Stage 8 Report and Results - Ax 3 Domaines 2013 Tour De France

Stage 8 from Castres to Ax 3 Domaines - 195k;
High mountains (flat first 125k, then 2 big climbs);
Weather: sunny, hot (32 c/90 f), very light wind;
188 riders started.

Stage 8 Profile. Two big Pyrenean climbs.

I mentioned on stage 5 that none of the “big three” sprinters had won a stage yet, while they had six between them by stage 6 last year. Well, Mark Cavendish, André Greipel and Peter Sagan must have been listening, because 1-2-3 they each won a stage consecutively over the last three days. They did not leave much scraps for the others, and two talented fast men won’t get any more at all. Sprinters Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ) and Alexander Kristoff (Katusha)** has both retired from the race due to injuries sustained in the first week. Now that all three of the big names have a stage each, they have some mollification, and it is time the climbers get their shot.
**UPDATE: The report on Alexander Kristoff abandoning was false. The Katusha sprinter is still in the race.

They get their shot today on the road to Ax-3-Domaines; except for the few who did not make it past the first, crash-filled week. Lotto team leader Jurgen Van Den Broeck, Garmin road veteran Christian Vande Velde, and Astana lieutenant Janez Brajkovic and domestique Fredrik Kessiakoff were four of the ten casualties of the first week.

Their teams will go on. Astana still has Fuglsang, though the absence of Brajkovic and Kessiakoff will be a handicap. Lotto turns their attention away from General Classification contention and toward stage wins, with focus on giving Greipel whatever opportunities remain.  Garmin have an injured Hesjedal, but other options exist with Andrew Talansky, Dan Martin and others.

Stage 8 heads south, toward Spain
Chris Froome goes into stage 8 as the best placed rider of the overall favorites. He is 8 seconds behind the leader, Daryl Impey. Froome has the following advantages over the other favorites: Alberto Contador :06; Ryder Hesjedal and Andrew Talansky :14; Alejandro Valverde :17; Cadel Evans and Tejay Van Garderen :23; Joaquim Rodriguez :25; Bauke Mollema :34; Thibaut Pinot :39; Jakob Fuglsang :53; Igor Anton 1:21; and of course, Robert  Gesink is out of it at nine minutes back.

French police spent two hours this morning searching the Radioshack-Leopard team camper. This after Radioshack’s older Schleck brother, Frank, learned that the team would be dumping him, just as he is ready to come back from his suspension for the adverse Xipamide finding. Radioshack is fulfilling its sponsorship commitment this year, but Trek will be taking over as lead sponsor for the team in 2014.

TO THE ACTION:

Km0:  At the drop of the flag Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil) attacks.
He is quickly joined by Jean-Marc Marino of Sojasun. Rudy Molard (Cofidis) and Christophe Riblon (Ag2R) are trying to bridge the gap up to the 2 leaders...

Riblon won on top of today’s mountaintop finish in 2010 on a very similar stage. He is trying his luck again today. I had a feeling he might.

Km11: Riblon and Molard have hooked up with Hoogerland and Marino to form a four-man lead group. They have a lead over the peloton of 2:30 already.

Km20 (175k to go): The break extends their lead to 7:30.
Km26.5: KOM 1 category 4 Côte de Saint-Ferréol (2.2k at 5.4%):
1.    Molard

-150k: The gap is 9 minutes.
-120k: the lead has come down a bit, to 8:20;

Orica GreenEdge are leading the chase at the front of the peloton, with some help from Team Sky.

Matteo Bono (Lampre) has abandoned the Tour due to wounds suffered in the early stage 7 crash. His teammate Malori dropped out yesterday.

-85k: the 4 leaders advantage is down to 6:00;

-75.5k: INT (intermediate sprint) - Quilan:
1. Hoogerland  2. Marino  3. Molard  4. Riblon  5. Greipel  6. Sagan  7. Cavendish  8. Van Poppel  9. Flecha  10. Chavanel  11. De Gendt  12. Westra  13. Sabatini  14. Boeckmans  15. Bodnar

The lead is under 5:00 now.
Riblon comes into the stage 4:49 down in the GC. The peloton are not eager to give him too much rope.
-70k: 4:54 is the gap to the peloton with 125 kilometers ridden.

-60k: the 4 leaders pass through the gorgeous gorges of St. George with a dwindling lead of 4:16. They are getting close to the foothills that lead to the Hors Categorie Col de Pailheres. The Pailheres is the highest pass in this year’s race at 2001 meters high.

