TDF Stage 9 Report Results and Standings 2014 Tour De France

STAGE 9 Report:

Stage 9 on the map

170k Continuing through the Vosges, from Gérardmer to Mulhouse.
Mountains; flat finish.

Six categorized climbs today, the last summit comes with about 40k to go to the finish (20k of descending, and the final 20k are flat).
Weather: overcast with chance of rain; mid 60s f.

Today should favor a breakaway.

Right from the gun, the pace is high...
Peter Sagan is an early escapee. He's reeled in soon however.
Brice Feillu gets a gap.

Halfway up the first climb, about 25 riders are out ahead of the pack now.
Purito Rodriguez and Thomas Voeckler are working hard in the break.

Stage 9 profile
*km 11.5: 1st KOM (cat-2):
Thomas Voeckler was first over the Col de la Schlucht.
1. Voeckler  2. Edet  3. Rodriguez  4. Dumoulin

The peloton are pulling back the chasers at the top of the climb.
Voeckler has moved into second place in the King of the Mountains jersey competition.

*Tony Martin (OPQ) and Alessandro De Marchi (CAN) have escaped, and at km 35 they have a :20 lead. 15-20 other riders are chasing them, and the peloton is about 1:15 back.

TO READ ON, JUST CLICK THE TINY WORDS "Read more" just below these words...

*km41: De Marchi and Martin top the 2nd KOM (cat-3) first and second.
De Marchi has been vocal about his desire to compete for the KOM jersey.

-120k: 2 groups of chasers are behind the 2 leaders on the road, and then the peloton chases at about +2:00. Several riders are also off the back.

This is shaping up to be a very lively stage.

Many familiar names in the 28-man chasing group that has formed behind the 2 leaders, including Machado, Gallopin, Cancellara, Edet, Montaguti, Chavanel, Pate, Rolland, Meier...

Nibali and Sagan chat before stage 9

-107k: Lars Boom has jumped out of the chase group.

NBCSN goes to break just before the leaders reach the summit. Brilliant.

km70: 3rd KOM; cat-3:
1. De Marchi  2. Martin

The chasers go over about :45 behind.
The Europcar riders have been doing the bulk of the work at the head of the chase.

-89k: Albasini, mechanical.
Kadri is suffering off the back of the peloton after all that work he did yesterday.

Martin and De Marchi lead onto the 4th climb of the day.
-87k: The leaders have a 1:38 gap over the 28-man chase group, and 4:35 over the peloton.

De Marchi leads Martin over the top of the 4th climb.
*km86: 4th KOM; cat-2:
1. De Marchi  2. Martin  3. Rodriguez  4. Edet

And with that, De Marchi passes Voeckler to claim second place in the KOM comp.
Gallopin, in the chase group, is the virtual yellow jersey leader, as he comes into the stage in 11th place overall. He trails Nibali by 3:27 on GC.

-83.25k: Purito attacks the chase group approaching the 4th KOM summit. He'll take 3rd place, for 2 KOM points. I think he wants to keep the KOM jersey option open.

-71.2k: The entire Astana team are stacked at the front of the peloton.
The peloton pick up Reza and Chavanel from the middle chase group.

It has been sunny for a while. Nicer than expected.

km 105: De Marchi gives Martin the intermediate sprint as he has been taking the KOMs.
*-65k: INT:
1. Martin  2. De Marchi  3. Pichot  4. Quemeneur  5. Montaguti  6. Cherel  7. Rolland  8. Gautier  9. Edet  10. T. Dumoulin  11. Van Avermaet  12. Meier  13. Navarro  14. Koren  15. Gallopin

Climb statistics for Stage 9
I had a feeling a time trial expert like Martin might try today. Several good ones made today's break. I think I mentioned it in my preview yesterday. If he can get over the last summits with any kind of a lead, he'll have a good chance of outpacing most cyclists to the finish.

