STAGE 20 Race Report and Results 2013 Giro d'Italia Tre Cime di Lavaredo

210 kilometers  from Silandro to Tre Cime di Lavaredo (cima coppi)
weather: 7 c (45 f) at the start, 0 c (32 f) at the finish; Rain is forecast for much of the route; snow for the finish;

Danilo Di Luca is being lambasted in the press for returning a positive sample in an out-of-competition drug test. His team, Vini Fantini-Selle Italia, duly fired him when the news broke yesterday. Even Lance Armstrong weighed in:
"Knowing I have 0 cred on the doping issue - I still can't help but think, really Di Luca? Are you that f--ing stupid?"

Also not taking the start today is Team Blanco’s leader, Robert Gesink. The Dutchman apparently took ill and pulled out of the race yesterday. He had been riding in 12th place.

Stage 19 was canceled and stage 20 cut to shreds because of snow
Stage 20 is not the queen stage we all looked forward to, but the RCS cannot control the weather, and the riders’ (as well as the caravan’s and the fans’) safety absolutely must come first.  Still, it is a mountaintop finish, and the Tre Cime will now be the Cima Coppi of the race (the highest peak). The finish line sits at an altitude of just over 2300 meters (7559 feet).

22 k before the finish, the riders will tackle the category-2 Tre Croci climb. It averages around 7% over eight kilometers. They will have a few kilometers to recover for the final ascent.

The final climb to the finish is a steep...

 ...category one, about 7.5 kilometers in length, and has an average gradient around 8.6%. The first km is over 10%, the final 4k average a more painful 12%, and it has merciless sections that come close to 20%. The final kilometer also boasts a couple of sharp turns that the riders will have to negotiate before the finish line.

This is the final mountain stage, and the last chance for GC hopefuls to try and gain some time on their rivals. Nibali comes in with a lead of 4:02 to second place Cadel Evans. Rigoberto Uran trails Evans by only ten seconds. Michele Scarponi is fourth, a full 1:02 behind Uran. He will want to do something about that gap somehow, since he is one place shy of a podium spot (which, as far as GC contenders go, is First Loser).

The two men vying for the Young Rider’s Jersey, Saxo’s Rafal Majka and Ag2R’s Carlos Betancur, are separated by just two seconds, so they will fight it out all the way to the line. Behind them, in third place, Blanco’s Wilco Kelderman trails them both by over ten minutes.

There is also the matter of an elusive stage win for any of the teams who are still looking to walk away from the race with some successful results. Here is the stage-win count for the teams:

Movistar (4), Omega Pharma (4), Sky (2), Katusha (2), Argos Shimano (1), Bardiani (1), Lotto (1), Garmin (1), Vini Fantini (1), Cannondale (1)

Thirteen teams have not won a stage yet.

The riders have rolled out of the start, and after 10 kms are still all together.
 -185 k: after 25 kms it’s still gruppo compatto
A few minutes later, a small group of four riders have broken clear. They are: Yaroslav Popovych (Radioshack), Pavel Brutt (Katusha), Adam Hansen (Lotto Belisol), and Giairo Ermetti (Androni Giocattoli).

-175k: The four-man break has a 1:10 lead. It looks like this will be the break of the day. Interesting that no other riders sought to get in that break. There are several riders who would have very good reasons to get into the break, as some of the minor competitions are still close. There may not be much glory in the Premio della Fuga or Intermediate Sprint or Most Combative Rider competitions, but they do come with cash prizes and can help defend a wildcard team’s invitation. They will have the opportunity to contest some of those competitions again tomorrow.

15 minutes later the breakaway group has a six-minute lead.

The wildcard teams need to show that they were worthy of the highly coveted Grand Tour invitation. Bardiani Valvole and Vini Fantini scored stage wins and have both put riders in several escape groups. Bardiani also have Pirazzi, who is going to walk off with the Mountains Jersey. Androni Giocattoli have not won a stage but they have been very active in the breaks and have certainly helped animate the race. Fabio Duarte has been impressive on the climbs, but his Team Colombia could really benefit from a stage win today.