-55k: gap is 3:30;
-50k: 2:30;

-46k: Riblon, on the front of the break group, is frustrated with the lack of cooperation on the climb. He gestures emphatically with his right elbow, urging the others to come up and do a turn. He has been doing most of the work. The others may have seen the drastic drop in their lead and given up hope. Riblon still wants to push on, but they will all surely be caught before the summit. I doubt he will see a repeat of 2010. I would say that any escapee would need at least two or three minutes advantage over this summit in order to hold the lead up the final climb.

The HC Col de Pailheres profile
Early on the climb, Riblon accelerates and the others cannot keep up.
Riblon is the lone leader on the road, with the peloton just over a minute back, and Hoogerland, Molard, and Marino chasing in between.

-42.6k: Molard is caught by the peloton.
*-40k: Robert Gesink (BEL) attacks the peloton; Marino is picked up by the peloton.
Gesink, as I mentioned, is nine minutes down, so he will be allowed to go.

Riblon is slowly increasing his lead!
Will he make me eat my words? I still say, no.

*-39k: Thomas Voeckler (EUC) attacks. No surprise there.

The situation:
Christophe Riblon (ALM) leads, almost one-third of the way up the penultimate climb;
Robert Gesink is chasing him about 44 seconds back;
Thomas Voeckler is the second chaser, 1:05 behind Riblon;
The peloton with the GC favorites is 1:29 behind the leader, Riblon.

I do not recall seeing Hoogerland getting picked up, but I guess he’s gone;
-37k: Damiano Cunego (LAM) has been dropped by the peloton;
then Ryder Hesjedal (GRS) pops, and Mikel Astarloza (EUS) and Rein Taaramae (COF), too. Arnold Jeannesson (FDJ), Edouard Vorganov (KAT) and others are also struggling off the back.

*-36.4k: Nairo Quintana (MOV) attacks.
Within 40 seconds Quintana catches up to Voeckler.

The contrast of their riding styles, as they climb together now, is extreme. Quintana is calm in the saddle, looking poised and fresh, his face composed, eyes hidden behind shades, mouth closed, revealing nothing; Voeckler is like a jack-in-the-box, popping up and down on the pedals, his body rocking all over, and his face is a study in agony, no sunglasses, eyes wincing, mouth wide open, and all sweat.  They are 7k from the summit.

-36k: It does not take long for the Colombian Movistar climber to drop the French hope, Voeckler. In no time Voeckler is scooped up by the chasing peloton.

Riblon still leads.
This mountain is decimating the field.

-35k: Voeckler has been shed out the back of the pack now;
-34k: Quintana must have passed Gesink because now he is closing in on the leader, Riblon.
*Yes, the peloton are picking up Gesink now; and Quintana has caught Riblon;
Quintana very quickly disposes of Christophe Riblon, who has been in the lead for the last 150 kilometers.
Nairo Quintana is the new leader on the road.

*4k to the summit: Pierre Rolland (EUC) puts in an attack. A lot of KOM points are waiting at the top of this HC climb: 25 pts for first over the summit, 20 for second, down to 2 for tenth; not to mention a 5000 Euro prize for the first one at the top.

Gesink is dumped out the back of the peloton.
*Igor Anton (EUS) has attacked, too.

-32k: Rolland passes Riblon.
-31.3k: Anton passes Riblon.
-31k: The 30-man peloton, led by Sky, catch Riblon.

Froome is riding 5th wheel, behind 4 teammates. Valverde and Contador are right behind Froome.
-30.5k: Andreas Klöden (RSL) is dropped, along with Tejay Van Garderen (BMC) and Peter Velits (OPQ), too. If Cadel Evans is still in the front group, then he is all alone, out of teammates. (I think I see him riding about tenth wheel).

Nairo Quintana (Movistar) on the attack
Quintana has one mile to go to the summit, and leads on the road;
Chase 1 is Rolland, at about :37 back;
Chase 2 is Anton, at :47;
The peloton is at :59 back; led by Sky, then Movistar and Saxo T.

