TDF Stages 1 and 2 Reports and Results 2014 Tour De France

Stage 1:

The race start in Leeds
(Saturday July 5, 2014): 190k through Yorkshire (northerly loop from Leeds to Harrogate- mostly flat, constant low undulations); Sunny, mid-60s;
PREDICTION: Cavendish/Kittel.

After the opening neutral kms, the royal family ceremoniously came out from Harewood House and greeted the star riders at the front of the paused peloton. They chatted, cut the ribbon, and the race began for real.

The 3-man stage 1 break

3-man break from the gun: Jens Voigt (TFR-now 42 (nearing 43), oldest in race), N. Edet (COF), and Benoit Jarrier (BSE).

SPR finish- Cancellara tried a late break for the line, but got caught;

All 198 riders finished.*

*After a good OPQ lead-out, Cav and Gerrans bump shoulders in the finale* (Gerrans is then bumped back toward Cav by Coquard), Cav and Gerrans go down hard, also (a Cofidis rider behind Gerrans goes down, too) Modolo?;
Cavendish crosses the finish line, but becomes the first rider out of the race.

Local favorite is first to fail

*Cav admits fault, and apologizes to Gerrans.

**Huge crowds estimated at over 1 to 1.5 million on the roads (but several riders complain that spectators were too careless, blocking the road, taking pics, etc).

The royals were at the finish to hand out prizes as well.

Brief results:

Giant's Kittel capitalizes on Cav crash

Kittel wins stg 1, takes the yellow jersey, and the points jersey.
Sagan and Navardauskas fill out the stage podium.
Froome finishes an impressive 6th in the sprint.

Jens Voigt takes KOM Jersey.
Sagan leads the young riders.

Defending champ, Chris Froome will be closely inspected

Stage 2:

DNS: Mark Cavendish (OPQ)

[I dedicate this post to the Manx Missile, Mark Cavendish, who will not have the opportunity to enjoy the rest of the Tour, especially these stages in his homeland.]

The Stage 2 Profile shows nine categorized climbs

201k, From York [west, and south-Southeast] to Sheffield, partly cloudy, low 60's;
Sawtooth/Rolling; 9 categorized climbs: three cat-4s, five cat-3s, and a cat-2 over 201 kms. Fun!
Marcel Kittel, Jens Voigt, and Tom Dumoulin, pre-race
(Flat finish after an 800m 10.8% Avg bump tops at -5k [Jenkin Road] and has some nasty grades).
Prediction: Sagan/Albasini; Longshot pick: Grivko.

[Voigt really hammed it up in Steve Schlanger interview before stage 2. Discussing his imminent retirement, he aped Dr. Evil, complete with pinky in corner of mouth, and teased that his KOM jersey showed that he is the strongest climber in the race, so he wants a team to offer him a million dollars to race next year... He is the oldest ever to wear the polka dots.]

6-man break forms early: Quemeneur (EUC), Kadri (ALM), Busche (TFR), Lemoine (COF), De La Cruz (TNE), Fonseca (BSE)...soon joined by Bart De Clerq (LTB), to make 7 in the break. They quickly build a lead over 2:30.

*km 47: Lemoine takes 1st cat-4 climb (Cote de Blubberhouses; 1.8k at 6.1%) for 1 KOM point.
-152k for leaders: Peloton at +3:33:
Tangled crash in peloton: Huzarski down, waits for tech help. Westra, Gerrans, a couple other NET-APP riders, a COFIDIS... No one hurt. TVG held up for bike change...

-140k: Lampre rider down.
-137k: Another slow, tangled crash in the crowded peloton, stalls Mollema.
-135k: Lead down to 2:14 as Mollema rejoins Pel. with 2 teammates.

*-132.5k (km 68.5): INT SPR (in Keighley) is not contested by the break, they take the first seven spots;
1:38 later, the Sprint contenders contest for the remaining INT sprint points: 8th place=8 pts; 9th gets 7; 10th gets 6; 11th gets 5; down to 1 point for 15th place at the INT: Coquard takes 8th, then Kristoff, Greipel, Sagan...

1. Kadri  2. De La Cruz  3. Quemeneur  4. Busche  5. Fonseca  6. De Clercq  7. Lemoine  8. Coquard  9. Kristoff  10. Greipel  11. Sagan  12. Reza  13. Porsev  14. Viviani  15. Sabatini

[Paul Sherwin comments that Kittel doesn't like to bother with the INT's.]
*A GIA rider on left side of road nailed an inattentive photo-snapping spectator's elbow with his shoulder approaching the INT point (the guy was standing idiotically in the road). You guys realize that those cyclists you are gawking at are SPEEDING RIGHT TOWARD YOU, right?

Nine categorized climbs on stage 2
-125k: The lead is back up to 2:02.

