STAGE 5 Recap and Results 2013 Giro d'Italia

 ==================================================================

2013 Giro d’Italia  STAGE 5 recap  203 km, from Cosenza to Matera Wesnesday May 8

Dry at the start, but heavy rain was forecast for later on; lightning reportedly knocked out the broadcaster’s feed before the race went on air—fortunately they got it back up for us; [update: rain until about -30k, then mostly no rain to the end, but wet roads].

The stage is mostly flat with a short, punchy category 4 climb coming about 25km to the finish. Here is how the official race guide describes the rest of the finish: “Last kms descending slightly from -3 km to the final km, through wide urban avenues with some slight curves. Two left-hand [90-degree] curves either side of the flamme rouge lead to the final straight, 800 m, all slightly uphill (width 7.5 m, surfaced with asphalt).”

Pozzato told the press he feels good about today’s stage. It’s certainly a stage that seems to favor his abilities. Many people (including the bookies) favor Degenkolb for today’s finish. I like Goss or Ventoso (despite picking Viviani yesterday).

*After about 5km early break of 6 goes clear: Gil (AND), Pirazzi (BAR), Marangoni (CAN), Mestre (EUS), Bulgac (LTB), Andriato (VIN);
Gap quickly rises to abot 10 minutes;
[Urtasun abandoned]

*Pirazzi takes the  1st cat. 4 MT pts at about km 35, then sits up, drops from brk; Bulgac and Marangoni
 follow over in 2nd and 3rd.
-125k: gap to 5 leaders down to about 6:00; KAT leading pel. chase;
*Hard rain reported at the finish; long-term forecasts for the race see more rain;
Peloton in the sun for now;
* 1st INT Sprint: 1, Andriato 2. Marangoni, 3. Gil, 4. Mestre, 5. Bulgac;
-92k: OPQ takes over for KAT at the front of race, sprinter’s teams now chasing;
*Andriato takes the second INT, followed by Marangoni, Bulgac, Gil and Mestre;

*Raining heavily on the 5-man breakaway group now; back in the peloton some are donning their jackets in preparation; weather deteriorating; A river of water flowing over the finish line;
Paolini drops back to the team car;
-65k: rain very heavy at the fin. and on the break, and light rain on the peloton;
ARG to the front of pel.; OGE to the front also;
-60k: lead at -5:50;
Rain falling loudly in Brooklyn now, too;

Danny Lloyd is already speculating on the air that Wiggins may not have it for the GC and Uran could take over the Sky reins. I think it’s a little early to make that call.
It is quite dark over the break; shots of the coast show the very dark cloud mass hanging over the region; rivers of water flowing through “TV city” at the finish; thunder and lightning assailing the finish town of Matera;
[Kirby and Lloyd remind us that Wiggo had said he would never return to the GDT. Changes in management and course design inspired him to come back.]

-50k: lead down to 4:30;
Several riders giving their jackets back to their team cars, maybe a bit premature?
Shot of Pichon with bandaged face, after receiving stitches and two new teeth in stage-1 crash;
-40k: Breakaway riding into clearer skies, road drying; Lead down to 2:50;
Storm clearing at the finish
Andriato showing fatigue in the lead grp.
-35k: lead @ -2:30;   -30k @ -2:00

-27k: Clear and dry now; BMC, GRS, AST, MOV, VIN at the front looking for position going into the big turn at -25k that leads to the Montescaglioso climb. They’ve been riding on a wide 2-lane road, the road is only one lane on the 90-deg. right hand turn (highway exit)
*-23k: on the climb, Andriato and Pirazzi drop back into the peloton;
*Marangoni picked up, and finally at about -22k, it’s gruppo compatto.
Gavazzi out the back of the pel.

*Pirazzi attacks on the second, and last cat. 4, and beats Gastauer (ALM) for the 3 KOM pts. Visconti is 3rd.
Near top of climb, Cav is weaving in the back with some OPQ teammates helping;
Gastauer races down the technical descent, Robert Vrecer (EUS) on his wheel…
CRASH XXX? (MOV)
-15k: down onto flat road, Gastauer and Vrecer have about :15 lead;
-13.7k mech: Uran, Pate and Cataldo? stop to help;
-12.7k Attack: Bak (LTB); bridges to 2 leaders; now 3;
[Beautiful heli shots of Matera’s houses built into cliffs and caves]

Still in some sunshine, but roads are wet;
3-man lead working well together at -10k, lead about :15 or :20;
Pirazzi dropping back thru pel; Cav not present in 1st chasing pel.
*A few guys are attacking off the front of pel;
Tom D mech.
-8k: raining lightly again

* -7.7k leaders reeled in; Rabottini (VIN) attacks, road tilting up;
Felline clinging to the back of the group; *Rabottini pulled in.
-6k: Cav is in a grp :45 behind front group;
*-5.5k DuPont (69th at 9:39) attacks and is let go;
at -5k I make his lead :07;
-4k Gatto near the front of the chase; BMC lead now, protecting Evans;
Ventoso and Viviani move up;
-2.9k: Rabottini scooped up; gruppo compatto again.

So a lot of sprinters have made this lead group;
Battaglin and Navardauskas are there; Visconti, Quintero, Goss;
Front line mixed now; Degenkolb and Paolini are there;

*CRASH!: Coming around final 90-deg left hand bend, 2nd man on the front, Mezgec (ARG)—one of Degenkolb’s lead-out men, skids out and disrupts entire field behind him, smashes Ventoso into the barrier; several others go down behind him. Crash gives Canola (BAR), who was only man in front of the crash, a wide open run to the fin...
But wait, Degenkolb closing in from behind!
Canola pedaling for dear life inside the last 500m…400m… he’s fading;
Degenkolb barrels past Canola at -200m and wins by two bike lengths.

The oddsmakers must have breathed a sigh of relief when Degenkolb managed to escape that catastrophe at the end. He seemed to plunge out from the pile like a plane emerging from a thick, dark cloud.

Tomorrow I will begin displaying stats for the Trofeo Fuga Pinarello competition which rewards riders who take part in breakaways at the head of the field, each rider in an escape of ten or fewer riders getting one point for each kilometer that the group stays clear. It can be a lively competition within the race.
