Stage 18 Report 2013 Tour De France Alpe d'Huez Results

Stage 18 from Gap to Alpe d’Huez
172.5k high mountains, mountaintop finish.
Weather: Sunny, 70 f at the start; rain forecast for the later climbs.

The switchbacks of Alpe d'Huez can be seen in the  center
The peloton has made it through seventeen stages of racing. Now they have reached the most talked about stage of the Tour De France: the double climb of Alpe d’Huez. The stage has been looming in the minds of the team directors and their riders for months.

The descent of the Col de Sarenne is known to be rough, technical and perilously exposed. Chris Froome, for one, has publically insisted that the descent is too dangerous. Rain is in the forecast for the latter part of the race, and that has many riders worried. Froome suggested that the race organizers should remove the second climb of Alpe d’Huez, and finish on top of the first ascent, for safety reasons. Of course the race leader would like to get to Paris as soon as possible.

Stage 18 profile

It rained hard overnight, and more rain is expected on Alpe d’Huez later, but at the start line sun is shining on the riders as they wait to get on the road. This is a stage that could change some riders’ fortunes. Who will be first to the finish? And who will be left in the wake?

The Col de Sarenne
It has been reported that the organizers are considering the possibility of altering the course, if they deem the roads unnecessarily dangerous. The report is that they will make that decision on the road. I would not expect a change.

This course has been debated for quite some time now. If they thought rain itself would cause excessive danger, then they would not have planned this stage as such. Also, this is a professional bike race. And it is the Tour De France. The road is not covered in ice or packed with snow. Anyone scared of racing his bike should go home. That is just my opinion.

TO THE ACTION:

The riders have taken the start in Gap.
177 riders take the start today.

The route to Alpe d'Huez
Once again, Johnny Hoogerland of Vacansoleil, attacks right as the flag drops.
Jens Voigt is among the others trying to escape the main bunch.

Jesus Hernandez of Saxo-Tinkoff attacks on the first climb of the day, the 6.6k category-2 Col de Manse. The climb averages 6.2% grade and tops out at 1268 meters high. Some unlucky riders are already being dropped on the first climb.

Tejay Van Garderen of the struggling BMC team is looking to break away.
Saxo and Movistar are among the many attackers on the Col de Manse. The many attacks are splitting the peloton apart all over the climb. Froome is chasing down every move. This is already shaping up to be a very interesting stage.

Chris Froome is separated now from the rest of his teammates.

Today's climbs

Ryder Hesjedal is first over the summit.

*Km 13 KOM 1 cat-2 Col de Manse (6.6k at 6.2%):
1.    Hesjedal  2. Jeannesson 3. Voeckler  4. Gadret

The nine current leaders on the road are: Jeannesson (FDJ), Chavanel (OPQ), Van Garderen (BMC), Amador (MOV), Voigt (RSL), Boom (BEL), Moser (CAN), Riblon (ALM), and Danielson (GRS).

With 150k left to ride, their lead over the peloton is :26. The peloton is only about 50 riders strong right now, but plenty of regrouping will happen over the relatively easy next 60k.

-130k: The break’s lead has gone out to 5:42.

Alexey Lutsenko (AST) has abandoned the race. He was the youngest man left after Danny Van Poppel abandoned after stage 15.

Saxo Bank attack again on the second climb of the day. Roche and Paulinho jump out of the pack and race ahead. The lead group have already gone over six minutes ahead.

*Km 45 KOM 2 cat-3 Rampe du Motty (2.4k at 8%):
1.    Danielson  2. Riblon

Laurent Didier (RSL) has attacked out of the pack.

100k to go: The 9-man break has a gap of 5:15 over the 2 Saxo chasers, and 6:44 to the peloton. The peloton has regrouped, and is now a much larger bunch again.

-90k: the gap to the peloton has gone over seven minutes as the leaders near the stage’s midway point, and the base of the third climb of the day. The Col d’Ornon is 5.1k at 6.7% and tops out at 1371m. It is a cat-2 climb, and the descent that follows will take the riders through Bourg d’Oisans for the start of the first climb of Alpe d’Huez. The day’s intermediate sprint point is also in Bourg d’Oisans.

The 2 Saxo chasers had gotten within 4:45 of the leaders, but their gap is going out over five minutes again now.
The peloton trail by 7:35 as the leaders begin the third climb.

-80k: The peloton trails by over 8 minutes now. The 2 chasers are at +5:30.