*km 85 (-116k): 2nd climb: Cat-3 Cote d'Oxenhope Moor (3.1k at 6.4%):
Quemeneur breaks first, and gets a big gap on the other leaers...
1. Quemeneur  2. Lemoine

-110k: Leaders have 3:17 on the peloton.
König, bike change.

-103k: minor crash in feed zone: Acevedo, De Kort wait for assistance.
Stetina lost his derailleur...
-92.6k: Demare wheel change.
(Another jackass with a long lens gets his camera swatted by Niki Terpstra as he rides by in the peloton.)

-89k: Busche attacks on the way to the 3rd KOM summit; He is chased hard...
*3rd KOM:  Cat-3 Cote de Ripoonden; (1.3k at 8.6%)
1. Lemoine  2. De La Cruz

[More riders swatting at the over-eager English who can't help themselves but continue stepping into the road. Despite the large, generous crowds, if I were a cyclist I would not want to come back to England for a race of this magnitude. The spectators are too willing to risk the riders'  lives--and livelihood--just to grab a blurry snapshot of the peloton to show their mum.]

-83k: lead is 1:39.

BMC send Burghardt to the front of the peloton to set pace. Garmin has a few up front, too.
Modolo and Richeze (both LAM) struggling off the back, on the short climb.

*-81.5k: KOM 4: Cat-3 Cote de Greetland (1.6k at 6.7%);
Lemoine outsprints De La Cruz at the line to take the virtual KOM Jersey lead, with 6 points (Voigt, in 2nd now, has 4 pts, Quemeneur and De La Cruz each have 2).
1. Lemoine  2. De La Cruz

-65k: Porte and Roche minor crash: stalled for bike changes. Porte had to wait much longer than NR.

-63k: Kittel is yelling and gesturing at someone in front of the bunch.
The peloton is closing in on the break... just about +:15 now.
Kadri tries to go it alone...
Lemoine and Fonseca chase him in earnest; the others give up the ghost and get swept up.

Onto the 5th climb; Cat-2 Cote de Holme Moss (4.7k at 7%):

-62k: Pate has dropped back to help pace Porte back up to the peloton. Eisel comes back, too.
Ahead, Kadri and Lemoine drop Fonseca.

Andrew Talansky of Garmin Sharp is one of the American GC hopefuls
-61k: As Fonseca gets swallowed up by the bunch, Voeckler (TV) attacks on the cat-2 climb.
Up front now Kadri is pushing on alone...Lemoine gets caught, but then Cofidis immediately send out his teammate (Edet?) on the attack.

-60k: Kadri holds a :22 lead.
~2k to the summit, Tony Martin and Burghardt jump out, too.

*-58.8k: TV catches Kadri in front, on a steep part. Then loses his wheel...
Just before the summit, Edet catches and passes TV.
Kadri summits first.

*-57.5k: KOM 5: Cat-2 Cote de Holme Moss (4.7k at 7%);
1. Kadri [5 pts]  2. Edet [3 pts]  3. Voeckler [2 pts] 4. Martin [1 point].
+1:15 to the SKY-led peloton over the summit.

-51.5k:
A 5-man chase group forms, with Cofidis' Edet (NE), Europcar 'sVoeckler (TV) and Gautier for, Tony Martin (TM) for OPQ, and Burghardt for BMC. They chase Kadri now at about +:24.
The main peloton is at about +1:02; and Kittel, in the Yellow Jersey, is in a 13-man group, more than two minutes behind the main bunch.

-50k: Kadri has :32 (and growing) on the 5 chasers and 1:05 on the peloton--now led by Cannondale.

-40k: About 3 or 4k to the 6th climb of the day;

-36k: During the TV break, the peloton picked up the 5-man chase group, and then at -36k, They pick up the erstwhile leader, Kadri.
Gruppo Compatto.

Garmin leads the peloton to the top of the 6th KOM:
*-34k: KOM 6: Cat-3 Midhopestones (2.5k at 6.1%):
1.  Slagter GRS  2.  Talansky GRS

Yellow Jersey group summits at +7:37.

8k to the next summit (Bradfield; Cat-4)

SKY take over driving leading to the Bradfield cat-4 climb, Astana are right up there for Nibali, too...

-26k: Grivko is 1st over the 7th KOM, for 1 pt.

-19k: KOM 8: Cat-3 Oughtibridge; (1.5k at 9.1%)
EUR showing presence up front (Gautier +1), and Chris Horner is there for Lampre!
Rolland pushes up and takes the KOM ahead of JC Peraud.
1. Rolland  2. Peraud

PR and JCP push on, and build a gap...
-14k: lead is :15.

[Final climb up Jenkin Road hits 33% on one of the turns...]
-13.7k: Peraud pulls off, and Rolland goes on alone.