It is snowing at the finish line. Sleet is also falling on the Tre Cime climb.

-77 k: The gap is now 7:00;
-71 k: rain starts to fall on the escape group.
Euskatel is driving the front of the peloton. Their leader, Sammy Sanchez is still looking for a stage win. He was holding the lead in the stage 18 climbing time trial until the last rider, race leader Nibali, came home and smashed the Spaniard’s time by about a minute.

Sanchez will have his pedals full today staving off Domenico Pozzovivo, who is coveting a top-ten placing. The Ag2R climber excels on steep climbs like today’s finish, and he trails Sanchez by just eleven seconds for the 10th spot overall.

-60k: the gap is 6:01;

*km 155, Dobbiaco: 1st INT Sprint:
The leaders do not sprint for the line. They just roll through:

Omega’s Matteo Trentin ushers his teammate Mark Cavendish to the sprint line for the final available point, after the break group grabbed the first four spots. Rafael Andriato of Vini Fantini sprints for it, too, much to Cavendish’s ire. Cav pips him at the line and then expresses his anger to Andriato for his audacity. The two exchange some heated words. Andriato is leading the Intermediate Sprint Competition, and technically has every right to pad his lead, whereas Cav is in a tight race for the more valuable Points Jersey.

1st INT Sprint: 1. Brutt 2. Hansen 3. Popovych 4. Ermetti 5. Cavendish

A tacit understanding exists in the upper echelons of pro cycling, wherein the top contenders are treated with a certain degree of deference. But all things being equal, every rider ought to have an equal opportunity to compete. Cavendish would have a viable argument if he was taken on by a random rider who really has nothing to gain by swiping that point, but considering his position in the INT competition (he was leading Cameron Wurf by two points), Andriato absolutely had every right to race his own race. I think that’s what Andriato tried to convey to Cav in their short “discussion”.

-50k: the lead is down to just over five minutes;
-40k: 4:10 gap;
The Tre Cime peaks are one of the most beautiful and majestic sights in the Alps. The Dolomites are absolutely spectacular. Maybe we will get a proper helping of them next year.

-30.7 Ermeti gets a gap on the other 3 leaders;
-30k: the gap is 2:57;
The riders drop down out of the rain and onto dry roads, temporarily;
Popo, Brutt, and Hansen pull back Ermetti;

-24k: It’s raining again as Popo attacks and leaves the other three behind;
They go through Cortina D’Ampezzo on wet cobbles;
Cannondale have taken the wheel, driving the peloton chase through the valley, trailing the leaders by 2:24;
They are about to start the penultimate climb, the cat. 2 Tre Croci.

Further back 2 Ag2R riders are helping get their leader Carlos Betancur, back up to the peloton. He punctured a tire on the descent.

The break group are splitting apart on the early part of the climb.
The leaders have grabbed the first four places at the second intermediate sprint point.
No one challenges Cavendish this time for the single point for fifth place when the peloton roll through 2:24 later.

2nd INT: 1. Popovych 2. Brutt 3. Hansen 4. Ermetti 5. Cavendish

Carlos Betancur comes through a solid minute behind the peloton. He’s on a new bike but I don’t imagine he would have been planning a bike change here, at this pace. I’ll go with the puncture report.

-20k: Brutt and then Hansen are leading now; the peloton trails by 2:53;
Betancur is not going to have an easy time catching up on these slopes, but I wouldn’t rule him out the way he has been climbing.
The precipitation is pelting the riders now. Looks like snow mixed with sleet.

I think Brutt has dropped Hansen, but we’re not getting pictures from the front right now.

-19.7k: Weening (OGE) accelerates off the front of the pack; he is followed by Wilco Kelderman (BLA) and Damiano Caruso (CAN);

Weening attacks aggressively and gets a nice gap on the others;
He looks to be about 750 meters behind the leader;
At 18.3 k to go, Weening trails Brutt and Hansen by 2:05; he’s got :20 on the pink jersey chase group, who have picked up Kelderman and Caruso;

In the back, Betancur gets a helpful slingshot from his countryman—but not teammate—Team Colombia rider, Wilson Torres. [Fabio Parra is somewhere smiling.]

