TDF Stage 12 Report and Results 2014 Tour De France

Stage 12 Race Report - as it happened:

Stage 12 on the map
185.5k from Bourg-en-Bresse to Saint-Étienne
Rolling; 4 low-grade climbs on the way. Fast, flat finish.

Weather: Sunny and hot, 89f. Very little wind.

178 riders took the start today.
DNS: Andrew Talansky ; despite yesterday's valiant effort, the American was not able to continue in the race.

A 4-man break leads on the road: Rast (TFR), Clarke (OGE), Vachon (BSE). De La Cruz (TNE).
They build about a six-minute advantage over the first 40k.

Sebastian Langeveld (GRS) connects up with the lead group, and we've got a 5-man breakaway group now. But their lead is coming down...

*km 39.5: INT (Romaneche Thorins):
1. Vachon  2. Rast  3. Clarke  4. De La Cruz  5. Langeveld  6. Kittel  7. Coquard  8. Renshaw  9. Feillu  10. Greipel  11. Sagan  12. Sabatini  13. Viviani  14. Veelers  15. Gene

Stage 12 profile

-130k: The break has a 3:45 advantage over the peloton. It seems early for the peloton to be chasing down the break, but the teams have their strategies. Sprinters' teams who hope to contest the finish will want to keep the break on a reasonably tight leash. Giant Shimano are driving the pace now.

TO CONTINUE, click on "Read more..." in blue, just below these words.

*km58.5:  1st KOM; cat-4 Col de Brouilly:
1. De La Cruz

-125k: The lead is 3:51 now.

-110k: The lead is 4:00.

*km83: 2nd KOM; cat-3 Cote du Saule d'Oingt:
1. De La Cruz  2. Rast

100k to go: The lead is back up to 4:42.
The peloton crosses over the 2nd KOM at +4:55.

*During the TV break, David De La Cruz, the NetApp rider in the breakaway who took the first two KOM points, went down in a crash. He is holding his shoulder and writhing in pain. Looks like a broken collarbone. His front wheel slipped out from under him on a tight bend. It looks in the replays like his front tire may have punctured on the turn. It happened just as his front wheel crossed over a patch in the road surface; one can see a strip about 18 or 20 inches wide that runs straight across the street.  The tarmac color changes on two distinct lines. He landed on his right shoulder and hip. He took out Langeveld when he fell, so now we have three leaders on the road.

Langeveld is chasing at +:40.
I am surprised that the 3 leaders are not waiting for the Dutch National Champion, Langeveld. Four are stronger than three, and Langeveld has a big engine.

The 3 leaders, Rast, Clarke, and Vachon, have increased their lead to over 5 mins.
Langeveld does manage to get back up to the lead group, so they are four again.

-90k: the lead is 4:56.
*De La Cruz has abandoned the race. He is the first NetApp rider to go.

-80k: lead is 3:35.

The riders are on the long, low-gradient rise toward the third KOM of the day.

Europcar has joined Giant Shimano in the front of the peloton. They are eating into the break's lead. Team Astana are in full force just behind them, keeping race leader, Nibali out of trouble.

Scenic stage 12
-61k: The lead is 2:22

During the TV break (it seems to be when a lot of the action happens...) Clarke and Langeveld have ridden away from Vachon and Rast.

*Now 2 leaders on the road: Clarke and Langeveld.

-51k: Vachon back in peloton.
 -50k: Rast chases the 2 leaders at about +:36;
The peloton trails by about 2:14.

*km138: 3rd KOM; cat-3 Col des Brosses (15.3k at 3.3%):
1.Langeveld  2. Clarke

The peloton crosses over the 3rd KOM summit at 2:12 after the leaders.
They pick up Rast. So no one is on the road in between the 2 leaders and the peloton now.

-40k: Langeveld and Clarke lead the peloton by 2:06.

-30k: The riders begin the 4th, and final climb of the day [I had just said to Emily that, if the peloton want to catch the 2 escapees, then they better start bringing that gap down now. It has been holding relatively steady for the last 40kms. Sure enough Europcar were thinking similarly...]
-30k: Europcar send 2 riders off the front of the peloton, and they quickly get a gap.

Gautier and Quemeneur are the two EUR riders trying to bridge the gap to the two leaders, Langeveld and Clarke.

Europcar planned that.
GIA are again leading the peloton chase.

The peloton winding their way toward Saint-Etienne
-28k: Kittel is falling off the back of the peloton, on the 10k climb of the Grammond. Degenkolb seems to be the man that GIA will be riding for today. The low gradient probably isn't badly hurting the already 3-time stage-winner of this year's edition, he is probably just going to ride his own comfortable pace, since the team is riding for Degenkolb today.

The official numbers for the cat-4 Cote de Grammond are: 9.8k at 2.9% [which I think calculates to a 284m drop, from 494m up to 778m.).

-27.7k: About one-third of the way up the climb, a crash disrupts the peloton. Down are Busche (TFR) and Oliveira (LAM).  They seem to be ok.

Renshaw is also losing contact with the field.

