TDF Stage 18 Race Report and Results 2014 Tour De France

STAGE 18 REPORT:

Stage 18 on the map
145.5k from Pau to Hautacam; Hi mtns; summit finish;
Weather: Mostly sunny; 76f at low elevation, and about 60f up at the finish; [Thunderstorms were forecast for later in the day, but they never came.]

Abandoned: Heinrich Haussler (stomach bug)

The 2014 Tour De France raced its last day in the mountains today, conquering the Hors Categoie Pyrenean climbs of the famed Tourmalet, and the perhaps infamous Hautacam. The Tourmalet is a classic Tour big-mountain favorite, and is the highest pass in the Pyrenees at 2115 meters. Among this year's riders, men who have led the race over the 17k-long climb include Thomas Voeckler, Jeremy Roy and Sylvain Chavanel. The winners on the Hautacam however, now look like a who's who of doped cyclists. Leaving their names aside for now, we can only hope and trust that today's winner will not have his name one day expunged from the record books.

Vincenzo Nibali may look unbeatable, but a great battle for the overall podium positions and the king of the mountains jersey would be on the menu for stage 18...

Stage 18 profile; the last of the mountains

The peloton were fortunate to race on dry roads under sunny skies all day, despite the predicted afternoon thunderstorms. A 20-rider break formed early, and built a four-minute lead...

The break included:
Trofimov, Nieve, Bakelants, Wyss, Izaguirre, Herrada, Chavanel, Voeckler, De Marchi, Marcato, Guillou, Oss, Reza, Machado, Huzarski, Ladagnous, Kadri, Coquard, Boom, and Simon.

With 100k left to ride, the leaders entered the High Pyrenees, on their way to the Tourmalet. The lead came down to 3:25 under the pressure being put on the front of the peloton by Vincenzo Nibali's Astana team.

At km 61.5 (84k to go), Brian Coquard won the Intermediate sprint from the break, and the rest of the large break group gobbled up the rest of those points. The peloton, led by Nibali's Astana team, kept the gap manageable at around 3:30 to 3:45 all the way to the start of the HC Tourmalet climb.

The peloton climbed two big HC mountain climbs on Thursday's stage 18
The Tourmalet is officially 17.1k at 7.3% and climbs up to 2115m. Several kms of climbing precede the actual start. The first 5k have the lowest grades, then it kicks up to 8-10% for most of the rest of the climb.

The peloton passed thru Sante-Marie-de-Campann, at the foot of the Tourmalet, where Eugene Christophe famously stopped to weld his broken bicycle in 1913. Sylvain Chavanel (OPQ) was the first to attack at the foot of the mountain. Blel Kadri (ALM) and Mikel Nieve (SKY) broke free next, and passed Chavanel, with about 60k left to ride, and about 10k to go to the summit of the Tourmalet. Joaquim Rodriguez, Katusha's KOM favorite until yesterday, was one of the first to drop off the peloton from the high pace being set.

Kadri and Nieve led the race all the way up the Tourmalet, and crossed the summit in that order. Behind them, Yuri Trofimov, Bartosz Huzarski, and Alessandro De Marchi (who made his fourth early breakaway of the race) had attacked the peloton, and followed the two leaders over the summit 1:39 behind them. The peloton crossed over at +4:34.

From the Tourmalet summit, with about 50k left to race, Alejandro Valverde accelerated away from the Nibali group, and charged downhill at a furious pace. His two teammates from the break (Izaguirre and Herrada) sat up to help the Spanish time trial champion try to build a gap before the final climb to the finish.  The move never paid off, as the mere ten-second gap Valverde built was wiped away at the foot of the descent, about 10k before the Hautacam climb.

The peloton had to ride through headwinds on the way to the Hautacam, and the Astana-led peloton closed the gap to Nieve and Kadri down to about 1:30 as they hit the foot of the final climb. The Trofimov/De Marchi chase group in between, had grown to six riders (with Bakelants among them), only about 20 seconds ahead of the peloton, and trailing the two leaders by 1:09.

The Hautacam is an HC climb, listed at 13.6k with a 7.8% average gradient, and a max of around 11.3%. The steepest sections are about two-thirds of the way up (btw 7k and 2k to go).

Riders were spread out all over the climb, when race radio announced that JJ Rojas (MOV) had been disqualified from the race for excessive drafting behind a motor vehicle.

At 12k to go, Nieve dropped Kadri, and went up the road, in the lead alone.
Many riders were cracking on the climb. At 10.5k to go, Chris Horner launched an optimistic attack from the Yellow Jersey Group. Nibali immediately grabbed onto the 42-year old American's wheel, and the two rode away from the rest of the GC contenders. Nibali's last teammate, Michele Scarponi had just pulled off. It seemed to be an interesting move by Nibali, since Horner (18th overall) was almost 35 minutes behind the Shark on GC, and 10k of climbing remained. But the Shark of Messina was not done impressing his dominance on the race...

[I give Nibali a lot of credit for this move. He could easily have just followed the wheels of Valverde, Pinot and Peraud, or wait till late in the climb to make a move, but he chose to attack with 10k still to go. His lead over AV in the overall was already over five minutes. A win with another gap of a minute or so would mean a relatively easy, relaxed ITT for Nibali in Bergerac on Saturday.

The six-man chase group in the gap splintered on the Hautacam, as Alejandro Valverde's Movistar team led the chase from the group of GC contenders. Nibali and Horner passed Kadri inside of 9k to go, and the Frenchman winner of stage 8's day was done. Mikel Nieve still led up the road, but the Spaniard was doomed. He had the strongest man in the race cruising up the mountain behind him, hoping to bag a win in the Pyrenees. Nibali looked like he was riding an uphill TT. Horner never had a chance either, once Nibs went with him. At -9.3k the Shark took his opportunity to bite back at the man who bested him last year in Spain, and he flew away from Horner like he'd just stolen his wallet.

