STAGE 3 Preview 2013 Giro d'Italia

STAGE 3 PICKS (Monday May 6):

From the look of the profile it looks like a good breakaway opportunity. The tricky descent could mean the better descenders might duke it out, some trying to recover time lost to Wiggins in the stage 2 TTT, like Sammy Sanchez, Cadel Evans, Robert Kiserlovski, Ryder Hesjedal, Giampaolo Caruso or Michele Scarponi. Wiggins has great support in the technical, twisty descents with Italian National Time Trial Champion Dario Cataldo and Colombians Rigoberto Uran and Sergio Henao, all of whom are strong up and down the hills.

With some punchy climbs toward the end of the next few stages it is also possible the top contenders will just mark each other and allow a break to get away. I'm looking for OGE's Peter Weening, OPQ's Michael Golas, or Hesjedal's Garmin teammate and Lithuanian TT Champ Ramunas Navardauskas to try something.

If some of the stronger climbing sprinters make it over the last hills they might get a shot. Maybe Mattia Gavazzi (AND), Oscar Gatto (VIN) or Movistar's Giovanni Visconti?

Likely pick: Ryder Hesjedal or Sammy Sanchez
Dark-horse pick: Anthony Roux (FDJ), from a break.
My pick: Peter Weening