*-25.7k: About 4k to the summit, Clarke suddenly attacks Langeveld. He is out of the saddle and riding away, quickly up the hill.

Langeveld does not chase. He takes a drink of water, and lets Clarke go.

*Status on the road update:
*-25k: Clarke leads alone, on the final climb.
Langeveld is behind him by a few hundred meters.
Gautier and Quemeneur are chasing at +34;
The peloton is at 1:22.

The peloton is still led by Giant Shimano, then Europcar, Astana, SKY and Astana.

Europcar attackers Gautier and Quemeneur

-24k:  The chasing EUR duo passes Langeveld.
Clarke is seen taking a pull from the stickiest bottle I've seen in a long time.
-22.5k: Langeveld slides back through the peloton.

Clarke keeps a high pace up the climb, and summits first.
Gautier and Quemeneur cross over just :08 behind him.
The peloton cross over at +:56.

*km164; 4th KOM; cat-4 Cote de Grammond (9.8k at 2.9%):
1. Clarke

Shortly after the summit, they begin the descent toward the finish. The EUR boys catch Clarke in the front of the race.

*The 3-man lead group is Quemeneur, Gautier (EUR), and Clarke (OGE).
-17.5k: The peloton chases the 3 leaders at +:37.
About 10 riders are off the back.

Just under 15k to go: Gautier accelerates on the descent. Clarke reels him in...and Quemeneur jumps ahead...

-12.2k: Izagirre (MOV) punctures.

-10k: The 3 leaders are together, nearing the bottom of the descent.
The peloton is at +:20.

The road levels out for the final 9k.
A Lotto Belisol rider comes to the front of the peloton. Greipel is one of many sprinters who have made it through the hills to contest the bunch sprint.

-8.7k:
Quemeneur is caught by the pel.

Clarke and Gautier are holding on to a :15 lead with five miles to go.

The peloton is stringing out under the high pace now being set by GIA again...
-7k: Gautier, in front, asks Clarke to come up and take over. Clarke shakes him off.
Gautier attacks to see if Clarke is really on empty, and Clarke chases right onto his wheel. He's just playing a tactical game. Clarke also probably suspects that their doomed anyway. The peloton is barreling down on them...

*-5.2k: The peloton sweeps up the 2 leaders. gruppo compatto.

Gallopin and Purito are 2 in the small group of riders who are behind the peloton.

-3.7k: Sagan's Cannondale team set up at the front of the field.
-3.5k: crash in the peloton.  A few riders have gone into the ditch on the right side of the narrow road. Greipel (LTB) is one of them. Also one rider from each of these teams: Belkin, BMC, TNE, IAM, and maybe one more.
The IAM rider down is Chavanel.

Simon Clarke on the move
They are just outside of 3k to go, so they will not be given the same finishing time as the peloton. And Greipel will not be able to contest the sprint again.
Greipel and Chavanel are up, riding slowly, and having a loud conversation, that is definitely not about the wonderful weather.
Greipel was audible on TV, saying, firmly "...you [inaudible] the handlebars and...That's why you crashed. Your crash. Your mistake."
...And Chavanel is simply agreeing with him.

-2k: The peloton is picking up velocity. They rip through town, with Cannondale and Giant sharing time up front...
Katusha make their presence known as well.

Inside the final kilometer:
A CAN leadout man drifts back from the front.
3 OPQ riders take over: Tony Martin in front, Kwiatkowski, and then Trentin. Could they set their French teammate up for another win?

Kristoff (KAT) is getting into position...
Martin pulls off...
Kristoff moves up on the right...
Degenkolb, Albasini and Demare are there...

In the last 150 meters or so, Trentin swerves a little left, and momentarily blocks Degenkolb against the left barriers. That slowed Degenkolb, and took him out of contention.

The sprint for the line:
Kristoff is in front...
Sagan and Demare are the closest...
Sagan is catching up to Kristoff's wheel, as they hit top speed...

...and at the line, it's Kristoff by half a bike length!

He held off Peter Sagan and Arnaud Demare.
That's the order of the top 3 finishers.
Then came Albasini and Navardauskas in 4th and 5th.

Tough break for Gautier and Clarke.  Clarke was out in the break for something like 170 kms on a hot day today. He'll probably get most combative.

Great win for Kristoff, on a hard-fought stage. He's a great sprinter and deserves the recognition. He jumps Kittel to take third place overall in the points competition

Sagan cannot seem to finish. He and his team have done some tremendous work to be there for the finales...and then he can't finish it off. He was second yet again. Second place on a TDF stage is very impressive, but Sagan I think, is one of the many who might consider 2nd to be "first loser". Perhaps more importantly to him, he's still got a stranglehold on the green jersey.

Sagan has finished second in this Tour to Kittel twice (stages 1 and 3), Trentin (stage 7), and today to Kristoff. He also has two 4th place and one 5th place finish.

None of the jerseys changed hands today.

Simon Clarke is voted the most combative rider.

STAGE 13 PREVIEW COMING RIGHT UP...

Alexander Kristoff (Katusha) takes his first TDF win