*Km95: KOM 3 cat-2 Col d’Ornon (5.1k at 6.7%):
1.    Jeannesson  2. Chavanel  3. Voigt  4. Danielson

The chasers go over 6:06 behind the break; the peloton at +8:05.

The leaders have split before the sprint point. Six lead now:
Boom, Chavanel, Van Garderen, Voigt, Riblon, and Moser.

*Now the leaders start the first climb of Alpe d’Huez. The HC climb is 12.3k at 8.4%. It is steepest near the bottom, tops out at 1765m (not the summit, but they will finish on the summit.), and is immediately followed by the cat-2 climb of the Col de Sarenne.

The nine riders from the break regroup early on the climb.
The 2 Saxo chasers are 6:13 behind the leaders, and 1:20 ahead of the peloton as they start the climb.

As the peloton approach the INT, André Greipel outsprints Peter Sagan for 12th on the line.

Km 108: INT - Bourg d’Oisans:
1.    Boom  2. Chavanel  3. Riblon  4. Moser  5. Van Garderen  6. Danielson  7. Voigt  8. Amador  9. Jeannesson  10. Paulinho 11. Roche  12. Greipel  13. Sagan  14. Sabatini 15. Bodnar

Sergio Paulinho keeps pushing up the mountain, as his teammate, Roche drops off.
*Up front, Tejay Van Garderen is out of the saddle putting some work in. Only Riblon stays on the American’s wheel.

Team Sky control the front of the peloton for their leader, Froome.
Many riders are being dropped out the back on the big climb.
TVG drops Riblon now.

-58.5k: The peloton reels in Nicolas Roche.
Profile of the first Alpe d'Huez ascent and the Col de Sarenne
Van Garderen leads on the road. The erstwhile break group is scattered all over the mountain behind him. The peloton is 7:45 behind the BMC rider.

We are seeing some beautiful aerial shots of the gnarly switchbacks of Huez.
6.5k from the summit: Riblon is chasing :15 behind the leader, TVG.
Further back, Paulinho is being caught by the peloton.

Dan Martin is struggling on the climb, and falling off the back.
The crowds along the road are getting thick and loud, as Van Garderen approaches 5k to go to the summit.

Valverde is hanging on to the back of the peloton. Not sure if he is suffering though.

Too many over-emphatic fans do not get out of the way when the riders come through. That is half the battle on this all-too popular mountain. Many are decked out in wild costumes that color the curving road like a psychedelic spectrum.

So far, it is still dry on Alpe d’Huez. Some clouds in the sky, though.

TVG is plowing through the masses of fans with barely any road visible ahead. He carves his way through Dutch Corner, where all the orange-clad fans wait to cheer on their home heroes. Bauke Mollema and Laurens Ten Dam of Team Belkin will get a very hearty reception when they pass by.

*Riblon trails TVG by :23.
The peloton is back at +8:10.

-53k for the leader, Van Garderen.
*Thomas Voeckler (EUC) attacks out of the peloton. He is followed by Didier (RSL) and—I think that is Wout Poels for Vacansoleil. Poels, once a legitimate white jersey contender, has been quiet so far this Tour.
Pierre Rolland comes up to join his teammate Voeckler in the move.

Moreno Moser (CAN) comes up on the first chaser, Riblon. They are closing in on TVG up front.

-52k: Nieve accelerates off the front of the bunch for Euskaltel.
Schleck pulls over, to pull some dirt out of his chain possibly. Dunno.

-51.2k: Talansky attacks for Garmin. Siutsou drops off the front for Sky. Froome still has 3 teammates with him.

The KOM point for this first summit of Alpe d’Huez comes with 50k left to ride in the stage.
TVG is approaching the summit.
Talansky is reeled in.

*500 meters from the summit, Moser and Riblon catch up to Van Garderen.
*Now Andy Schleck attacks the peloton.
Valverde is still in the peloton. He does not seem to be suffering after all.

*At the KOM, Moser pushes ahead to take maximum points ahead of Riblon and TVG.
Voeckler, Rolland, Poels and Nieve are chasing almost 4k further down the climb.

-49k: Schleck catches up to the Nieve/Rolland chasing group. Just then, Voeckler cracks.
Schleck, Rolland, Nieve and Poels are next over the summit.

Km 122.5 KOM 4 HC Alpe d’Huez (12.3k at 8.4%):
1.    Moser  2. Riblon  3. Van Garderen  4. Voigt  5. Danielson  6. Jeannesson  7. Boom  8. Amador  9. Chavanel  10. Nieve

*Moser, Riblon, and Van Garderen are the leaders on the road.
The peloton catch Voeckler, and hit the Huez KOM 8:15 behind the leaders.