That is Evans riding tenth wheel in the peloton. Jakob Fuglsang (AST) and Andy Schleck (RSL) are close behind Evans. Also present are J-Rod and Moreno (KAT), Jean Christophe Peraud, Romain Bardet, and John Gadret (ALM), and I think that’s Gesink (BEL) still up there, too.
Nicolas Roche (TST), Andrew Talansky (GRS), Jose Serpa (LAM), Bauke Mollema (BEL) and Haimar Zubeldia (RLS) are fighting to stay in contact at the back of the peloton;

30 k to go: Quintana is 1k from the summit, a 5000-Euro prize, and the temporary lead in the KOM competition, with the 25 points he’ll earn up there.
It is very windy up here.
It looks like 2 or 3 riders have fallen off the back of the pack.

Quintana is the first man over the KOM line at the 2001-meter summit.
Rolland goes over next at +:29; that puts him back into temporary lead of the mountains competition.
Anton is next at +:58;
The Peloton summit at +1:03;

Km 166: KOM 2  HC-cat Col de Pailheres (15.3k at 8%):
1. Quintana  2. Rolland  3. Nieve  4. Kennaugh  5. Porte  6. Froome  7. Valverde  8. Rui Costa  9. Rogers  10. Ten Dam (does that make 100 Dam?)

Quintana is not riding the tactically best descent, which is full of steep, tight switchbacks. He’s holding the lead as he flies downhill. He takes in some food, as many others are probably doing now. Can he hold the lead all the way up the final mountain?

Rolland is trying to catch Quintana;
Anton probably sat up for the peloton, but may try something again on the last climb.
Sky continue to drive a hard pace down the fast descent.

Quintana is first under the 20k to go banner;
Rolland goes through :27 later;
the peloton go under at +:45;

It looks like Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) has fallen off pace a little, he is :18 behind the peloton. He needs to work on his descending ability.
Of course, 150 other riders are somewhere all over the road behind them.

Igor Anton is tucked in behind the Sky train at the front of the peloton;

-15k: Quintana leads Rolland by about :24; he leads the peloton by :39.
-12.5k: :22 to Rolland, :34 to the peloton;

-10k: Quintana has a last bite of food, and turns to see Rolland coming up right behind him; so he turns on the jets again, demoralizing Rolland, and leaving him behind again.
Kennaugh and Porte continue to set the high pace at the front of the peloton, which now numbers around 2-dozen riders;

Profile of the final climb to the finish
*Onto the final climb:
Michal Kwiatkowski (OPQ) in the white jersey, and John Gadret (ALM—a dark horse I had high hopes for today) are starting to pedal backwards off the rear of the pack.

Van Garderen and Morabito (BMC) have been shot-put out the back;
*-7.2k: Rolland is reeled in;
-7.1k: Kennaugh pulls off the front, leaving just Richie Porte to lead his captain, Froome up the rest of the climb. He could do some serious damage to the pack.

-6.8k: Evans has cracked. He is back with Talansky and Schleck now. Rolland and…I think that’s Jeremy Roy, are back there too.
The main chasing bunch is down to 11 riders;
Peraud and Rogers still struggle in no man’s land;

-6.5k (4 miles to go): Quintana still leads by :20;
6k to go: That front chase group is down to 5: Porte and Froome (SKY), Contador and Kreuziger (SAX), and Alejandro Valverde (MOV).
J-Rod (KAT) and Ten Dam (BEL) chase behind;

Up front, Quintana looks over his shoulder and sees the Froome, Contador, Valverde group approaching fast;

*5.2k to go: Richie Porte continues to push the typical high SKY pace, and the 5 chasers are stringing out as they catch Nairo Quintana. If Quintana can stay with the group, then each of the three teams represented there will have 2 riders to push up to the summit.

Suddenly Porte’s high cadence is distancing the others. Even Froome is working hard to keep up. Porte could get the win.

*Quintana has gotten onto Porte’s wheel, as Froome goes on ahead himself. (This is that “putting the hammer down” I was talking about in my preview for this stage.) Kreuziger is next closest, several bike lengths back, and his captain, Contador, is struggling to stay with him. Valverde is on Contador’s wheel.

-5k: Froome is pulling away up front. He has about :18 lead at 5k.
Evans is seen going under the 5k to go banner about 1:30 behind Froome.

*-4.5k: Porte drops Valverde and Quintana.

Kreuziger is helping Contador up the last few kms of the climb. Contador actually looks awful on the bike. From here, if he doesn’t recover, he could lose a lot of time.

Richie Porte is cruising up, about :30 behind his captain, who leads with 2 miles to go.
Ten Dam blows by Contador and Kreuziger. Yeah, my pick, Contador is in trouble.

