TDF STAGE 11 REPORT and RESULTS 2014 Tour De France

Stage 11 Report:

Stage 11 on the map

1100 miles and the first rest day behind the riders, the race is about half over (in distance)

187.5k from Besancon to Oyonnax (still in the Jura); rolling.
Weather: mostly clear and sunny; significantly warmer, 80 f.

DNS: Fabian Cancellara (said he wants to rest before training for the Worlds in Spain, which are in about nine and a half weeks).

If you are like me then you spent a significant amount of time last night reading all the news and tweets about Contador's broken bike. So, I won't beleaguer the point. Just to say, a not-so-simple chain of events took place wherein Berto crashed, and one of his bikes got smashed. The frame was broken on the top tube and on the down tube, with very little other damage or other marks. Team Tinkoff's final word is that Alberto was not riding the bike that broke. They say the broken bike was caused when the Tinkoff-Saxo car brushed past the Belkin Team car, and the bikes on the roof racks got tangled and snapped Alberto's spare bike frame. It was like "Bike-gate" on the social media sites, but I am perfectly content to believe the publicized story, and get on with the race. Bicycles certainly do overlap the top edges of the vehicles, so it is entirely plausible that bicycles on top of two parallel cars could get tangled up. My question is: Why haven't we seen more of that?

Unfortunately the race will go on without the explosive attacking of the Spanish 5-time grand tour champion, Alberto Contador. 179 riders took the start today for stage 11.

Here is a list, by stage, of all the riders who have abandoned the race so far:

Stage 2: Mark Cavendish (DNS), Sacha Modolo
Stage 4: Andy Schleck (DNS), Greg Henderson
Stage 5: Chris Froome,
Stage 6: Maximiliano Richeze (DNS), Jesus Hernandez, Egor Silin, Xabier Zandio
Stage 7: Danny Van Poppel, Darwin Atapuma, Stef Clement
Stage 8: Mathias Frank (DNS), Bart De Clercq
Stage 9: Egoitz Garcia
Stage 10: Alberto Contador, Ted King, Matt Hayman
Stage 11: Cancellara (DNS)...

Based on reports from folks who rode the course this morning, the finish seems to be more technical than the profile might suggest. Narrow twisting roads that continually undulate over the last 45k, will make for some serious fractured racing at the end. Seems more suited to the Jan Bakelants, Gio Visconti, Rui Costa, Nico Roche, Michael Kwiatkowski, and Michael Albasini-types rather than the Sep Vanmarcke, Romain Feillu, Maxim Iglinskiy, Arnaud Demare types (I could see Tony Martin again try to set up Kwiatkowski for a win; even Tony Gallopin might find the legs again to tackle this course: he wore the yellow jersey on Bastille Day, but he hasn't gotten to win a stage yet).

Some fast finishers who could still be there at the end could be the likes of JJ Rojas, Greg Van Avermaet, Sam Dumoulin, or maybe Sylvain Chavanel or John Degenkolb. But do not expect Greipel, Cocquard, Kristoff, or Renshaw to be up there.

Stage 11 Profile

To the road:

*3-man break got away: Anthony Delaplace (BSE), Cyril Lemoine (COF), Martin Elmiger (IAM).

They built a lead of close to six minutes. The peloton picked up the pace, and started eating into the lead.

km 67.5: With 120k left to ride, the three leaders have a gap of 4:43 to the peloton.

*km89: INT (Charcier):
1. Lemoine  2. Elmiger  3. Delaplace  4. Greipel  5. Kittel  6. Kristoff  7. Renshaw  8. Coquard  9. Curvers  10. Gene  11. Sagan  12. Meier  13. Marino  14. Viviani  15. Vanotti

The peloton crossed the intermediate sprint line at 3:50 after the 3 leaders. Andre Greipel dominated the sprint to the line. Sagan casually cruised by in 11th. I suspect he is saving every ounce of energy today for the fast, technical finish.

The leaders soon build their lead back up to about 4:30.

*-52k: Talansky has drifted back to the rear. He is riding slowly, maybe waiting for the Garmin team car to get up to him for some assistance.
The team car gets up to him, but the cameras did not catch if they exchanged any words or items. They are following Talansky as he drafts behind the Katusha team car for a while. It looks like he just gestured to his tailbone. I think the American is suffering lingering pain from his earlier crashes. The whole caravan is passing by him.

Christian Vande Velde reminds the US TV viewers that Talansky landed on his rear in the last fall he took. He is said to have been complaining this morning about back pain. This could be the end of his tour. He's about a minute behind the peloton right now, and pedaling gingerly.

