197k from
Saint-Gildas-des-Bois to Saint-Malo
Weather: 25 c (78 f); sunny;
winds: 14mph, windier at the finish; (10th sunny day in a row); I
heard more sun and heat are expected this week.
The picturesque finish town of Saint-Malo |
182 riders took the start
today.
Dmitry Muravyev of Astana
has not abandoned the race, as was reported yesterday.
Ryder Hesjedal was the man
responsible for Peter Kennaugh’s scary crash on the Col de Portet-d’Aspet on
stage 9. Hesjedal apparently tweeted an apology to Kennaugh.
This is a day for the GC
contenders to take a break and recover further from the mountain efforts. It is
the sprinters day to animate the race.
The peloton are on the road
now.
The early break of 5
consists of: Oroz (EUS), Simon (SOJ), Mate (COF), Westra
(VCD), Cousin (EUC); they escaped at
the start.
Their lead was up to 5:40 at
one point;
-145k (90 miles to go): The
5 leaders have a gap of 4:29 to the chasing peloton.
-125k: the lead is 3:58;
The stage 10 route, north through Brittany |
Everything is predictably
routine as the peloton cruise along the flat roads of Brittany. The top
sprinters are all in the peloton. They have a chance at chasing down the break
before they reach the intermediate sprint point that comes with about 70k to
go. But they probably won’t spend
too much energy toward that end. With only five riders in the break, there will
still be ten spots available to score points at the INT.
The sprinters teams have
upped the pace a little, and are gradually eating into the lead. They don’t
need to catch the break before the INT; the green jersey contenders could be
satisfied to sprint for 6th.
The key is just to get more points at the sprint lines than their close
competitors, of course, and then duel it out at the finish.
-100k: the lead is back up
to 4:07;
The lead has been hovering
around the 4:00 mark most of the first 100k.
-94k: the leaders go through
the feed zone holding a lead of 3:53;
Looks like they are riding
into some headwinds. A tailwind is expected at the finish.
-80k: (about 50 miles to go)
the lead is down to 3:25.
-70k: the leaders approach
the intermediate sprint point with a lead of 3:22;
Mate opens up the sprint
first. Westra chases; Mate takes it at the line, then Westra, and the other 3
coast across just after.
Cannondale put five men
ahead of Sagan at the front of the peloton. Cavendish, Greipel and Rojas are
just behind them.
The Cannondale train is
still leading Sagan out, Cavendish is glued to Sagan’s rear wheel as he weaves
across the road, when André Greipel comes around on the left and beats Sagan to
the line.
Km 127.5: INT Lehinglé:
1.
Mate 2. Westra 3. Simon 4.
Cousin 5. Oroz 6. Greipel 7. Sagan 8.
Cavendish 9. Flecha 10. Rojas 11. Sabatini
12. Bodnar 13. De Gendt 14. Chavanel 15. Stannard
Descriptions of the point allocations and jersey
classifications are in my Tour de France race preview which can be found under
“Pages” and “Archive” on the right.
-60k: The five leaders have
a lead of 2:19 now.
5k to the only categorized
climb of the day. It is a 1k long cat-4 averaging around 4%.
Westra attacks first on the
climb. One mountain point is available up top.
Km142: KOM 1 Cote de Dinan (1k at 4.2%):
1.
Westra
Westra does not wait for the
other 4 leaders at the top of the hill. He keeps going. Mate gives Cousin an
animated explanation, possibly urging him to do more work on the pursuit.
Within another km or two, Westra is brought back by the other four. All 5 are
working together again
50k to go: Oroz (EUS), Simon (SOJ), Mate
(COF), Westra (VCD), and Cousin (EUC) lead by around 2:30.
The route has passed several
beautiful chateaus today. The crowds have come out in droves lining the roads
of each town the peloton passes through.
40k to go: the lead is still
2:30; I’m guessing the peloton will wait till around 10 or 15k to go before
they catch the leaders.
30k to go the lead is at
1:10 and falling fast now. The crosswind has picked up, and is very strong now.
-28k: Oroz attacks the lead
group on a short descent.
Oroz is pulled back within
1k.
-22k: a couple riders make
contact and crash as the peloton goes through a roundabout. Flecha (VCD) and a
Cofidis rider collided, others are delayed.
20k to go: the peloton have
pulled to within :30.
*Westra gives up and drops
back from the lead group.
The other four continue to
try and keep the peloton behind them.
-18.7k: Westra is picked up
by the peloton. They will let the leaders dangle out front as long as possible,
and then the sprinters’ teams will gobble them up on the way to the finish.