The leader, Froome hits the line at 3k to go, :45 ahead of his teammate Porte.
Valverde is third on the road just over a minute behind Froome.
Kreuziger leads Contador over about 20 seconds after Valverde. Along with them are Nieve and Mollema!

2k to go for Froome.
The climbers squeeze through the enveloping crowds like they’re unzipping a mob of maniacs.

Km193.5: KOM 3 cat-1 Ax-3 Domaines (7.8k at 8.2%):
1. Froome  2. Porte  3. Valverde  4. Mollema  5. Ten Dam  6. Nieve

Froome has barriers now to protect him from the throng, as he closes in on 1k to go.
Porte is a few hundred meters behind him. Valverde is working hard about 1:03 back; third place would not be a bad result today, he just wants to limit his losses.

The lithe Sky climber sprints through the curving barriers to the line, no one in his rear-view mirror.

Chris Froome wins stage 8 of the Tour De France!
He also wins the maillot jaune, and the king of the mountains lead.

He is the second rider from Africa to win the yellow jersey in the last two days. A sort of double-déja-vu here, as first, his mate Wiggins took the yellow jersey on the first mountaintop finish last year (stage 7); and second, because of the one-two punch. Richie Porte finished next after his captain today. Last year Wiggins was the leader and when he won again in the stage 9 time trial to Besancon, Froome finished right behind him. It was not until stage 11 however, on the demanding stage to La Toussuire, when Froome moved up behind his captain into second overall on GC. Wiggins held the lead from stage 7 until the end in Paris two weeks later, and Froome remained second from stage 11 to the finish. The only other rider to wear the yellow jersey in 2012 was Fabian Cancellara, for the first six stages.

Nairo Quintana, despite the banged up knee, takes over the lead in the young riders competition from Michal Kwiatkowski, and is judged the most combative rider.

Richie Porte moves into second overall behind his teammate Froome. Valverde is third.
Laurens Ten Dam did a great ride to finish with a surprisingly impressive fifth place.

Team Sky are definitely the big winners today. Putting their two top riders into first and second overall, and just generally dominating every inch of the mountains. They kept a high pace that dropped most of the field before they even reached the final climb. If today’s performances are indicative of what is to come, then this could end up being a blow out Tour, with Froome destroying the field worse than Wiggins did last year.

Stage winner and new race leader, Chris Froome of Sky Procycling

This is some of the damage Chris Froome, Richie Porte, and Peter Kennaugh caused on the climb up to Ax-3 Domaines today:

Alejandro Valverde now trails Froome by 1:25;
Bauke Mollema trails Froome by 1:44
Alberto Contador by 1:51;
J-Rod by 2:31;
Andrew Talansky and Dan Martin: 2:48;
Igor Anton: 3:06;
Michal Kwiatkowski: 3:25 to Froome;
Jakob Fuglsang: 3:27;
Jean Peraud 3:29

And the big losers:

Andy Schleck: trails Froome by 4:00;
Cadel Evans and Daniel Moreno: 4:36;
Pierre Rolland: 4:57;
John Gadret: 5:09;
Andreas Klöden: 5:26;
Thibaut Pinot: 6:39
Ryder Hesjedal: 8:29;
Przemyslaw Niemiec: 9:19;
Daniel Navarro: 10:30;
Tejay Van Garderen: 12:38;
Damiano Cunego (who said the other day that he hoped to go for a high overall finish): 15:43;
Robert Gesink: 16:50.

Really, only the first few guys behind Porte can still think about competing for the overall win. Their best chance is if Froome has a bad day somewhere—which he does not seem to do much anymore.  Of course with two more weeks of racing, we know anything can happen…

I have to call Team BMC the big losers of the day. Injuries have battered the team, and now their leader, Cadel Evans takes a big loss on the first high mountain stage, and his number two, Van Garderen drops out of GC contention altogether. What’s worse could be that nobody in red and black looked capable of staying with the front group on the climbs. Evans gave a good effort, but does not seem to have the kind of form that netted him a podium spot at the Giro d’Italia in May.

  1. I officially will only refer to T Voekler as Jack in the Box from here on out. I can't thank you enough for that one! Haven't read your preview of this stage yet, but didn't you call it for Quintana in the mountains and to be the dude to watch in the future? Calm cool and collected this guy. And then...Froome. I'm officially worried about my Contador prediction. El pistelero looks beyond spent. I know,I know...it's the tour. Anything. Will. Happen.
    on to stage 9

  2. Quintana is a huge talent. I think I'm picking him for Mont Ventoux.
