TDF Stage 10 Report and Results 2014 Tour De France

Stage 10 Report:

Stage 10 on the map
Monday July 14, 2014
Bastille Day
161.5k from Mulhouse to La Planche Des Belles Filles;
High mountains, mountaintop finish (mtf)

Rain has passed for now, and it is partly clear at the start, temps in the mid 60s. The finish line atop the summit is shrouded in rain and clouds early, but may clear later.

Today is the first real mountaintop finish...and it's Bastille Day. Most of the parcours is up and down; very little flat road. On paper, it is the toughest stage the riders have seen, so far. It should be a good GC battle before the first rest day on Tuesday. Seven categorized climbs are featured on stage 10. Four of them are category-1 climbs, including the summit finish atop the Planche des Belles Filles (5.9k at 8.5%).

The remaining 183 riders leave the start town of Mulhouse. They have 20k of flat roads to start the day, before all the climbing begins.

Shortly after the neutralized opening kms, the attacks begin.
*Ten riders are off the front, and trying to form a viable break. The peloton lets them go.

Stage 10 Profile

The first seven riders clear are Westra (AST), Voeckler (EUR), Moinard (BMC), Irizar (TFR), Visconti (MOV), Gerard (BSE), and Riblon (ALM). A handful of others are chasing them.

[I was surprised to hear that, after a decade in the pro peloton, this is Giovanni Visconti's first Tour De France]

The first chase group is the trio of Peter Sagan (CAN), Jan Barta (TNE), and Joaquim "Purito" Rodriguez (KAT).

The intermediate sprint point will come at about km 40, after the decent of the first climb. Sagan will be hoping to get over the cat-2 climb and grab as many of those intermediate sprint points as possible.

20 kms into the racing, the leaders are getting rained on. The 7 leaders are setting a pace that is too high for the 3 chasers to catch up. Rodriguez, Barta, and Sagan trail the lead group by :52.
The second chase, the lone figure of veteran Jerome Pineau (IAM) is at 3:00, and the peloton is at 4:13 back with about 140k of racing to come.

The climbing specs for the seven categorized climbs of stage 10

Onto the first climb of the day, Col du Firstplan, cat-2, 8.3k long.

*The 1st chasers have caught up to the lead group on the climb, to form a breakaway group of 10.

Sagan is the highest placed rider on GC in the break; he is over 20 minutes back, so no GC threats here.
Purito made clear his intention to pursue the King of the Mountains jersey, and he is delivering on that promise today by making it into the day's break.

The peloton has ridden into the heavy rain now, too.
At the top of the first climb, Voeckler jumps into a sprint...
...Purito is out of the saddle, behind Voeckler, and chasing under torrential rain;

Purito goes into overdrive, and comes around TV just at the line!
They cross just about simultaneously. Rodriguez had more speed coming to the line, but the photo-finish looks like Voeckler just barely beat Purito by a hair.

*km 30.5: 1st KOM; cat-2 [appropriately named] Col du Firstplan (8.3k at 5.4%):
1. Voeckler  2. Rodriguez 3. Sagan  4. Riblon

Sagan is off the front on the descent. He is making a downhill beeline for the INT line.

-125k: The peloton trails Sagan by about 2:30. Several riders lost contact on the first climb, including lanterne rouge Ted King of New Hampshire.

Wet roads again on stage 10 in the mountains
A few riders are trying to bridge the gap to the leaders.

Sagan easily takes top points at the intermediate sprint.
*km39.5: INT:
1. Sagan  2. Westra  3. Riblon  4. Irizar  5. Voeckler  6. Moinard 7. Rodriguez  8. Visconti  9. Gerard  10. Barta  11. Martin  12. Hollenstein  13. Wyss  14. Kwiatkowski  15. Taaramae

Sagan sits up and waits for the chasers to regroup.

The riders are on the 2nd climb of the day, the cat-1 Petit Ballon.
The leaders have a 1:15 advantage over the 5-man chase group, which includes Tony Martin (OPQ--in polka dots); and the peloton trails by 2:03.

The others in the 5-man chase group are Martin's teammate Michal Kwiatkowski (OPQ; looks like he's feeling better today), Reto Hollenstein (IAM), Rein Taaramae (COF), and Marcel Wyss (IAM).

NBCSN report that Team Astana said they plan to take the maillot jaune back today, and are prepared to defend it all the way to Paris.

The lead group is splitting apart on the climb.
*-111k: Rodriguez, Voeckler, Westra, Visconti, and Moinard are the current leaders on the road.
-109k: Riblon rejoins the leaders.

Unfortunate news that Ted King (CAN) has had to abandon the race (sorry Katie!).

Michal Kwiatkowski is close to being the virtual race leader with a 3:30 advantage over the peloton. He looked like he was beginning to falter the last couple days, but he sees an opportunity today. A lot of road remains however...