-16k: Talansky (GRS) and
Tuft (OGE) crash.
-15k: the gap is down to
:15.
10k to go: the lead is :06.
The four leaders are bravely
continuing to fight, but the catch is inevitable now.
With 7k to go the leaders
are holding an :08 advantage.
Mate puts in a last
desperate dig at 5.8k to go, but within a couple hundred meters the peloton
make contact with the lead group as they round the corners into Saint-Malo.
-5.5k: Simon tries an
acceleration off the front. The others sit up and accept the catch.
*Simon is caught before the
5k to go banner. Gruppo compatto.
The sprinters’ teams are
organizing at the front. Omega, Lotto, and Orica are riding a very high pace as
guys start being shed out the back;
3k to go: the peloton
navigate a tricky right hand bend and split around a median;
the Orica train got
disrupted on the turn;
Splits in the peloton are
resulting from the high speed. There could be time gaps at the finish that
could affect the GC.
Argos Shimano push up to the
front inside 2k to go:
Lotto seem to be controlling
things the best;
Inside the final kilometer
Greg Henderson (LTB) is setting up Greipel with a powerful lead-out;
There is a tight right hand
turn with a few hundred meters to go. Gert Steegmans (OPQ) takes the lead
trying to set up Cavendish;
Cav is a few bikes back,
sitting on Kittel’s wheel;
Steegmans pulls off, and
Henderson and Greipel are out front again. Right behind them are Kittel’s last
lead-out man, Tom Veelers, then Cavendish and Kittel;
Greipel comes around
Henderson on the left and starts his sprint.
Behind him Kittel and Cav
fight for Greipel’s wheel; Cav tries to get on Greipel’s wheel, but Veelers
lets up and swerves slightly into Cav’s lane. The Manxman defends his line and
bumps shoulders with Veelers, sending him crashing to the ground in front of
the rest of the charging peloton;
Somehow, everyone avoids
hitting the downed rider.
Ahead, Greipel is on full
throttle, as he glides over to the right, Kittel comes up on his left, Cav
right on Kittel’s wheel, Sagan a bike length back;
Kittel comes around Greipel
and beats him to the line!
Greipel is second by a hair,
Cav is third, Sagan fourth.
There is going to be a
debate about culpability in that crash. Very often, sprinters’ lead-out men
“accidentally” alter their lines to block the sprinters coming up behind them.
Of course this is illegal, but if it’s subtle and smooth enough, they often get
away with it. By the time Cav hit Veelers, Cav had established a line behind
him that Veelers swerved into. Cav just aggressively defended his line, I
believe rightly so. We will see how the judges saw it…
Marcel Kittel won the first
sprint of the race, and now becomes the first sprinter to log a second stage
win in this Tour. It may, however have come at the cost of one of the cogs in
his lead-out train, the fast Tom Veelers. That would handicap him for further
sprints.
The moment Cavendish and Veelers made contact |
Down goes Veelers |
As far as the GC contenders
are concerned, the splits were not too bad for the most part. The top ten
remain unchanged.
The following riders
finished :11 behind the winner: Evans, Froome, Valverde, Contador, Poels,
Kwiatkowski, Kreuziger, Fuglsang, Nieve and Peraud.
Giving up five seconds to
that group were: Mollema, Ten Dam, Dan Martin, J-Rod, Quintana, Rui Costa, Bardet,
Monfort, Anton, Navarro, Serpa and Schleck.
Coming in at +1:40 to the
winners, and +1:34 on the first GC group were: Dan Moreno, Talansky, Hesjedal,
Pinot and Porte.

Uninviting Cav to Boxmeer seems a bit extreme, no? I agree with you about the fact that he already had established his line before contact was made. Now my only question is-is it even humanly possible for him to gain enough points to wear that green jersey? why doesn't he snag more of the int points-aside from the obvious answer of conserving energy?
ReplyDeleteFor the most part, Cavendish has been going for the intermediate sprint points, though Greipel seems to be dominating those sprints. Of course, escape groups have gobbled up a lot of those points, too.
DeleteYou can see what happened on a stage like 13, where Kittel got caught out and did not score any points, while the others pulled away from him. So, yes, I think it is possible for Sagan to be caught.
First, he could have a bad day like Kittel just did, and lose his big lead.
And second, as you well know, ANYTHING can happen at any time.
A fan could stick his fancy new camera into the road and take out ten riders, rain could cause a crash, the whole team could get chicken pox, Floyd Landis could get into a solo break and reclaim sixteen lost minutes...