Nibali chased Valverde down the Tourmalet descent

Rafal Majka attacked the GC peloton next. He broke away on his second attempt. The polka dot jersey leader came into the stage with a 31-point advantage over Nibali in the KOM competition. With 50 points available for the winner on the Hautacam summit, by my calculations, If Nibali won the stage, Majka would have to finish in 6th place or better to keep the jersey (despite the fact that Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwin insisted it was third place or higher).

*Nibali caught Nieve with 8k to go, and took the lead on the road. As soon as he rode up to the SKY rider, he went into overdrive, keeping his head down, not even glancing at Nieve, and he powered away uphill.

By now the GC group was down to 14 riders, and had swallowed up Horner.  They were not gaining ground on Nibali, but they were thinning their own ranks on the climb. Inside 7k to go, Majka passed the fading Nieve, and went in pursuit of the mountain points to keep Nibali from stealing the jersey away.

profile of the HC finish climb

Nibali was closing in on 6k to go, still driving a quick pace, when an inattentive fan, with her back to the race, and apparently trying to get on TV, stepped out into the road and stuck her elbow out right in front of Nibali. The veteran climber duly rode right through the elbow, startling the girl and making her drop her phone.

She literally could have knocked the leader right out of the race with that stupid, thoughtless move. I am really dumbfounded that people continue to act so stupidly. I'm sure she'll be all over Twitter tonight. Maybe she was a Spanish spy placed there by Team Movistar... Hmmm.

The GC group (down to a dozen), was full of familiar faces: Jeannesson, Pinot, Valverde, Van Garderen, Schleck, Zubeldia, Mollema, Ten Dam, Kruijswijk (3 for Belkin!), Konig, Peraud, and Bardet. They caught Nieve inside of 6k to go, and Tejay Van Garderen upped the pace, dismissing Belkin and FDJ domestiques Kruijswijk and Jeannesson.

*At -5.5k FDJ leader Thibaut Pinot attacked, pulling TVG and Jean-Christophe Peraud with him, away from the rest, and cracking Schleck and Zubeldia. Then Valverde started to yo-yo off the back. He got into his own rhythm and continued to fight for his second place overall standing.

The battle for the podium was on.

As the road leader, Nibali approached the 5k to the summit marker, Majka was chasing him at +:40; and TVG, JCP and Pinot were at +1:30;

Inside 4k to go, Majka was losing time to Nibali, while the three chasers were closing the gap to Majka. Pinot really upped the ante at 3k to go. He knew that he could take 2nd place overall if he could finish within eight seconds of Peraud, and 35 seconds ahead of Valverde.

For his part, Peraud knew he would need 42 seconds over Valverde to take over third place, dropping AV from the podium. A nine-second gap at the line to Pinot could thrust the 37-year old veteran into second overall.
At this point, they were riding right around those time splits.

The charging trio caught up with Majka as Nibali had 2.3k to go. Nibs would not be caught, and he finished the stage 1:10 ahead of his nearest rival, grabbing his fourth stage win of the race. (He took a stage in each of the mountain ranges the race visited.)
Rafal Majka put in his bid to win the KOM jersey

Majka corralled the last of his energy to sprint past Tejay, Pinot and Peraud, going for second place, but then Pinot jumped out of the saddle, punching at the pedals with his last effort, looking for every second he could put between him and his rivals. Majka watched as Pinot purloined the stage's second podium place from the pooped Pole.

Nibali defended the maillot jaune, and extended his lead to over seven minutes with his stage-18 performance on the Hautacam. I am too superstitious to mention what it would take to keep him from clinching the overall race win in Paris.

Majka finished 3rd, enough to secure the polka dot jersey for Tinkoff Saxo. After losing their formidable leader Berto Contador on stage 10, Bjarne Riis' team has managed a very successful Tour De France. Majka alone won the KOM jersey, two big mountain stages (14 and 17), and also had two other stage-podium finishes. Mick Rogers also won a big stage, and Nicolas Roche was instrumental in animating the race, and contributing a lot to his team's successes.

Only two cat-4s remain to be climbed, one at the end of stage 19, and the other early on stage 21, so Majka's 13-point lead is enough to secure the KOM jersey.

Peter Sagan locked up the points jersey. Can he finally nab a stage win tomorrow?

Pinot moves up to second place overall; Peraud is up to third, and Valverde is down to fourth, but just 15 seconds separates them. The long stage 20 ITT will be the decisive stage, as expected.

Pierre Rolland fell out of the top ten on GC today, and Haimar Zubeldia moved into 10th place. Rolland's misfortune may have brought some amusement to Peter Stetina's ears. The American BMC rider blamed Rolland for knocking him off the road and into a ditch on the final climb.

My pick for Stage 19:

Stage 19 offers the second-to-last opportunity for a bunch sprint finish. Sagan is still looking for a stage win, and tomorrow would probably be his best chance. Kittel will be the favorite on the Champs-Elysees, and Sagan is likely to have survived the mountains better than most sprinters. Coquard has been racing extremely well, and is also winless so far...and I am tempted to pick Kristoff or Greipel, because their supporting casts look strong, and they're awesome...

...but I am going with Greg Van Avermaet of BMC. It's not really the optimal stage suited to his classics style, but he has been close a few times, and he stayed strong through the mountains. He climbs well for a big fast man, and is in the top 40 on GC, but I think he would love to take a stage win for his team. There is no reason why BMC shouldn't let him go for it again, since Tejay's GC position is totally contingent on his TT performance on Saturday.

Nibali extended his lead to 7:10, and won his fourth stage of this year's Tour