(-107k): Purito outsprints Voeckler at the summit to take top points on the cat-1 climb.
*km 54.5, 2nd KOM; cat-1 Petit Ballon (9.3k at 8.1%; about an 800m drop, up to 1163m of elevation):
1. Rodriguez  2. Voeckler  3. Moinard  4. Westra  5. Visconti  6. Riblon

-102k: The riders get some brief sunshine for the descent, but the roads are still wet.

The lead group on the road grows with the addition of some of the chasers.
News that Tiago Machado (TNE) has crashed out of the race on the Petit Ballon descent**.
**update ahead...

Tony Martin driving the breakaway group

-97k: Onto the third climb, cat-1 Platzerwassel.

*Alberto Contador has gone down! His kit is torn and dirty. The doctor is attending to the TCS captain's knee, and Contador is gesturing for him to hurry up. His bike frame had been snapped in half. His right knee gets bandaged up, he gets a new left shoe, a new bike, and he's back up and riding. He rounds an uphill bend, testing the knee and the new shoe, and continues ahead.

He has lost a lot of time, maybe as much as five minutes. He has no teammates around. He will have to catch up to them to help him get at least some of that time back. This could be catastrophic for Tinkoff's bid to win the race.

**News that Machado has actually not abandoned. He is up and riding. Chapeau.

Contador has ridden up to 3 teammates, and the chase begins.
This is an intriguing turn of events. It all plays into the hands of Kwiatkowski.

-92k: AC drops back to the medical vehicle for a moment.
His right knee certainly took some damage.
Tosatto drops off, and Contador still has Nico Roche pulling him up the climb, past the rear groups.

-90k: Purito bursts ahead near the summit, and is chased by who else, but Thomas Voeckler. TV can't keep up, though, and he concedes another KOM sprint to the small Spaniard.

*km77: 3rd KOM; cat-1 Col du Platzerwassel (7.1k at 8.4%; 593m drop, up to 1193m elev.):
1. Rodriguez  2. Voeckler  3. Martin  4. Kwiatkowski 5. Visconti 6. Taaramae

-87k: Approaching the feed zone, the lead group (now 11 riders) is being chased separately by Irizar and Sagan;
The peloton trails by 3:58; and Contador is at +7:44.

The leaders are pedaling down the gradually descending back side of the Platzerwassel inside a thick charcoal-grey cloud of ubiquitous moisture.

Kwiatkowski has the great benefit of OPQ teammate Tony Martin to help pull him through the course.

[Bob Rolle makes a comment that I alluded to earlier, when I said that this all plays into Kwiatkowski's hand. And that is: that Astana have a slight predicament in how to proceed here. The unwritten "gentleman's rules" of cycling would have Astana slow the pace to give Contador--a main GC contender--time to catch up, after taking a spill. They would not want to gain an advantage that does not have the air of pure merit about it. Don't kick 'em when they're down, is the idea.

Tony Martin leads teammate Michal Kwiatkowski uphill
But Michal Kwiatkowski is up the road, threatening to ride off with the maillaut jaune. Astana can try to find a balance in keeping up with Kwiatkowski, and waiting for Contador, or they can make a hard choice one way or the other. What do you think they should do? Let's see...

*-78k for the leaders: Contador pulls off.

He leaves Mick Rogers with a message of encouragement and thanks, and dismounts on the right side of the road. The air is grey and dark and full of mist as Bjarne Riis pulls the team car up, and helps el pistolero into the back seat. The soigneurs put his bike on the roof, as Contador holsters his ambitions, and resigns from the 2014 Tour de France.

It is unclear whether AC's frame snapped and caused the crash, or if the crash caused the frame to break. Either way, his ride is over, and the second of the race's general classification favorites has abandoned the race*.
*Contador said he hit something in the road on the fast descent, and it caused his crash.

Contador's departure changes much in the outlook of the race. Right now the Astana team has no more immediate decision to make. They can chase the Kwiatkowski group with full determination. Nibali can also breathe a sigh, knowing that his chances for overall victory have just gone way up. Alejandro Valverde, Richie Porte, Michal Kwiatkowski, and several others can begin to plan for the very real possibility of a podium spot in Paris...or better.

Tony Martin has pulled Michal Kwiatkowski up to the lead group.

-64.4k (40 miles and four more climbs remaining): Kwiatkowski is the virtual race leader now, by about half a minute. 4 climbs remain: a cat-2, a cat-3, and the final two cat-1s.

The [now] 9 leaders are on the 4th KOM: the cat-2 Col d'Oderen (6.7k at 6.1%):
Chase 1 is 2 riders at +2:15;
Chase 2 is Irizar at 3:05;
Chase 3 is the Astana-led GC peloton at 4:37.

