 escapees have built their lead to 4:40!
-175k: Gap hovering around 4:00;
The weather is very nice today.
-165k: the gap is 3:18;
-140k: the gap is still around 3:00+;

-112k: About halfway through the stage, the leaders go through the feed zone ahead of the bunch by 2:22;
The gap increases again until Omega Pharma pick up the pace and start chipping away at it. They must believe their man, Cavendish can take a sprint win here today.
Argos Shimano and Movistar assist in the pace-making.

The four leaders on the road again are: Rubiano, Belkov, Durbridge and Dockx.
-90k: the lead is 4:26;
-82k: Rosa, wheel change;
-80k: the lead is now 5:

Hmm. Matt Goss, who has been ailing for days, was listed as “Did Not Finish” yesterday, but the announcers keep insisting he is still in the race, and in it for the win.

Several sprinters, including the ones with some climbing ability are very interested in this stage.

-70k: The peloton has just picked up the pace a bit, and the gap is 4:57;
-64k:
1st INT: 1. Belkov 2. Rubiano 3. Dockx 4. Durbridge 5. Cavendish

-60k: gap is 4:16;
-57.5k: Stetina, wheel change;
-51.1k: Trofimov, wheel change;
-50k: the gap is down to 3:05.

 -40k: The gap to the peloton is 2:52;

2nd INT: 1. Belkov 2. Dockx 3. Durbridge 4. Rubiano 5. Cavendish

Cav is grabbing sprint points wherever he can. You think he learned a lesson after losing the Maglia Rosso to Joaquin Rodriguez last year by a single point?

-36k: Both Carlton Kirby and Daniel Lloyd, the English announcers who have been plugging Matt Goss for this stage all day, just now discovered that the ailing Aussie retired from the race yesterday.  I was wondering about that. Since they are calling the race, I trust they will remember to read the daily race results before going on the air from now on.

The peloton is closing the gap down as they approach the final 30kms. With 34 k to go the escapees’ lead is 1:30;
-33k: the road turns right and narrows significantly;
-30k: after 4 ½ hours of racing the gap is at 1:19;

-28.4k: The peloton, now led by Vini Fantini, pick up Belkov from the break.
The other three leaders motor on ahead with 5k left before the climb.
The riders in the peloton are fighting for position along the narrow, twisting local roads.

Dockx, Rubiano and Durbridge are holding a 1:05 lead with 25k to go.
The 3 leaders hold a minute lead going onto the climb. Dockx has been dropped by the other two.
*Vini Fantini send 2 riders off the front of the bunch on the narrow lower slope: Di Luca and Proni. Lampre lead the chase for Pozzato, with Astana close by.

The late climb is another good launch pad
*-21.3k up front, Rubiano drops Durbridge like a bad habit.
Di Luca puts in a big acceleration in pursuit of the leaders.

-20.7k for Rubiano, Di Luca sails past the fading Dockx. He passes Durbridge 200 meters further up, and now trails Rubiano by :25.

Is my pick, Rubiano going to make it? It’s not looking too promising right now, as several teams are doing well carrying their sprinters through the steeper sections of the climb.
Inside 20 k to go: The climb is starting to put the hurt on some sprinters’ legs. Cav is struggling now. He’s not getting much help from his team now.

*Giovanni Visconti attacks the pack as Di Luca catches up to Rubiano up front.
The hill starts to level out near the top.
*Visconti gets on with Rubiano and Di Luca to form a new three-man lead group.
Visconti keeps accelerating with Rubiano on his wheel, but Di Luca is being distanced at the moment;

The chasing bunch is down to about 25 riders. They pick up Di Luca before the summit;
Visconti gets a :15 gap on Rubiano approaching the KOM line;
1st KOM: 1. Visconti 2. Rubiano 3. Kangert

*Visconti speeds on ahead by himself; he goes under the 15k to go banner with a lead of :33; The Cavendish group is a further minute behind now.

Can Visconti stay away and take his second stage win of the race? He may hope so, but I doubt it. I don’t see the Cav group getting back either. But I have certainly been proven wrong before…

-12k: Rubiano is picked up by the chasing bunch.
-9.6k Agnoli jumps out of the GC chase group, followed by Kelderman, Pellizotti, Sanchez, and someone else; they are eventually reeled back in;

Nizzolo,  Henao, and local-boy Marcato make up a chase group somewhere on the road; Probably behind the elite GC chasing group that includes Nibali and Evans;
The GC chasing group is not really forming an organized chase, rather they have been chasing down each other’s sporadic attacks, and then easing up as they regroup.

It looks like another Blanco attack via Wilco Kelderman, but he is not getting away;
They are chasing :22 behind the leader Visconti with 6 kms to go;
Azanza (EUS) attacks them;
-5.8 k: Pellizotti attacks out of the GC bunch, followed by Kelderman, and they catch Azanza.;

*With 5k to go Visconti is maintaining a :23 lead. Impressive riding again from the Italian Movistar rider; His team has been consistently impressive throughout the Giro.

4k to go: Visconti has actually added a second to his lead! The chase group’s disorganized punch-and-go pattern is working against them. They do seem to have a knack for timing the catch though.

3k to go: Visconti’s lead is :20.

Sacha Modolo (Bardiani) is leading the strung out chasers; Francis Mourey (FDJ) and Lampre’s Pippo Pozzato get on his wheel and they briefly have a gap, but are soon reeled in;

2k to go: Visconti’s lead is still :20.

Desperate moments for him as he can smell a second stage win now;
I’m not sure he is still pedaling at the same pace anymore; he’s got to be tired; but he’s holding that lead…
-1.7k: He is forced to slow significantly on a very sharp bend; the rest will have to slow here, too;

Puncture, Betancur! He’s inside 3k to go, so he should get the same time as the group he was with.

*Under the flame rouge Visconti is still leading by :21. He is not going to be caught!
Movistar are hogging the stage wins.

Modolo is leading the chase home;
With 500 meters to go, a huge grin sneaks onto Visconti’s face. He knows he’s got it. What a great ride again from the 30-year old; first in the mountains, now on the flats.

He’s all teeth as he rounds the last bend at -200m.
After more than 5:15:00 in the saddle, Giovanni Visconti throws his arms in the air as he crosses the line for his second win in four days--and registers three in a row for Team Movistar. Not too shabby.
Giovanni Visconti wins again

He attacked near the top of the climb with almost 20k to go and quickly built up a lead that he would hold till the end. He basically time-trialed himself home.