-75k: Talansky has been passed by almost the entire caravan. He is fighting on, with the second team car staying with him to gauge his progress.

-66k: Jens Voigt gets a wheel change.
-65k: The leaders have a 2:51 gap over the peloton now; and Talansky is at +6:01 (more than three minutes behind the peloton). But the American is soldiering on, hoping at least to finish the stage in time, and see how feels later.

-55k: The Garmin team have taken to the front of the peloton for the first categorized climb of the day: the cat-3 Cote de Rogna (7.6k at 4.9%), and are increasing the pace, to chase down the break and set up one of their guys for the stage win--probably Tom Slagter. So, Talansky is being further distanced as a result of his own team's acceleration. He trails the peloton by over 8 minutes now.

Talansky's GC hopes are gone, so the team has to explore other options. There's no use sending guys back to help him, because he just doesn't have that power in him to chase now, and Garmin has an opportunity to go for a stage win with another rider.

*-51.1k: Andrew Talansky pulls off to the side of the road, and parks his all-black Cervelo R5 against the guardrail. Robbie Hunter comes out of the team car and sits Talansky down on the guardrail and begins a long conversation with his team leader, who is shedding tears throughout the talk. After a few minutes, The pit bull actually gets back on the bike, and starts riding again! That must have been some pep talk.

*-50k: Delaplace has been gapped by the other 2 leaders, Lemoine and Elmiger. the Bretagne Seche rider now trails them by :25;
The peloton is about 1:20 behind the 2 leaders, and closing in;
Talansky is trying to get into a rhythm, at +13:30.

Phil Liggett reminds us that the race judges allowed Tiago Machado to continue racing, despite finishing outside the time limit on stage 10. He had come in more than 43 minutes after the winner, but the referees decided that, due to his fighting spirit, they would allow the Portuguese NetApp-Endura rider to continue in the race.

[This is a completely arbitrary and subjective bending of the rules. The commissairs were not so generous last year, when poor Ted King was coldly eliminated by strict adherence to the rules after finishing a stage just 7 seconds late (I think it was 7--anyway, just a few seconds). That is awful officiating, in my opinion. Consistency should be foremost in any officiating.

They must decide to either follow the rules strictly, or to be lenient and sentimental and consider the rules as mere guidelines. Continually changing the approach only serves to foment resentment among the teams and riders--and fans--and in demonstrating their namby-pamby wishy-washiness, they add more chaos to an event that needs order--and relies heavily upon the referees for that order.]

The riders enjoyed a sunny day, after a very rainy week
Astana lead the peloton chase now.
-49k: Delaplace has been picked up buy the peloton.
*km 139 (30 miles to go): Elmiger has just distanced Lemoine.

At some point, a few riders broke off the front of the peloton, and are chasing in between the pel and the leader.

-48k: Nico Roche is out in front of the peloton;
Gautier, too. And Bakelants...

*km141 (-46.5k); 1st KOM; cat-3 Cote de Rogna (7.6k at 4.9%):
1. Elmiger 2. Bakelants

The peloton, led by Bakelants, top the first cat-3 climb about 1:10 behind the lone leader, Elmiger.

A 4-man chase group formed behind Elmiger, with Roche, Bakelants, Lemoine and Slagter. Soon they began to splinter.

-45k: 2 Movistar riders accelerate off the front of the peloton.

-42k: The peloton trails by 1:03; Talansky is at 15:42.
Just inside 40k to go: Slagter is absorbed into the peloton, and then Gautier.

Roche is still riding in the gap, with Bakelants, trailing Elmiger by about :20; the peloton is also about :20 behind them.

No word on what happened to the 2 Movistar riders. The TV announcers didn't acknowledge the move.

2 other chasers may still be in between Roche/Bakelants and the peloton as they climb the second cat-3 KOM, the short Cote de Choux (1.7k at 6.5%).

-39k: Meanwhile, Elmiger still leads the race on the road...for now. His lead is dwindling--except over Talansky, who is now almost 18 minutes back.
Paul calculated 33-35 minutes should be the approximate cut-off time today, so Talansky needs to really move on the descents ahead. Riding solo should make navigating the narrow, twisting hills a little calmer.

*km148.5: 2nd KOM; cat-3 Cote de Choux (1.7k at 6.5%):
1. Elmiger  2. Roche

The 1st chase group of Roche and Bakelants summits the 2nd KOM just :10 behind Elmiger;
Peter Stetina, who had been on the move (off camera), crosses over at +:33;
The peloton is just 2 or 3 seconds behind Stetina, at +:35.

*-37k: Roche and Bakelants pick up Elmiger to form a 3-man lead group.

