About 10km into stage: Break (7): Bellemakers (LTB) [debut tour], J. Rodriguez (AND), Wauters (VCD), Pantano (COL) [ex-track rider, debut tour], Boaro (TST), and Taborre (VIN), De Backer (ARG);

Report of wet roads toward the end;

1st INT Sprint: 1.Taborre;

-145k lead = -6:34

 clouds parting on latter half of course, roads starting to dry; still dry where cyclists are now;

~ -115k: slow-speed CRASH Tiralongo in feed zone, changes bike and rejoins;

De Backer takes 2nd INT Sprint;

Onto 1st climb--San Mauro Cilento [Colli di San Pietro, 25m-551m] (cat. 2):

*De Backer dropped from lead group;

-73k break has - 4:42 to Peloton;

Sprinters (Cav…) off the back of the Pel by about 2:00 now;

-70.4k Attack Pantano, Rodriguez, Boaro follows, others get back on, Boaro repeated accellerations, but Wauters pips him at the summit, Taborre 3rd; Ldrs split on descent, rejoin halfway down;

Peloton summit 1st climb (-68k) at +3:42

-58k: Paolini (KAT) and Colbrelli? (COL) off the front of the Pel. on descent; eventually pulled back;


~ -53k:* Taborre jumps off the front and goes alone; Long way to go…

-47k CRASH Diego Rosa, bike chg;

Taborre drilling it out front along the Amalfi Coast;

46k CRASH: Colbrelli, by a concrete road barrier;

-42 k: Taborre has 1:00 on chasers, and 3:40 to Peloton;

-36k: Taborre out front alone has 1:05 on 5-man chase grp, and 3:00 on Peloton;

-35k: *ONTO early part of long final double-climb to Sella Di Catona (cat. 3) (12m-> 335m, then 2.5k down to 285m, and up to 587m in about 6.7 k;

OPQ join Sky and KAT at front of Pel;

-30k Taborre suffering up front a little; (G2 +1:10, Pel +1:35);

AST drive for a bit at front of Pel;

GRS doing some strong pace-work… putting the hurt on, causing splits; Nibali, Scarponi, follow closely;

Out front, Taborre slowing;

Navardauskas veers off into ditch trying to avoid a moto on a curve, dropped by chase 3;

-27k: Attack NIBALI; creates elite 8-man chase group (w/ Scarponi, Hesjedal, Wiggins...);

Herrada off the back;

-26k: *Attack HESJEDAL, he catches and passes Taborre;

Hesjedal new leader on the road;

Santambrogio and Evans join elite chase group (now about 19 or 20-strong), all pacing themselves together, letting Hesjedal go…

-23.6k: Chasers pick up Hesjedal;

Also present in lead group: Gesink, Uran, Morabito, Kruijswijk,

-22K: Lead group swells as others catch on, at least 30 or 35 strong now;


-20 k: Visconti, riding in the blue climber's jersey, is allowed to take Mt points; Followed by Aru and Agnoli;

-17.3k: Agnoli attacks on begginning of descent, followed by Hesjedal, then Paolini... RH to the front;

-15.5k: Santaromita (?) (BMC) and Santambrogio catching on to 3 leaders, other chasers closing in, stretched out over the technical descending switchbacks;

Scarponi closing in;


-12.3k Betancur (ALM) off the road, remounts…

Siutsou and Machado seen riding together somewhere behind;

-10k: Hesjedal, Agnoli and Paolini still leading a strung-out group down the through the hairpins into town;

Over a little rise before final descent and Agnoli takes over for RH; lead group is about 19 or 20-strong;

-8.6k Kangert off his bike grabbing his thigh;

-7k descent to finish:


*-6.7k: PAOLINI big attack up front, goes alone, quickly gets :06;

More casualties off the side of the road...

-4k Paolini putting on a desct. clinic;


*Big crash on front of chase: Kruijswijk and Gesink (BLA), Millar, Scarponi front wheels slipped out from under on a hairpin; Stortoni gives MS his bike;

Paolini still pounding away out front;

RH and VN flying behind with group of about 15;

Paolini had it from the moment he attacked. He points to his Aero helmet, suggesting the decision to wear it must have aided his success. Or is he pointing to head and heart?