-60k: The 2 leaders have 2:36 on the chasers, and 6:33 on the peloton, as they ride on to the fifth of the day's six categorized climbs. This is the first cat-1 of the race: the 1183-meter high Le Markstein is 10.8k at 5.4%. This is the first time this climb has been included in the Tour de France.

Astana, Movistar, and Katusha are all lined up at the front of the peloton, as they prepare for the day's big climb.
After the summit of the Markstein comes a few kms of descending and rolling to the last climb of the day: the cat-3 Grand Ballon. It's a short 1.4k at a steep 8.6%, and tops out at 1336 meters of elevation. Then it's mostly downhill to Cernay, where fast descending skills will come into play, before 20kms of fast racing to the finish in Mulhouse.

*-59k: Martin accelerates away from De Marchi.
I thought he would wait till later up the climb, but he may have thought it's time to go and see how much time advantage he can get before the veritable TT to the finish.

-58k: Geraint Thomas and Matthew Busche get tangled up and have to get straightened out.
Garmin show up at the front of the peloton. The lead has been fairly constant for a while.
The peloton trail by 6:45 with 56k to go.

*-54k: Rain is falling all over the race now.
Tony Martin is the lone leader on the wet road.
De Marchi is chasing him at +:55.
The Rolland/Gallopin chase group is at 2:43; they have dropped a few riders, and now are 21. Pichot (EUR) is soon swept up by the peloton.

This mountain summits at 50k to go to the finish.
Martin prepares to go over the top first.
Big , excited crowds up here, lining the road.

The riders in the chase group get animated toward the KOM line...
De Marchi manages to hold off the chasers and summit second...
Purito and Edet have a good sprint for third.

*km 120: (-50k): 5th KOM; cat-1 Le Markstein (10.8k at 5.4%):
1. Martin  2. De Marchi  3. Rodriguez  4. Edet  5. Feillu  6. Machado

Martin out-paced the chase group on the last climb!
The German TT World Champ is on the final climb now.

De Marchi is pumping his all into the pedals, as he tries to hold off the chasing group for one more KOM point...
...But Purito shoots out and passes De Marchi in the last few hundred meters to steal the last KOM point of the day.
I guess he's going for the KOM jersey after all.

Purito was 2:36 behind Martin over the summit.
De Marchi crossed over about twenty seconds behind Rodriguez.

Tony Martin will be the new King of the Mountains at the end of today's stage 9.
Joaquim Rodriguez has stated his intent.

Tony Gallopin leads the chase
-35k: +2:54 to the first chase group.
+7:45 to the peloton.

Tony Gallopin (LTB) begins an earnest chase on the big descent. He has a small gap right away.
This side of the mountain is dry for the descent. It is cloudy, but not raining now.

19k to go:
Martin lands at the bottom of the descent with a 3:00 lead over the first two chasers, Gallopin and Mikel Cherel (ALM).
The GC peloton trail by 8:13.

Barring an unexpected catastrophe, Martin should be able to finish off these flats and take the win. Tony Gallopin will take the yellow jersey if he can maintain his lead over the peloton.

The skies ahead look Balefully dark, though the sun is shining on Tony Martin as his pistons pump away, in a deliberate and regular rhythm. No one is within three minutes of him.

-10k: Astana has been leading the peloton chase, putting on a show of trying to protect their yellow jersey, but I believe they'd rather surrender the responsibility for now. They may allow Gallopin just enough rope to take a small lead, and win the jersey...and all the media attention for the day.

Rolland, Machado and Gallopin particularly, will race for every second advantage they can get on the GC guys.  Rolland came into the stage in 23rd place overall, 7:34 off the lead. This could help pull him back up toward the top 10.

Tiago Machado and the remaining Europcar guys are sharing the work at the head of the chase, trying to pull Gallopin back. They catch him inside 9k to go. So 20 riders make up chase group one, again.

Martin has 7.2k to go as the chasers pass under the 10k-to go banner.
The chasers have not been able to pull any time back from Martin. He's even slowly gaining on them.