Gautier and Herrada are out in front of the pel (they may be the duo that I thought were both Movistar riders earlier. Europcar's dark green might have looked like Movistar's dark blue from the aerial shot that captured the earlier breakaway that I mentioned (at -45k). Anyway, they trail the 3 leaders by just :10.

With the peloton just about :20 behind Gautier and Herrada, it might be wise for the 3 leaders to let the 2 chasers get on terms with them, to form a more powerful 5-man break. And...that is exactly what they do on this third climb.

-36k: As the 5 leaders approach the third summit, Talansky is crossing over the first one, over 11kms, and almost 19:00 back.

Sylvain Chavanel drops back to his IAM team car for some water.

*km152.5 (-35k); 3rd KOM; cat-4 (3.1k at 5.2%)
1. Elmiger

The peloton crosses over at +:34 to the break. Cannondale and SKY are up front as they begin the descent.
Orica takes over before the next climb.

The scenic finish town of Oyonnax

*-21.75k: Roche accelerates out of the saddle early on the 4th climb. Gautier and friends chase, but Elmiger is dispatched by the move. His work is done.

-21k: Roche keeps powering uphill and pulls away from the others as he nears the top of the final categorized climb of the day.

-20k: crash in the back of the peloton: Scarponi (AST) and Serpa (LAM) go down next to each other. They don't look hurt, but I think Scarponi just shot a reproachful look at Serpa.

*The peloton scoops up the 4 break riders who just got dropped by Roche.
So, Roche leads alone. The peloton chases him at +:15, as he summits the final cat-3 climb.

*km168; 4th KOM; cat-3 Cote d'Echallon (3k at 6.6%; summit: 969m):
1. Roche  2. De Marchi

There is one more small, uncategorized hill to get over, and then comes the 10k descent to the finish town, followed by a flattish (slightly descending grade) run-in to the finish at Oyonnax. We should start to see a flurry of moves now I think.
Talansky is about 22:00 back now.

Sure enough, just as I said, several riders attacked out of the peloton while NBCSN went to break. They don't seem to think at all about when they cut away from the action. It is sort of frustrating...
...That's why I like to have an online stream of the race coming in at the same time. Only, today my internet is very slow, so I decided to forego the streaming race. Anyway, most of them cut to break also, but you can usually find one still in program while another is in a break... (That was my break. Now back to the action...)

*-15k: road leader Nicolas Roche has been caught by a chasing group of about 8 riders. They include Tony Martin and a yet unidentified teammate. [could it be Kwiatkowski, as I suggested earlier, in a repeat of the pair's stage 8 attempt?]

Nibali and Sagan are in the first chasing group, behind them...

-14k: As Martin flies down the winding wooded road, the chase group catches onto their rear. Rui Costa and Romain Bardet are among those being gapped due to Martin's pace.
I really thought Rui Costa would try something today, but he may not have the legs for it.

*-13.4k: Gallopin attacks off the front. This is a good finish for his skills. He grabs a 3 or 4-second lead...
Martin's work is done, and he sits up. Others take up the pace-making.

10k to go: Gallopin leads by about :10 or :15.
The chase group behind him contains most of the GC favorites. There had been a gap in the peloton--in fact, it got quite fractured--over the last few kms, but it looks like they are pulling it back together.

Peter Sagan, Vincenzo Nibali, and Alejandro Valverde are driving in the front of the group.

*-10k: Sagan attacks out of the peloton as they go under the 10k to go banner. He has a Movistar rider on his wheel--I don't think it's Valverde; maybe Izagirre or Visconti?

-9.6k: Sagan gestures with his elbow, for the Movistar rider to come up and work, but he's not going to find much help at this point.

The moto in front of Sagan (2nd on the road) shows the man in green flying down this hill, hugging the corners, using every inch of the road. I can't see Gallopin holding off this chase. Sagan and his shadow even start to gap the others...

-9k: An OPQ rider and a Saxo rider--it's Mick Rogers--are leading the chase behind Sagan. Rogers has several riders trying to stay on his wheel...

We haven't seen Gallopin in a few minutes. There must be a motorbike up there with him, but it could be that the road is too hairy for the cameraman to get a good image right now. The gap is :10, they say.

-8.7k: Rogers and the Omega rider use a sharp bend to zoom up to Sagan.

-8.5k: Finally we see Gallopin. He is still racing downhill in front, trying to hold--or preferably, extend--his lead...
Sagan chases Gallopin...

8k (or, 5 miles) to go.

-7.6k: Rogers takes over the chase of Gallopin. Sagan settles in behind him and the OPQ rider.