Onto the Col de Sarenne, the road narrows and the smooth asphalt turns to an older, rougher surface—and the crowds are gone. This area is a protected natural environment.
Overhead the clouds are thick and dark now. But the road is still dry. That should make the riders happy.

*-42k: Riblon and TVG drop Moser on the narrow climb.
Moser becomes chase 1.
Further back, Voigt is chase 2.
Tom D is chase 3.
Chase 4 includes Amador, Jeannesson, Boom, and Chavanel.
Schleck, Rolland, Poels and Nieve are the next chasers behind.
The yellow jersey peloton is back behind all of them.

Ryder Hesjedal attacks the peloton now. The pack is about 40 riders strong.

*Van Garderen leads Riblon over the Sarenne summit at 1999 meters of elevation, under thick clouds. They will hope the rain holds off during the tricky descent.

Km 131.5 KOM 5 cat-2 Col de Sarenne (3k at 7.8%):
1.    Van Garderen  2. Riblon  3. Voigt  4. Moser

Movistar take over the front of the peloton chase. Cunego is dumped out the back.
Froome is down to two teammates, as Lopez drops off.

Riblon leads Van Garderen down the vertiginous descent.

*TVG’s gears lock up as he navigates the steep sharp bends of the Sarenne descent! He is unable to pedal. All race vehicles have been told to clear out during this descent because of the dangerous conditions. Will he be able to fix this issue and still maintain his front position? This is possibly the worst place on the entire course to have a mechanical issue (except for maybe 3001 meters from the finish line).

Riblon leads alone, soaring downhill.

Moser is able to pass TVG as the American waits for help from a neutral car.
*Laurens Ten Dam (in 7th place overall) has been distanced by the yellow jersey group on the climb.

The leaders are 5k into the descent when the Nieve group goes over the summit of the Col de Sarenne far behind them.

*Moser has caught up to Riblon in the lead.
*Riblon overshoots a corner and rides off the road into the woods. He is composed and stays upright, before resuming the descent.
*Moser now leads alone.

William Bonnet has abandoned the race.

Pierre Rolland is taking the descent very carefully.
Van Garderen has reappeared. He looks like he has gotten a new bike.

33k to go for Moser.
*Saxo’s Contador and Kreuziger attack on the fast descent! They fly past Froome and Porte on a short straightaway.
Froome and his Sky teammates chase, but a small gap forms.

*The squeal of brakes rings out on a hairpin, as raindrops are now falling on the road. We will see how many risks Contador and Froome are willing to take now.

*-25.1k: Riblon catches back up with Moser in the lead, as they near the bottom of the descent.

The yellow jersey group is 7:35 behind the 2 leaders.
The leaders have 10k to go before they start the final climb to the finish.

Contador and Kreuziger have :20 on Froome.
TVG has closed all but :45 of his gap to Moser and Riblon.
The Saxo duo pass Amador;

*Contador and Kreuziger have been caught, and Contador has dropped back. He is now working to catch back up to the peloton. It happened during the commercial break, so I don’t know why Contador was so far back all of a sudden.

*-17k: Van Garderen has caught up with the 2 leaders.
The three leaders have a gap of 7:21 over the yellow jersey group.

-14k: The 3 leaders approach the base of the final HC climb to the finish on top of Alpe d’Huez.

The final ascent of Alpe d'Huez
*Riblon accelerates right at the base of the climb. Van Garderen stays with the Frenchman. Moser is instantly distanced by the other two.

TVG and Riblon are the first to pass Didi the Devil on the early part of the climb. The most recognizable fan in all of cycling is dressed in yellow this year, to celebrate the 100th edition of the Tour De France.

Movistar have taken the reins at the front of the peloton.

*News now that Contador had changed bikes coming in to La Ferriere. That’s why he had to catch back up. It was probably a planned maneuver, and could be part of the reason he tried to get to the bottom of the descent with a small gap over Froome. It is in fact the Spaniard’s second bike change today.

Nieve, Chavanel and Schleck are picked up by the yellow jersey peloton.
Movistar is driving hard at the front of the pack. Light rain is still dotting the road.

Moser is just 50 meters behind the 2 leaders, trying to hang on.
I am not sure the leaders will be caught today. They  have a nice lead, and both Van Garderen and Riblon look highly motivated.

