STAGE 18 Recap and Results, 2013 Giro d'Italia

Thursday May 23, 2013
Individual Time Trial 20.6 kilometers, climbing
Partly cloudy, 11 c; rain on later starters; cold at the summit;

 A reminder of today’s profile:

Stage 18 ITT Profile
The route overall rises with an average gradient of about 5.4%, so it’s no Alpe d’Huez. You can see from the profile that it starts with a relatively flat kilometer-and-a-half and then climbs for about 7kms on a 6.6% average grade. The course then eases up for almost 5k before rising again to the top for another 7k stretch at the same average gradient as the first section of the climb. Those last kilometers provide the steepest gradients of the route, up to about 10% (at 5k to go), with some of the steeper sections close to the top. This means that the riders will have to gauge their efforts very carefully, and leave enough gas in the tank for the big finish...

Miguel Minguez of Euskatel takes an early lead with a finish time of 48:55 over the 20.6-kilometer long course.
Orica-Green Edge TT specialist Svein Tuft did not excel on this hill and finished with a time of 50:44. That is currently 4th place, but will be much lower by the time the rest of the riders come home.

Steven Cummings of BMC comes in with a new leading time of 47:08; 1:47 faster than Minguez’s time;

The final 3k to the finish
Equipment is always a major consideration in the chrono. Aerodynamic skin suits are de rigueur on long and flat TT’s, but are more a matter of preference on climbing courses. With a climb that is not very steep, like today’s, some will opt for the skin suit, others will not. Helmets, handlebars, tires, and of course the bikes themselves all offer variable options for riders in terms of weight, aerodynamics, comfort and friction.

You may recall that some riders swapped their bikes out during the long stage 8 TT. A road bike generally will not give the same aerodynamic results as a TT bike. On climbs a road bike usually is preferable. A TT bike will not offer any advantage to a rider who crawls uphill at a snail’s pace, but a faster climber may find it preferable on a course that is not too steep. On a mixed course switching bikes can be effective to maximize the effort over different terrain. The time it takes to switch bikes must prove to be worth it in order to defend employing that tactic.  I have a feeling today that most, if not all of the riders will pick one bike or the other and stay on it.

Tobias Ludvigsson of Argos Shimano is good against the clock. He comes in with the second-best time of 47.51. All these times will tumble down the standings later as the top guys come in.
Boaro finishes just behind Ludvigsson for third at the moment.
Movistar’s Eros Capecchi comes in with a new best time of 46:55; the first time under 47 minutes. Cummings moves down to 2nd.

King of the mountains, Stefano Pirazzi missed his start time by FOUR MINUTES. I don’t know what happened to him, but the clock starts ticking when your official start time comes up, so his finish time is abysmal.

Dario Cataldo (Sky) sets a new best time, and then Stef Clement of Blanco bests him. Clements time is 46:05; Cataldo trails him by five seconds.

Sammy Sanchez sets a new best time at the intermediate time check: 17 seconds faster than Dario Cataldo.  It’s starting to rain on him.

Michele Scarponi takes the start as Danilo Di Luca finishes with the 3rd best time at the moment.

It is continuing to rain lightly on the course. Rain is of course a disadvantage to anyone as the wet road is a more frictional and dangerous surface, and visibility decreases. On a climbing time trial it won’t be as dangerous to the riders as a faster course would be, where crashes can derail an entire tour.

Damiano Caruso of Cannondale sets a new best time, 16 seconds faster than Clement.

*The current stage standings: 1. Caruso 2. Clement 3. Cataldo 4. Di Luca 5. Duarte

Fabio Felline puts in a surprisingly strong result of 47:27. Not going to be top ten or anything, and no one else is going to mention it, but good for a rider of his abilities.

Cadel Evans takes the start. This is a crucial stage for the BMC veteran. He comes in 2nd overall on GC, 1:26 behind Vincenzo Nibali. Rigoberto Uran is in 3rd, 1:20 behind Evans. Historically an excellent TT’er, Evans will need to summon the best performance he can muster if he wants to gain any time on Nibali.

Wind now combines with the rain to make the higher slopes all the more challenging.

*Sammy Sanchez comes across the line with a new best time; he’s in at 45:27, :22 faster than Caruso.
All the riders are either on the road or finished now.
The current stage standings: 1. Sanchez 2. Caruso 3. Clement 4. Cataldo 5. Di Luca

*Rigoberto Uran goes through the intermediate time check in 24th place! He is :48 down on the leading time. The Colombian could be in danger of surrendering his podium spot to Scarponi if he can’t make it up on the wetter, second part of the course.

Pozzovivo crosses the finish in 9th place, 1:13 down.
Scarponi is riding well. He is taking the curves with caution, considerably slower than he would on dry roads. We’ll have to see if he can preserve this impressive time and take the 3rd podium spot away from Uran.

Cadel Evans goes through the INT at 22:00, way down in 28th place! That’s a full minute behind Scarponi’s best time at that point. Evans is known for finishing fast on courses like this, but that is a surprisingly slow time for the first half from the former World Champion.

Here comes Rober Gesink for Blanco. He finishes, well, the director decided to cut away just before he crossed the line, so we’ll have to wait for the results… They do that a lot on this new upstart network.

We were about to get Nibali’s Intermediate time but they chose to cut away again just as he got to the line.  The director must be very jumpy today.

Anyway, Nibali had the best time at the INT, I think by about 25 seconds or so.

Rafal Majka is battling Carlos Betancur for the white jersey. He comes home with the currently third best time of 45:53.

Betancur’s run up to the line is a nail biter as the seconds tick off to see if he can hold the white jersey. He finishes at 46:01, just 8 seconds behind his rival, Majka. I think he will have lost his lead in the Young Rider competition by just two or three seconds.

We have not seen a single frame of Santambrogio. I did not hear anything—speak of the devil. Here he comes up to the finish, on camera for the first time today. Well, they cut away again, but they cut back to him as he crosses the line in 20th, at 47:02. He’ll drop another couple of spots on GC.

I’m not sure the producers know much about cycling. We’ve suffered through many terrible cutaways during critical action over the last several stages.

Niemiec comes in at 46:25.
His team leader Scarponi lost a little bit over the second half and comes in 3rd.
The rain has definitely given the late finishers a disadvantage.
Uran made up some very good time over the second half and finishes 5th after being 24th at the INT.

Evans coughs up over a minute and a half.

Nibali comes up and wins the stage by almost a whole minute! I hope this will quiet all his critics who said he should win a stage in order to be a “true” Giro champ.

Sammy Sanchez shakes his head in disappointment from the leader’s chair. The three gold studs in his right ear lose a little shine. He actually seems temporarily immobilized by the stunning loss. He still sits in the chair with an almost catatonic expression.

Nibali’s performance here probably sealed his Giro d’Italia win. If he can get through the two Dolomite stages without incident—and there is every indication that he should—the Giro should be his.