Inside 18k to go Weening is gaining time on the leaders, he’s looking very strong right now;
Betancur is on his own, still trying to catch the Pink Jersey group, who have dwindled to about 20 riders. Betancur is working at a very fast clip;
-17.7k for the leader on the road, Pavel Brutt. He is indeed out front alone.

Pirazzi has launched himself out of the bunch, he is followed by a Colombia rider—it’s Atapuma (I’m pretty sure he was my dark-horse pick today);
Betancur gets on with the chasers now.

-16.5k: Peter Weening trails the Russian from Katusha, Pavel Brutt by 1:12;
-16k: Weening picks up a fading Adam Hansen;
Popo and Ermetti are pedaling backwards now.

-15.6k: The Nibali peloton is 37 riders strong. They trail Brutt by 1:48; Atapuma is 18 seconds ahead of the Nibali group; Weening is 24 seconds ahead of Atapuma, trailing Brutt by 1:06;
Some snow lines the forested sides of the roads here;

 -15k the peloton catch Atapuma;
Pirazzi attacks them again. He doesn’t need any more mountain points, but this a respectable effort. The race organizers basically gave Pirazzi the Mountains Jersey when they cut all of stage 19 and most of stage 20’s climbs, so it’s good to see him still attacking despite having the competition locked up--just to show that he is a legitimate and proud jersey winner, I imagine. He has attacked on so many stages that he has barely been challenged. Some wonder where he got the strength.

-14k: The snow is deeper now on the sides of the road.
Nibali’s Astana crew lead the charge now for the bunch, who are now passing under the 15k to go banner. Luca Brambilla attacks the bunch, he’s followed by a Movistar rider—maybe Intxausti? No, it’s Capecchi. I think Intxausti is in there though

1st KOM: 1. Brutt 2. Weening 3. Pirazzi 4. Brambilla 5. Capecchi

Betancur cruises up alongside Majka in the pink jersey group. He’s baaaack. (sorry).
Brambilla (OPQ) and Capecchi (MOV) pick up Weening and are just about to pick up Brutt in front.
Brutt is dropped.

-8.6k: Nibali has three teammates with him, including Kangert; Evans is up there, Duarte next to him;
*-8.4k: It is snowing hard on the three leaders, Capecchi, Weening and Brambilla. Capecchi is riding hard in front;
Behind, Atapuma attacks the bunch again, he gets on with Pirazzi who was a few seconds ahead;

-6k: Kiserlovski Attacks the bunch;
*In the front, Capecchi drops his two partners and continues on alone;
Robert Kiserlovski now gets on with Pirazzi and Atapuma; they drop Pirazzi and he’s scooped up by the Nibali group;
A helicopter hurls a swirl of snow from a group of trees and it blows all over the road just behind the Nibali group.

*-5k: The situation on the road:
Eros Capecchi (MOV) leads and is coming to the lower part of the steep finale.
Behind him Weening and Brambilla (G2) are chasing, somewhere in front of Kiserlovski and Atapuma (G3); the Nibali group is chasing not far behind them.

The Vincenzo Nibali group contains most of the GC contenders, and includes: Tanel Kangert, Fabio Aru and, is that Valerio Agnoli? (AST), Cadel Evans (BMC), Fabio Duarte (COL), Michele Scarponi and Przemyslaw Niemiec (LAM), Domenico Pozzovivo and Carlos Betancur (Ag2R), Rafal Majka (TST), Damiano Caruso (CAN), Franco Pellizotti and.. I think that’s Diego Rosa  (AND), Jose Herrada (MOV), Rigoberto Uran (SKY), etc.
Inside -3.5k: The Nibali group is down to about 25 riders.

-3.2k: Brambilla has dropped Weening;
An Astana rider drops off the front of the GC chase group; Nibali still has 2 teammates.

*The leaders are at -3.1k when Nibali attacks the other favorites!
He accelerated on one of the very steep sharp hairpins. Kangert comes up and gets in front to help his team leader. They are not allowed much of a leash.