Big Jens Voigt pulls up on Moser.
Ahead, Van Garderen is charging up the mountain. Riblon looks unsure if he wants to keep responding to TVG’s accelerations, or keep his own rhythm.

*-12k: Van Garderen drops Riblon, and leads alone now.
What a great comeback from the mechanical on the last mountain descent. The young American looks absolutely determined.

Back in the yellow jersey group, Kennaugh drops off, leaving just Richie Porte to lead Chris Froome up the rest of the climb. They now trail TVG by 4:35.

Valverde attacks.
Serpa follows.
Anton is with them.

Fans in all kinds of costumes are running alongside Van Garderen, who probably can’t wait till it’s over.

*Froome accelerates from back in the yellow jersey group.
J-Rod chases first, then Quintana and Contador.
They catch Serpa, Valverde and Anton, who were just ahead.

The fans crowd Huez
The yellow jersey group now is only about 10 riders strong.
The yellow jersey group: With Froome and Porte are J-Rod, Moreno, Quintana, Valverde, Contador, Kreuziger, Anton, and Serpa.

-10k: TVG is still pedaling a rhythm, but it is slowing, and his lead is shrinking. 4:20 to the yellow jersey now.
Behind Riblon, Moser is catching back up to Voigt.

*Froome pulls away from the YJG again.
Only Quintana gets right on his wheel.

Froome and Quintana pass Danielson.
9k to go for Tejay Van Garderen.
Froome and Quintana pass Jeannesson.

Now J-Rod and Moreno push ahead for Katusha.
*J-Rod bridges up to Quintana and Froome, as they pass a few fading escapees.

8k to go for Tejay Van Garderen. The yellow jersey is 4:20 back.

*Purito and Quintana are attacking Froome.
Purito gets a gap in front, followed by Quintana. Froome, isolated now, is a few yards behind Quintana.

Contador is gone.

7k to go for TVG.
Purito has just a few seconds on Quintana, who has just a few seconds on Froome.

-6.6k: Now Tejay has to shove away an overly enthusiastic fan.
*Riblon is closing the gap to Tejay now. The Frenchman is about :40 behind the leader.

6k to go for TVG.
TVG leads Riblon by :40.
The next chaser is Moser.
Voigt must have dropped off.

Further back, Quintana has pulled Purito back, and Froome is with them again.. Richie Porte is with them again, leading the quartet up the climb, chasing the leader now by 3:45.

5k to go for TVG: The Saxo duo of Contador and Kreuziger pass a fading Jens Voigt.
Right behind Contador are Nieve, Serpa and Fuglsang.

4.2k to go for TVG. Behind, Froome throws his right arm up. He may have a mechanical issue or a flat. Richie Porte has the flat? Froome seems to be calling for his team car. Porte slows, and J-Rod and Quintana maintain pace, riding on ahead.

Porte gave Froome a water bottle. That will earn a fine.

4k to go: Quintana accelerates.
J-Rod follows momentarily, then is gapped just behind the Colombian climber.
Quintana attacks hard now.

3k to go for Van Garderen. Riblon is chasing :24 back;
further back, J-Rod is on Quintana’s wheel.

*Riblon is really closing in on Van Garderen. The American grits his teeth as he continues to push as hard as he can.

*2k to go: Riblon catches and passes TVG!
In a blink Riblon has gone away up the road.

2:30 behind Riblon, Quintana and Rodriguez are trying to put more time into the yellow jersey.

Fuglsang and Nieve are seen further back, somewhere in the mix.

Riblon passes under the flamme rouge with a sizable lead over Van Garderen.

*Christophe Riblon zips up, kisses the medal on his necklace and is ecstatic to win the stage.

Fuglsang, Contador and Nieve finished together
France has finally got something to celebrate in their home race. Riblon wins on the prestigious Alpe d’Huez after a historic double climb. This will be a favorite on his list of palmares.

Tejay Van Garderen rolls in :59 later to take second on the stage.
Moreno Moser is third at +1:27.
The top three finishers all came from the early breakaway.

Paul Sherwen suggests that the mechanical issue that Tejay had on the road might have been the difference that cost him the stage win. I have to agree.

The GC riders will trickle in now. All that remains to be seen is the time splits between the contenders. Chris Froome, of course holds his lead in the Tour De France. Read on for the full results of stage 18.

175 riders finished today on Alpe d’Huez.

Plenty more climbing tomorrow!
My stage 19 preview will be posted soon.