Rolland is first under 10k to go...
Cannondale are leading the chase now for Sagan.

-8.5k: Rolland looks back at the fast-closing peloton, and sits up.
* -8k: Gruppo Compatto.

A couple OGE teammates lead Albasini up toward the front (he's my pick today);
SKY, EUR, AST and CAN all working to stay in front...

1 OGE teammate remains up front for Albasini, then a SKY rider, and Cannondale--with Sagan sitting in 5th wheel.

-7k: The pace gets high before the climb...

The GC favorites attacked on Jenkin Road
*-5.8k: -Onto the Jenkin Rd climb (800m @ 10.8%):
The heavy hitters are moving to the front now...
One Cannondale leader in front...but Sagan has lost his wheel...Albasini is in 2nd wheel...then, here comes CONTADOR, NIBALI, FROOME, Sagan, and Van Den Broecke...
The GC contenders are taking this seriously.

-5.5k: Contador (AC) takes to the front.

Tejay Van Garderen (TVG) is getting on terms; a MOVISTAR jersey is also moving up with the leaders (is it Valverde?)...
The Cannondale lead-out rider pulls off...
Guys like Mick Rogers and Simon Gerrans are falling off the back...

Contador leads a group of about 15-20 elite riders up the steep, short hill: After AC, it's Nibali--with Astana teammate Fuglsang a few wheels back; then Froome, Albasini (now looking a little tired), Sagan, Van Den Broecke--with a LTB teammate? Gallopin? then Tejay--with a BMC teammate (maybe Van Avermaet or Stetina?),  then Valverde for MOV, then Peraud, I think it must be, for ALM,  Mollema for Belkin,  Konig for TNE--No, it's Machado; and World Champ Rui Costa, and either Busche or maybe Zubeldia in there...and if that's an OPQ jersey, I'm thinking Kwiatkowski may have made the cut as well...I may have missed one or two.

-5.2k: As AC gives over driving duty to Sagan, Froome attacks!
He's chased hard by TVG, Contador, Nibali, Valverde, Sagan, then Fuglsang, JVDB, Machado...
Bardet is the ALM rider nearer to the front, but Peraud is not far behind...
Talansky is also in there...

Froome leads the GC leaders over the final climb of the day, and gets 1 KOM point.
*km 196: KOM 9: cat-4 Jenkin Road (800m @ 10.8%):
1. Froome  2. TVG

-4.6k: Fuglsang attacks! He is chased down by Froome and Tejay;
-4.2k: Sagan takes to the front on the descent, and punches it on the next false flat...
Sagan is flying around the technical turns leading into town, but they're on his wheel. Although he is stretching out the group now...

*-2.7k: Fuglsang attacks again!
He looks back to see Greg Van Avermaet on his wheel, and JVDB closing in.
They come back together again.

The leaders all look around, marking each other...

About 20 riders remain to fight for the win...
-2k: Bardet attacks, chased by Tony Gallopin. Sagan catches on, too. Then Valverde helps bring it all back together.

-1.9k: As they all look around again, Nibali launches a big attack on the left side of the road. The Shark is given some berth, and he uses it to push further upstream. The others are marking each other, and not chasing Nibali down with any concerted effort!

-1k: Nibali goes under the red kite with at least an :08 lead.
Finally, Kwiatkowski, Van Avermaet and Sagan launch their sprints behind the Italian...but it's too late to catch the Sicilian.

Vincenzo Nibali, the Shark of Messina, gets his first-ever TDF stage win! And the Astana leader does it in style, with his new Italian Tricolori on his back. He will also take the Maillot Jaune for his efforts as well.
(That ought to keep Vino off his back for a while.)

Van Avermaet and Kwiatkowski round out the day's podium.

DNF: Sacha Modolo (COF)-another talented stage hunting fast-man who will be missed.

A difficult, and hard-fought stage that lasted over five hours and included very few flats, has been won by a dangerous GC threat who nobody was paying enough attention to. Nibali may have had a weak spring (his best 2014 results before the Italian Championships were a 5th place on GC at the Tour of Romandie, and 7th overall at the Dauphiné) but never underestimate his huge talent--he won the 2013 Giro d'Italia and the 2010 Vuelta a Espana, and finished 2nd overall at the Vuelta a Espana last year; he was also 3rd overall at the 2012 Tour De France, and has had other Grand Tour podium finishes as well. He just recently won the Italian National Road Race Championship, and has had several strong results in some one-day Classics that might easily be compared to a stage like today's.

Any way you look at it, we saw a great race today, and the overall contenders have wasted no time in showing their calculated intentions, and high ambitions.
Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!

Kudos to all the wonderful support the British fans have been showing, but I also hope they will get the message tonight, and keep out of the riders' way tomorrow for the final UK stage into London.

Brief Results follow...