-7.2k: Rogers, Sagan and the OPQ rider are pulling away from the rest, as they all fly down this winding hill.

-6.4k:
Michal Kwiatkowski is the OPQ rider with Sagan and Rogers. It's natural that he would try to pull back some time on this stage, with his time-trial and cyclocross skills.

So, about :10 behind the leader Gallopin, is the 3-man chase group of Sagan, Rogers, and Kwiatkowski.
More are chasing not far behind.

Gallopin has to quickly pull his leg in as he cruises around an inside bend that has rocks protruding out.

-5k: The roads flatten out a bit. Gallopin's lead is said to be about 5 or 6 seconds.

Talansky is at +25:00, so he's theoretically got about 8 to 10 minutes to play with. He won't match the speed of the front racers now, when he gets to where they are, but he can certainly make it home. The question will remain (not for very long) as to whether the American will be able to continue riding in the second, tougher half of the 2014 Tour de France. Four big mountaintop finishes and a long ITT await...

*-4.3k: The leader, Gallopin is caught by the 3-man chase group of Sagan, Rogers, and Kwiatkowski. The GC favorites are not far behind them, riding hard.

*The 4-man lead group is now: Gallopin, Sagan, Rogers, and Kwiatkowski.

-3k: Kwiatkowski leads the front quartet as they round a bend with 3k to go.
*-2.8k: Gallopin attacks the leaders. Within 300 meters he gets a nice gap. The gap grows quickly...

2k to go: Gallopin is pulling away from everyone. He's going for the win...
The other 3 erstwhile leaders are just barely holding off the charging peloton.

1k to go: Gallopin keeps the pedals cranking, as the 3 chasers start to look at each other. They could lose their chance to race for 2nd at least.

-600 meters: The peloton absorbs Kwiatkowski and Rogers; but Sagan is trying to hang on...

-300m: Gallopin holds his lead and keeps going for the line...

-100m: Tony Gallopin looks around, and realizes he has time to celebrate. He throws his hands in the air and relishes the moment, as he cruises over the line first.

A feverish sprint heats up behind him...
John Degenkolb takes second, ahead of Matteo Trentin.

Some ill-bred moron waved one of those giant green paper souvenir hands right out in front of Gallopin's face in the final 200 meters to the line, so that he had to ride through it. That is dangerous, stupid, and totally incomprehensible to me. We have seen injuries result from idiotic moves like that (remember Thor Hushovd's arm getting sliced open on the stage-1 finish sprint at the 2006 Tour?). A cyclist barreling down on you at 60 kph is not a toy. This is their livelihood, and their very lives that are being risked and minimized by such idiotic behavior.  (Didn't we cover this already in the first week of this Tour, when all the giddy Brits were taking selfies in the middle of the road?)

37:12 is the time that Talansky has to finish the stage. He should have plenty of time to get there--though, fortunately I can't feel his pain.

This result for Gallopin should make his family proud, and quiet any more critics remaining out there, some of whom shouted "nepotism!" once. Like his father Joel, and uncle Alain, Tony Gallopin is writing his own story into the history of professional cycling. A stage win and a day in yellow in the Tour De France is pretty good stuff.

No big surprises in the top 35 finishers, who all finished with the same time. I did not expect to see Trentin finish so well today, I guess.
A little disappointed in some of my picks, but this is one of those stages that was wide open. I'll single out Rui Costa as particularly disappointing. He should have excelled in that finish, but he ended up losing almost a minute and a half instead. He dropped out of the top 10, from 9th to 14th overall.

Thankfully Talansky is finally on the final descent. All the climbing is behind him now. He should definitely make it well inside the time cut. Everyone applauds the effort. In my opinion, today he proved he belongs in this race, and in these ranks, more than ever.

American Andrew Talansky, another top contender is hobbled

Sagan was denied again today. He seemed to be poised to grab the win, and then he started playing games with his chase group. He may have just not had the legs to follow when Gallopin attacked, but it seemed to me like he was hoping to get the other guys to help chase, when it was he himself who should have chased Gallopin down (because he was technically the fastest finisher there). The opportunities are getting fewer for Sagan to take a stage win. Tomorrow's stage 12 will be another opportunity, before the peloton hits the Alps on Friday.

Stage 12 Preview:

Tomorrow is a little similar, in that it's a low, rolling stage, but I expect to see the sprinters have a much better shot at controlling the race. Those two categorized climbs on the back end shouldn't be much of a problem for the sprinter's teams. They are long, but the gradients are low.

I'm going to pick Marcel Kittel for stage 12.
Longshot: Davide Cimolai

Enjoy!
And if you actually read this, then THANKS!