Behind them Uran moves up through the pack from way back and is soon near the front.

We are on the serious steeps now.
*Capecchi still leads. Somewhere behind him are Kiserlovski, Brambilla, and Atapuma.
Weening crawls to the -3k banner :15 ahead of the Nibali/GC group. (Nibali has maybe a second or two gap to the others).

The mostly Italian crowd on the sides of the road are stoked to see their man Nibali pushing to a race win;
There’s a pillar of smoke behind Capecchi—a burned out motorbike or a tifosi barbecue?

-2.9k: Kiserlovski gets scooped up by the Nibali group;
Not sure where Brambilla, and Atapuma are. The peloton may have grabbed them all, which would make Nibali second on the road.

Visibility is difficult on the final climb
Nibali is setting a hard tempo; the group is stringing out behind. Evans is suffering. Scarponi is fading.
*-2.7k: Nibali gets a gap and Betanucr answers first, Uran is with him—but not Majka!
Betancur is going after that white jersey win.

-2.6 k Nibali passes Weening… then at -2.4k he passes Capecchi.
Nibali is riding away, possibly to a stage win to top off his race.
Behind him are Uran, Betancur and Duarte.

The trio of Colombians is chasing Nibali down;
Well, they were asked to band together, but if that’s what this is, then it’s probably too little, too late, I’m afraid.
*Now it’s just Uran and Betancur behind Nibali;

They are riding through a veritable blizzard at the top of this climb. It is freezing and their visibility must be awful.
The tifosi are starting to crowd the road a little too much; in spots they swarm around Nibali, jostling him, almost knocking him over. The mountain road scouts have been doing an excellent job really, of keeping the riders safe on this road, it’s just the overwhelming pride and joy these fans are experiencing…

*They’re inside 2k to go now.
Scarponi is falling back, losing some time;
Evans finds a surge and pulls up alongside Duarte; they’re catching up with Btancur and Uran!
Atapuma is back with Pozzovivo, Scarponi, Pellizotti, a Katusha rider, and Weening. I don’t see Niemiec now. There has been no sign of Santambrogio for a long time now. He would be hoping to cling on to a top-10 spot.

-1.5k Nibali is pedaling away; He does not look like he will be caught. His pace is steady and strong.

-1.3k: Behind Nibali, Uran and Bretancur shed Evans and Duarte off their wheels; Evans is behind them, being picked up by the Scarponi/Pozzovivo group;

Uran and Betancur are riding well together. Maybe they will be together on different teams next year. You know what I mean.
Duarte is back with his compatriots again. This must be driving the Colombian fans wild!

1k to go: Nibali, Nibali, Nibali.
The fans are ecstatic. The Colombian triad is a couple hundred meters behind, not pedaling any faster than the Sicilian Shark.

Evans is fading back now. He looks done. He will keep fighting though, to preserve his podium spot.

Betancur is yo-yoing a bit behind Uran and Duarte.
The blizzard is blinding white at the top of the Tre Cime. Nibali makes his way up through the whiteout to the finish line, Duarte is second, :16 later. Ok, they’re saying :17.

Italy got their heroic win, The Shark of the Strait got a mountain road stage win, his second consecutive stage win, and barring some phenomenological catastrophe, will win the 96th Giro d’Italia when he crosses the finish line in Brescia tomorrow—under much nicer skies, no doubt.
The inimitable, inedible Italian Hero
The win also moves Nibali into the lead in the points competition, by 11 points over Cavendish. The Manx Missile will have to grab a high finish tomorrow. On a flat sprint, do you think he can do it? It’s extremely unlikely that Nibali would sprint tomorrow just to try and win the points jersey, so as long as Cav finishes in a top 5 or 6 spot--and with any intermediate points he might add along the way—Cav should take it back.

It looks like Evans preserved enough time to keep the third podium spot, but it is Uran who will be 2nd overall.
Betancur did his job and will win the young rider competition. A good sign of a future GC leader.

Betancur wins White in the whiteout

Sammy Sanchez suffered and lost his top-10 spot