Contador tried to continue after the crash
-58k: Rodriguez and Voeckler duke it out again for the points at the top of the Col d'Oderen. At the line Voeckler doesn't bother trying to sprint around Purito. He's learned his lesson by now...

km 103.5; 4th KOM: cat-2 Col d'Oderen (6.7k at 6.1%):
1. Rodriguez  2. Voeckler  3. Martin  4. Kwiatkowski

Purito currently has a 7-point advantage over TV at the top of the KOM jersey competition.

-55k: Lotto is mixed with Astana at the front of the peloton. Adam Hansen is at the helm right now. They summit the 4th climb 4:35 after the lead group.

-40k: Tony Martin has been doing more than the lion's share of the work driving the lead group through the mountains for quite some time now.
The peloton trails them by 3:40 now.

Onto the 5th climb; cat-3 Col des Croix.
The skies are still very cloudy and dark, but no rain is falling right now.

The chase group has picked up the pace. They have taken a minute back in the last 5k.

At the summit, Voeckler defers to Rodriguez again.

*km 125.5; 5th KOM; cat-3 Col des Croix (3.2k at 6.2%);
1. Rodriguez  2. Voeckler

The peloton summit at +2:46.

Martin continues to power down the descent through Servance, dragging the rest along.

-26k: B. Feillu, punctured.
-25k: The leaders have 2:37 on the chasing GC peloton, as they pedal up the 6th--and penultimate--climb of the day. It's a cat-1, just 3.5k long, at a painful 9.5% average, and only goes up to 914m--or 3000 feet--of elevation.

-20.7k: (about 2.5k to the summit) Tony Martin finally pulls off. Kwiatkowski will have to finish it off without any more help. But he got a world of help from Martin. The whole break benefitted from the German's big engine.

20k to go: Riblon is falling back...
The leaders are splintering in the absence of Tony Martin's cadence.
*Kwiatkowski (MK), Rodriguez, and Visconti lead up the last 2kms of the Col des Chevreres. The GC group is said to be about 2:05 back; with several sundry riders in between.

Another race favorite abandons: Contador fractured his right tibia
Talansky has been clinging to the back of the GC group.
Voeckler and Moinard are suffering somewhere in no-man's-land.

The road is up around 20% here. Many are pedaling at a walking pace, or slower.
Visconti loses contact with the other 2 in front.

-19k: J-Rod drops MK:
Kwiatkowski loses contact with Purito's wheel, and...
Joaquim Rodriguez leads alone, inside 1k to the penultimate cat-1 summit.

-18.2k: Visconti finds a second wind near the top of the mountain, and comes around MK (in second place on the road) in search of the summit.

*km143.5: 6th KOM; cat-1 Col des Chevreres (3.5k at 9.5%):
1. Rodriguez  2. Visconti  3. Kwiatkowski  4. Moinard  5. Riblon  6. Voeckler

Nibali and Porte are with their respective teammates at the front of the GC peloton chase, as they cross the summit about 1:35 behind the leader, Purito.

15k to go: Purito leads the race toward the foot of the final test of the day: the cat-1 Planche des Belles Filles. The climb itself is about 6k and averages around 8.5%, but has varying grades throughout. It hits steep spots above 10-12% every km or so, and is a downright nasty 20%+ at the top. Will the leaders have the legs to hold off the GC chase?

Kwiatkowski uses the descent to pass the forward riders and take the lead going on to the foot of the final climb.
Rodriguez is able to catch back onto the young Pole's wheel as they begin to climb...

-7k for the leader.
Visconti chases the 2 leaders at about +:17

Veteran climber Michele Scarponi (AST) misses a turn and goes off the road on the descent.

Astana and Movistar are well represented at the front of the peloton. Most of the GC favorites are there--except Andrew Talansky, who must be feeling the pain from those crashes he took on Friday and Saturday.

*-5.3k: Rodriguez attacks Kwiatkowski. He gets a gap and leads alone again.
After Kwiatkowski, Visconti is still chasing somewhere around +:47.
No one else has survived in between the GC peloton and the leader. The peloton trails now by 1:13.

-4.7k: Daniel Navarro escapes off the front of the GC group. He senses a chance...
-4k: Riblon is back with the GC group now.
-3.5k: Voeckler is back with the yellow jersey group, about 2 minutes behind the GC peloton.

-3.4k The GC group picks up Visconti.

Peraud and Bardet follow Tejay Van Garderen up the final climb

So, First on the road is Purito.
Kwiatkowski is chasing Purito at +:28
The GC group is between :30 and :45 behind Kwiatkowski.
The yellow jersey of Tony Gallopin is about two minutes behind the GC group.