-5k: Martin leads by 3:11 to the nearest chasers. Over eight minutes to the GC peloton.

-2k: same situation. In fact, the gap to the peloton is growing.

Martin will have plenty of time to celebrate on the run-in to the finish.
He actually turns and looks over his shoulder, to see no one coming at all. He kisses his hands and throws them up in celebration. He grins and points his thumbs at his chest: yes, he did it all alone--and oh yeah, Omega Pharma-Quickstep is his sponsor's name there...

This is Tony Martin's first career road win at the Tour.

The Gallopin/Rolland group comes in at +2:45. They go into a bunch sprint...
Cancellara pips Van Avermaet to take second on the stage.

About 8:00 back down the road... Astana is driving the peloton...
Nibali will certainly [happily] give up the race lead to Tony Gallopin today.

Gallopin will likely not be around to contest the high mountains, where the top GC contenders will distance all the pretenders.

The peloton ride over the finish at +7:46.

Tony Martin is selected as the most combative rider of the day.
He also takes over as King of the Mountains.

DNF: Egoitz Garcia Etxeguibel of Cofidis

Tony Martin grabs another stage win for OPQ

STAGE 10 PREVIEW:

Tomorrow is the first real mountaintop finish...and it's Bastille Day. On paper, it will be the toughest stage so far. It should be a good GC battle before the first rest day on Tuesday. Seven categorized climbs are featured on stage 10. Four of them are category-1 climbs, including the summit finish atop the Planche des Belles Filles (5.9k at 8.5%).

In 2012 Chris Froome won on this finish, and his teammate Bradley Wiggins took the Maillot Jaune, on his way to a dominant Tour win in Paris. The climb has parts that max out up to grade-percentages in the teens, and is especially grueling at the top, where grades get as high as 28%! Time splits will start to get serious. If the GC contenders fight it out for the win, I would not expect them to attack each other with any ferocity until the final couple of kms.

Stage 10 profile. First summit finish of the race.

Escapees will include stage hunters and the mountain jersey hunters, and they will need good legs to get up and down all those mountains. If the GC climbers reel in the break, the best picks for tomorrow are the usual suspects: Contador, Valverde, Nibali, Porte, etc.

Other climbers who are looking strong now include Romain Bardet and Jean-Christophe Peraud of AG2R. Peraud is the proven veteran, always capable of big results, but I think that Bardet may be underestimated by some of the older guys. The 23-year-old is climbing very well (he finished 5th at the Dauphiné), and he finished 15th at the Tour de France last year. He needs to work on his TT-ing (a skill which Peraud excels at), but he's got a lot of potential. With Bardet currently a minute ahead of his senior teammate, and riding in 10th overall right now, we may see a surprise in how the team chooses to proceed with them. Either way, AG2R has a nice one-two punch to use in the mountains, with the talented pair.

Not to be ignored are Bauke Mollema of Belkin, World Champ Rui Costa of Lampre, Jurgen Van Den Broeck of Lotto, Thibeau Pinot of FDJ, and the Americans Van Garderen and Talansky of BMC and Garmin, respectively. Many of these guys have taken some spills on the road, and their form in the mountains will show how they're recovering. I would expect some guys to drop out of contention tomorrow.

Monday being Bastille Day, I would expect fireworks from the French teams. Speaking more of AG2R, maybe we'll see Christophe Riblon give it another go on Bastille Day. He made the break last year.

I especially expect aggression from the Europcar team--particularly from the trio of Rolland, Voeckler, and Gautier.  And even more particularly, because rain is in the forecast for Monday, and how many times have we seen Voeckler go out and play in the rain?

FDJ (Jeremy Roy gave it a go on Bastille Day a couple years ago), Cofidis, and Bretagne-Seche also have several cards they can play tomorrow.

My pick to win stage 10: Alberto Contador.
Outside pick: If Movistar's 35-year old Frenchman John Gadret is allowed to leave Valverde's side, I'd love to see him go for it on stage 10.

Dream come true