*Just after the 3k to go banner, Nibali's last teammate pulls off, and Nibali launches a big attack.
Valverde and Porte chase...
Pinot and Peraud chase...

*In a flash Nibali flies past Kwiatkowski.
The Shark is now second on the road, with just JRod (Purito) ahead.

The onscreen graphics are not keeping up with the action.
The "distance-to-go" graphic just went up instead of down. But I will go by the distance markers I see on the road...

~ -2.5k: Kwiatkowski is picked up by the GC chasers.

Behind the 6-man GC chase group are Daniel Navarro and John Gadret.
Just behind them is another group containing Van Den Broeck, Rui Costa, Chris Horner, Frank Schleck, and Haimar Zubeldia.

Peraud is turning on the gas at the front of the first 6-man chase group. Porte is on his wheel, and Peraud asks Porte to come up and do some work...
Somewhere behind, Mollema is fading back fast.

About :20 behind Nibali, is a 6-man chase group with Porte, teammates Peraud and Bardet, Van Garderen, Pinot and Valverde. The 6 have just dispatched Kwiatkowski.

MK is further back, now riding with Konig and Nieve.

*JRod is first to ride under the 2k to go banner.
Nibali can see the Spaniard just ahead up the road.
The 6 GC chasers still trail Nibali.

*-1.3k: Nibali catches up to Purito. They ride together for a while...

-1k: Under the red kite, Nibali picks up the pace.
JRod keeps up...for a moment, then Nibali dumps Purito like an old cigar butt.

Pinot attacks the chase group as they now hit 1k to go.
And in front, Nibali throws it all into his stroke, and fires away up to the finish line...

Vincenzo Nibali takes the win on La Planche des Belles Filles!

He'll get the yellow jersey back, just as he and his team promised they would do today. He has also put more time in between himself and all of his rivals.

Nibali blew past Rodriguez in the final kilometer
Pinot's late attack netted him second place, at +:15.
Valverde fills out the podium, finishing third, at :20.
Then comes the Ag2R duo of Peraud and Bardet;
and the American, Van Garderen, is sixth.
Richie Porte is seventh at :25;
...and Konig, Rodriguez, and Nieve fill out the top ten, about half a minute later.

Kwiatkowski was unable to maintain a rhythm on the last climb. He finished 24th, losing more than two minutes.

Peter Sagan again increases his lead in the points jersey competition.

Purito Rodriguez faded in the final kilometer, but the Katusha captain lit up the mountains today, topping five of them in first place. He takes over the KOM jersey. Thomas Voeckler settles into second place in that competition.

Romain Bardet takes the white jersey over from Kwiatkowski, as the new best young rider.

Tony Martin is judged the most combative rider of the day.

The AG2R team jumps from third to first place in the best team competition, on the heels of Peraud's and Bardet's top-5 finishes. [I'm glad I chose to highlight them in my preview yesterday!]

Yellow jersey wearer Tony Gallopin finished 33rd, 4:46 behind Nibali, so he will drop way out of the lead.

New king of the mountains, Joaquim Rodriguez
Porte will rise to second place overall, trailing Nibali by 2:23. So, Nibali has a comfortable lead, and is looking like the strongest man in the race.

Andrew Talansky, suffering the effects of multiple crashes, loses another ten minutes today. The plucky American's high GC hopes are decidedly dashed.

Of course the big loser on the day is Team Tinkoff Saxo, as they lost their team leader, and GC favorite, Alberto Contador to a broken tibia, from a solo crash on a wet descent.

REST DAY TOMORROW!!

A final unrelated note...
This is no forum for political discourse, so I won't comment more than in these two short paragraphs. If you don't want to be bothered with solemn political opinion, and you're just here for cycling discourse (like I hope), then I absolutely understand and fully support you skipping the next two paragraphs. I was very disappointed yesterday to read about the antisemitic violence being encouraged by extremists in France. But I couldn't continue to write about this great sport and this grand race without taking note of the ignorant and misguided xenophobes who populate too much of this world. Throwing rocks and bricks at houses of spiritual worship, during peaceful prayer, and harassing and assaulting innocent, civilian citizens only proves how twisted and barbaric these creatures of hate are.

These are, for the most part, ignorant people who have been mesmerized by fallacious and sinister propaganda, and who have very little understanding of the complex issues they rant about. I only wish they would put as much effort into educating themselves, and endeavoring to find ways of pursuing peaceful and practical ends, rather than so readily identifying with their hatred, fear and anger, and choosing to embrace mad violence and mob mentality. Please people, the world is challenging enough. Why add to the chaotic continuum of negativity and immorality, when you can freely choose to act and live better. And perhaps just as importantly, don't believe everything you hear or read. Seek out multiple credible sources of information, and form your own educated opinions. Thanks for bearing with me.
Enjoy the rest of the race!
